Burger King Ad Inappropriate for Kids?
The ad is actually pushing a new Sponge Bob kid's meal, but some parents aren't buying it. "It was funny at first, but it is a little graphic for kids," says Kassandra Jackson, a mom in Boise, Idaho.
I've watched it several times now and the only thing I can find to complain about is the fact that the King is rapping about squares when the shapes are actually rectangles. Other than that, I think I am too confused to be offended.
Dangerous Toys
The New Easy Bake Oven
New, and unfortunately not-so-improved, the oven caused 77 burns, 16 of them second or third-degree, and one that resulted in a partial finger amputation.
CPSC
Aquadots
When you add water to these little plastic balls, the coating produces effects similar to GHB -- the date rape drug. Pleasant. Thankfully they were recalled.

Lead paint
Speaking of things you shouldn't put in your mouth, how about any toy from China? Hundreds have been recalled thanks to the high levels of lead in the paint used to coat these toys

Magnetic toys
Particularly magnets that are small enough to swallow. When positive and negative magnets are floating around your digestive tract, they're drawn to one another, which can do some serious, life-threatening damage.

Snack time Cabbage Patch
This little doll was so hungry, it had a habit of chewing little kids' fingers, hair, and whatever else was unfortunate enough to get stuck in its mouth. It was quickly recalled.

Mini-hammock
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission: "the mini-hammock can twist around a child's neck as he/she is getting into or out of the mini-hammock, resulting in strangulation and death." All 3 million were recalled.

Lawn Darts
These have been banned for years in the US, as they had a tendency to wind up stuck in kids, not the ground.

Johnny Reb Cannon
This bad boy fired plastic cannon balls up to 35 feet. Even a pellet gun would be less dangerous -- at least you can aim a gun.

Good thing this atomic energy set only came with "very low-level" radioactive sources, because that's not dangerous. Oh wait -- yes, yes it is.

Water Yo-Yo Balls
Speaking of getting strangled to death, these yo-yo balls came under scrutiny after the stringy cord got wrapped around children's necks. They've been banned in Illinois, but have yet to be recalled by the CPSC.

Jacki said...Wow- Amazing how marketing can be aimed at both the parents and children simultaneously. Hey parents remember I like big butts? Hey kids ya like Sponge Bob eh? What a weird combination. First time I saw it, I did laugh, but it was a WTF laugh. Bottom line- whether the girls in spandex are shakin' their rounded booties, or "square" ones- it's girls in spandex shaking their booties... Is this ever appropriate for kids? And BTW- pirate booty and girl booty- are 2 different things. BTW again- Sponge Bob- is a WEIRD show. Not intelligent, no lessons, not appropriate for kids under 10 if you ask me. It can be violent, and just weird. No wonder kids are f-ed up- shooting each other and doing each other by 11. Not necessarily all Sponge Bobs fault, but you get it. I think Burger Kings commercial people are on drugs. Trying to stick with the off the wall themes. Appealing to the 20 something Adult Swim lovers and their weird rugrats. Well they nailed it I guess.

If I were a child (mercifully I've been spared the burden of being a child in 2009), I would be frightened by these creatures--who the heck invents this stuff? Does it actually sell?

charlie said...ok, so you are blameing sponge bob for society's problems, "No wonder kids are f-ed up- shooting each other and doing each other by 11". you do say it isnt all sponge bobs fault "but you get it". well actually i dont get it. i dont get how people can always pass the blame off on to someone or something else for the actions that they took. its not sponge bobs fault, its not marilyn mansons fault, its not grand theft autos fault, its the parents fault who are not in their kids lives. maybe if parents played a bigger part in their kids lives and stopped letting the tv, music or video games control their kids lives. i never shot, stabbed, robbed, killed, "did someone" because of the commercial or tv show i just watched. AND the fact that you want to even mention that sponge bob is part of the reason why people are messed up in the head is insane to me. stop tryin to pass the blame for your piss poor parenting style.

Jacki said...Hey Charlie? First of all I don't have kid's...
I observe the behavior of other peoples children. Secondly- I think a cartoon that makes no sense first off, has no educational value, and has violence is not appropriate for children under 10. I said that before, and yes- blame those "piss poor" parents for setting their kids down to be babysat by a mindless show. But- to have a commercial with women shakin their asses aimed at children- this probably would WARP A CHILD'S FRAGILE MIND IN SOME WAY. Just like when a cartoon characters brain falls out his nose, or his eyeballs dry up in the sockets and catch fire, or when he is flattened by a car. All of which I have seen on Spongebob. Too much of that kind of nonsense is bound to feck with your mind. At any age. So take it easy, tiger.

It is not up to Television or music or Video to raise our kids it is up to the parents to raise them! Television isn't reality and either are the commercials that are aired on the TV!
I dont know to many kids that are doing each other by 11, maybe you should keep an eye on your kids and not worry so much about what a Burger King ad is selling, dont forget if you dont like whats on you do have the power to turn it off!

It goes almost without saying that if you are ever in a situation that feels creepy you should react first, rationalize later -- even if there is ultimately no solid rationale beyond merely the intuition itself.
After all, we intuitively know right from wrong.
This is wrong.

Mommy21858 said...You know I think sometimes people just need to get a life. How many of the parents who think that this ad is inappropriate let their kids watch Sponge Bob and purchase the Kids meal for them. Come on if you are going to complain about it then do something about it, Monitor the television your kids watch and don't contribute to childhood obesity by purchasing them the full of fat fast food. Spend some real time with them flying kites, building snowmen, belly button botany, or fingerpainting with pudding. That will mean more the them then the food, toy and television program

Bobby G said...Here is another example of the dumbing down of America since the proliferation of rap culture. The sad thing is the people who created this ad probably don't even realize how stupid it is. It's the current generation Y and the X enablers that are creating this garbage. These days there are lots of ads like this that make you wonder why the companies sign off on this when it doesn't say anthing about anything related to their product. How do they do that? Why? How stupid do they think we have become? I'm afraid they think most of America are as stupid as their ads. Sad fact; it's true.

I dont think anyone out there really got the Ad maybe not even the person who came up with it. No wonder why Mc D is as large as it is.

Mike said...Hey, I consider myself an fairly open minded person.....but I saw this spot for the first time last night and I was "WTF?? This is a BK ad for a Sponge Bob kid's meal?? Are you flippin' kidding me?"
I thought it was ridiculous, over the top, and inappropriate. What made it completely distasteful to me was the tie-in to Sponge Bob and kids.
If this were just a late night ad targeted at adults, it would have been just another foolish "King" spot, but BK has really dropped to a new low with this one.
I'm really disappointed in them.
