Puppy Saves Toddler's Life
That's what happened to 2-year-old Nathaniel Teafatiller; he and his 4-month-old puppy, Stanley, slipped out of the family's rural Washington state home and wandered off into the woods. Nathaniel's dad woke up from a nap and found the front door open and his son and the dog missing.

Fortunately, none of those things happened. Searchers using heat-seeking devices found Nathaniel and Stanley huddled together some six hours after they first went missing. The boy, who was wearing only a shirt and pair of socks, was wet and scratched up but otherwise unharmed.
"A two-year-old in that area is dangerous... you've got cougars, coyotes, dogs that can pull a child down like that, which has happened before," said Lewis County Sheriff Steve Mansfield. The sheriff added that in this particular area, southeast of Chehalis, Wash., there are other dangers, like drowning in a creek or tumbling down a cliff.
It appears that Stanley was crucial to the rescue in two ways: He kept little Nathaniel warm in the cold temperatures, and his body heat was what attracted the search team's attention. Either way, this puppy is a hero. Mom Ashley Teafatiller agrees: "It's the most amazing thing I've ever seen."

Katt said...My 2 year nephew slipped out of the back door while mom was doing laundry. We didn't realized he'd learned how to flip the deadbolt. Luckily we found him in the neighbor's yard, he wanted to visit her dog. We then put those latches way up on the door where he couldn't reach them. It was pain for the rest of us to unlatch them all the time, but at least it kept him safe. My brother also then got him his own dog. They were best buds for 15 years!!
Dogs are amazing creatures...so are 2 year olds!!

Joey said...Ann, with all due respect, you sound as stupid as a father who would take a nap while he's supposed to be watching his two year old! Are you seriously blaming a dog for not stoping a child from escaping? Do you know how ridiculous that sounds?
Apparently you know nothing about kids or puppies. For either one of them to have the attention span at that age to "stick together," for that period of time is pretty amazing.

They mess up, but this little boys puppy stayed with him, warmed him, and possibly protected him from further injuries simply by his presence. So nice to hear stories like this. I want a puppy!!!!!!!!

You need a deadbolt. Where was the mother? Did she call the police as soon as he was missing? The mother has the job of raising her child. Having a boy is no excuse for not watching over your child or seeing that someone else does. It doesn't tell the time when the boy first left the house so we are guessing that it was in the afternoon because he (the father) called it a nap. He (the son) was missing for six hours, that probably puts him out in the woods at night. His guardian angel was looking out for him. So was God. It is a good story with a happy ending.

Then I see this story and think .......... ah how sweet. I read the story and its really cute. Unfortunately, I scroll down and see these ridiculous comments some fools on here make. Just can't imagine that some puppy actually helped save this child's life? DID YOU EVEN READ THE STORY?? Stupid, @$$anine idiots.

This includes the guy that thought his two year old couldn't reach the door handle, the kid that took off, AND the morons who need to pick things apart to boost their own lacking egos. Unfortunatly, the puppy is technically a stupid animal, but not for this instance, because it's a PUPPY. Not even grown yet, still stayed by the side of it's person. These things are what makes me respect animals more than humans at times.

Jessica said...Wow! Angry are we? This is such a good story! Yes the parents didn't realize- but did you expect the 4 month old puppy to be like Lassie, and like others said, wake up the dad, bark that the little boy was leaving, or call 911? The fact is is that the pup stayed with the boy. Puppies usually are wild and take off. For him to go with him is a miracle, because they found them, alive and fine!
Can we look at this story as positive instead of negative? We hear about children being found in the woods in all of the time, but not alive! We never hear about the good stories. I think you need to re-think this.

JRMT said...Lots of free advise & comments. Why don't all who think CPS should get involved, get together & write a book on "The Do's & Don'ts of Raising Children". Since the majority or us have absolutely no clue how to do this properly. I would suggest that you take 1 day out & follow a 2 year old around step by step. Multiply that by 1000 then you would have an inkling of knowledge.

The puppy is a hero he is 4 mths old he's probably so small that he couldnt block a two yr old from getting out the door. I agree with everyone else on here they may not have found this child alive if it wasnt for the dog. So do the world a favor keep your idiotic comments to yourself.

Alicia said...Ann, what is your problem? Perhaps you've forgotten that no one is perfect. Sure, the dad fell asleep, but any parent can attest that they've tried to catch a few z's during their child's nap and and ended up waking after the kid. That doesn't make him lazy or irresponsible...just normal.
Furthermore, I am not sure what you would call the puppy except a hero. Anyone who's raised a dog will be able to tell you that at four months a puppy is still a puppy and much more likely to wander away and find an adventure of its own rather than stay with a two year old. It's very remarkable that he stayed with the boy, and since it was the pup's body heat which led searchers to them, I would have to agree that he was indeed a hero.
I can only assume that you have no children, dogs, or the ability to appreciate a happy ending. Other than the dangers listed in the article, this little boy could've met with an end much like that of Caylee Anthony or the little girl found in a suitcase in L.A. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt you to appreciate a (potentially) dangerous situation being turned into a happy ending via the family dog.

Dee said...Just another note, I'm sure most of you noticed that there were OTHER DANGERS out there. How do we know that the HERO PUPPY didn't stand between him and a creek, or push him back to keep him from falling off a cliff or maybe even led him around the path of a dangerous animal. The point is...They are BOTH BABIES Ann and you can spit your bitterness at another story...This is a great story and the PUPPY IS A HERO!!!!!
