iPhone "Baby Shaker" App Pulled - What Was Apple Thinking?
The description of the now-unavailable app read, "On a plane, on the bus, in a theatre. Babies are everywhere you don't want them to be! They're always distracting you from preparing for that big presentation at work with their incessant crying. Before Baby Shaker there was nothing you could do about it."
And of course, the description included a disclaimer: "Never, never shake a baby."
As you might imagine, there was quite an uproar over this app, primarily from parents. Patrick Donohue, founder of the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation, an organization that helps parents and medical professionals deal with Pediatric Acquired Brain Injuries such those as caused by Shaken Baby Syndrome, wrote directly to Apple CEO Steve Jobs to express his dismay: "As the father of a 3-year-old who was shaken by her baby nurse when she was only 5 days old, breaking 3 ribs, both collarbones and causing a severe brain injury, words cannot describe my reaction." Marilyn Bar, the founder of the US Center for Shaken Baby Syndrome, goes even further: "Not only are they making fun of shaken baby syndrome, but they are actually encouraging it. This is absolutely terrible."
How Safe is Dairy
Does milk really do a body good? Are the hormones safe? Does yogurt help with weight loss, and does kefir promote better digestion? It can be maddening trying to muddle through all the conflicting information out there. We have the down low on which dairy products your family should be eating, drinking and slurping.
jupiterimages
Milk: It's one of the best sources of calcium, needed for building strong bones and teeth and safe weight loss, according to one recent study. Plus, milk is full of protein, fortified with vitamin D and protects against colon cancer. So what's the problem? Well, lactose intolerance for many, probable increased risk of prostate cancer and possible increased risk of ovarian cancer. That's the hormones, found in standard and organic milk (thanks to dairy cows being kept pregnant so that they'll lactate). And that weight-loss study? Funded by the National Dairy Council.

Verdict: There's currently no good scientific evidence that says that drinking more than one glass of milk per day is necessary, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. Given some of the risk factors associated with consuming too much dairy, best to look to non-dairy sources for your daily requirement of calcium (1,000 to 1,200 milligrams). Go for leafy greens, beans and whole grains -- all of which offer countless other health benefits, too.

Cheese: Cheese is the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of the dairy world. On the one hand, we can appreciate delicate shavings of parmesan enhancing the flavor of a salad, or a slice of Bucheron complementing a glass of wine. On the other, we see a slop of melted cheddar oozing over nachos, a roadside stop on the path to obesity or clogged arteries.
Getty Images
Verdict: Think moderation. Most cheese is high in sodium and isn't exactly low-calorie. But the combination of fat and protein in cheese is very satