iPhone "Baby Shaker" App Pulled - What Was Apple Thinking?
The description of the now-unavailable app read, "On a plane, on the bus, in a theatre. Babies are everywhere you don't want them to be! They're always distracting you from preparing for that big presentation at work with their incessant crying. Before Baby Shaker there was nothing you could do about it."
And of course, the description included a disclaimer: "Never, never shake a baby."
As you might imagine, there was quite an uproar over this app, primarily from parents. Patrick Donohue, founder of the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation, an organization that helps parents and medical professionals deal with Pediatric Acquired Brain Injuries such those as caused by Shaken Baby Syndrome, wrote directly to Apple CEO Steve Jobs to express his dismay: "As the father of a 3-year-old who was shaken by her baby nurse when she was only 5 days old, breaking 3 ribs, both collarbones and causing a severe brain injury, words cannot describe my reaction." Marilyn Bar, the founder of the US Center for Shaken Baby Syndrome, goes even further: "Not only are they making fun of shaken baby syndrome, but they are actually encouraging it. This is absolutely terrible."
How Safe is Dairy
Does milk really do a body good? Are the hormones safe? Does yogurt help with weight loss, and does kefir promote better digestion? It can be maddening trying to muddle through all the conflicting information out there. We have the down low on which dairy products your family should be eating, drinking and slurping.
jupiterimages
Milk: It's one of the best sources of calcium, needed for building strong bones and teeth and safe weight loss, according to one recent study. Plus, milk is full of protein, fortified with vitamin D and protects against colon cancer. So what's the problem? Well, lactose intolerance for many, probable increased risk of prostate cancer and possible increased risk of ovarian cancer. That's the hormones, found in standard and organic milk (thanks to dairy cows being kept pregnant so that they'll lactate). And that weight-loss study? Funded by the National Dairy Council.

Verdict: There's currently no good scientific evidence that says that drinking more than one glass of milk per day is necessary, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. Given some of the risk factors associated with consuming too much dairy, best to look to non-dairy sources for your daily requirement of calcium (1,000 to 1,200 milligrams). Go for leafy greens, beans and whole grains -- all of which offer countless other health benefits, too.

Cheese: Cheese is the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of the dairy world. On the one hand, we can appreciate delicate shavings of parmesan enhancing the flavor of a salad, or a slice of Bucheron complementing a glass of wine. On the other, we see a slop of melted cheddar oozing over nachos, a roadside stop on the path to obesity or clogged arteries.
Getty Images
Verdict: Think moderation. Most cheese is high in sodium and isn't exactly low-calorie. But the combination of fat and protein in cheese is very satisfying, and it can keep your appetite in check for hours after eating. The endless variety of cheeses can accommodate most tastes and diets: Feta is low in saturated fats, firm ricotta is low in sodium and Swiss offers a real protein punch. Plus, cheese happens to be great for your teeth -- in addition to providing calcium, it changes the pH in your mouth to discourage bacteria.

Yogurt: Yogurt offers all the benefits of milk, and then some. It's more easily digested than milk and contains friendly bacteria that's good for your intestinal tract. Some studies even show it to boost immunity and fight cancerous tumors. Unfortunately, most of the yogurt you see on supermarket shelves is so highly sweetened that most of the calories in the product come from the sugar, not the yogurt itself.
jupiterimages
Verdict: Buy plain yogurt. It is more nutritious in every way and it's easily sweetened with fruit, maple syrup or agave nectar. Or, don't sweeten it and use it in place of sour cream, milk or mayonnaise when making pancakes, muffins or tuna salad. Also, avoid any yogurt at the store called "lite," as it likely contains artificial sweeteners and colors.
jupiterimages
Kefir: Kefir, which is just now more widely available, is a cultured, enzyme-rich food that contains even more beneficial bacteria than yogurt, as well as healthy yeasts. It also contains the essential amino acid tryptophan, which has a calming effect on the nerves.
jupiterimages
Verdict: Ta-da! Kefir is he healthiest of all the dairy products. But, as with yogurt, it's best to avoid the overly sweetened commercial varieties. Choose plain kefir, or, better yet, you can purchase a starter culture and easily make your own using whatever milk you normally buy.

Apple has removed the program from their iPhone app store and the developer, Sikalosoft, no longer lists it on their website.
We've all experienced the frustration that comes with a baby that won't stop crying. I spent the first three months of my oldest son's life trudging up and down the stairs all night long because that was the only thing that would stop him from crying. And it can be even worse when it's someone else's baby disturbing your meal or interrupting your movie. But, of course, physical abuse is never an option for dealing with an unhappy or inconsolable child. And yet, the developer of this application seems to find this kind of behavior amusing.
I'm sure someone, somewhere, thought, at some point, that this was funny, but someone at Apple, which has been criticized for being too particular about the apps they do approve, certainly made a mistake in approving this one.

LS said...It's just a video game. What's the big deal? The people who have this app on their phone KNOW that it's just for fun, they KNOW it's not a real person, they KNOW the difference between reality and fantasy.
Oh, wait....
Sorry.
That was the argument for not letting kids play the Grand Theft Auto series.
COMPLETELY different situation.
THAT was about hurting and possibly killing people for fun.
This isn't..... oh, wait.
I've said it before... our society is completely schizophrenic.
This app was a terrible idea. GTA was a terrible idea. Interesting that one gets massive backlash and is immediately pulled from the market, and the other gets massive backing and makes billions for it's manufacturer.

Suzanne said...LS, sorry John and Paula misunderstood your post. Everything you said was right on target. Additionally, I will never purchase an Apple product now. Total idiots to market the product--not only because it promotes shaking a baby (by making it a joke/downplaying the act)...but also it validates the irritating, pretentious attitudes of some people who do not have kids who think children are annoying.

KRIS said...PEOPLE, THIS IS A GAME ABOUT HOW TO SHAKE A BABY TO DEATH WHEN THEY DON'T QUIT CRYING!! My gosh, have some common sense. Haven't you heard of the Columbine shootings, and all these KIDS KILLING, THROWING OR STOMPING ON , babies? Women and men KILLING THEIR OWN BABIES AND CHILDREN??
We can thank "wrestling for that as well!" I don't agree with ANY video game that shows violence, and blood, there's too many of them to name, as well as television shows and cartoons,WE AS ADULTS SEE IT, PURCHASE IT, OUR KIDS WATCH US, AND ALL IT EQUALS IS MORE UNNEEDED VIOLENCE FOR AMERICA! We, as well as our kids learn it everywhere, and it's time for we as parents/ADULTS, to take the reins and DON"T buy the games, and SHUT OFF the television and cell phones!! Use passwords and parental controls on the computers, and KNOW FOR A FACT what your kids are doing online! NO, it's not a total cure, but these are OUR KIDS, OUR RESPONSIBILITY, and so are OUR ACTIONS! Whoever came up with the "Shake the Baby game" needs to be looked into and prosocuted!

Why would anyone want to pretend to have that kind of fun anyway-whether they knew it wasn't a real person or not. It's sick and stupid. People need to find more to do w/ their life than dumb antics like that or spend their time that way.
The idea is just plain ridiculous and so are the people who would buy it and play it.
Our society is going down hill faster and faster each day

Candice said...I think this app is very disturbing...yes some people may think nothing of it an just laugh & truly know you don't shake a baby. However, there is a large part of our population that has difficulty generalizing. Those people may indeed become overwhelmed at some point and do exactly what they did w/their phone. Shake it. & I have worked w/kids like that and it is sad...and its not their fault.

Only someone with an already sick mind would want to play this "game" If this is an example of what we can expect from APPLE, I can assure you, I WILL NOT BE BUYING ANYTHING MADE BY THEM...........EVER
Doesn't anybody there read the news. There have been several cases of babies being shaken to death. This is NOT funny The sick mind at APPLE should be dismissed w/o severance or reccomendation. Maybe somebody should shake him/her until their eyes turn red and they stop doing anything!

Are those so "full of greed" executives at Apple so isolated in their Ivory Towers that their only ambition is to "get more?" They have lost ,if they ever had, the respect for life...including their own. I love the greatest challenge we have in all of mankind; it transends all religious beliefs, all political persuasions, all races, all walds of life...."TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM TREAT YOU.

acrpntr said...The problem with "games" like this is that 1) anyone who finds them even remotely funny is probably posessed of a serious psyhcological, or personality disorder (so if you're one who thinks it's funny, get thee to a psych ward) and 2) they serve to desensitize society to horror, which is a gradual process, culminating in complete societal breakdown and real-life horrors and atrocities. What are we allowing ourselves to become when a large, widely respected company like Apple gives the green light to an app that condones murdering children?

Seth said...Shaking babies in real life is horribly bad. No sane person would argue that point, but jeesh people, it's a joke.
Irreverent? Yes. Hilarious? Possibly, in context. Those lucky enough to not have a crying bag of urine/feces of their own think this is a great way to vent their frustration over parents who think it's their right to disturb everyone with their crotchfruit.
Everything offends someone. Unfortunately, people here in America are yet to figure out that just because something offends you does not give you the right to try to eradicate it. If you don't like something, don't use it. What a simple concept, huh?!?
And when will people figure out that the more you complain, and publicize, these "offensive" items, the more popular you make them. Youth culture, especially, will always want the things there told they should not be allowed to possess. Good luck with that.

Rachel said...Hey Seth,
You were once, (and some might argue, still), a crying bag of urine/feces, "fruit" sprung from your mother's "crotch". It's just too bad she didn't have the good sense to shake you till you stopped crying.
I can tell from your comments she must be very proud.
And if crying "crotchfruit" is so bothersome to you, perhaps you should stay home, because the reason it's called "public" is because anyone can go there, including infants, children, and yes, even obnoxious, opinionated grown men.
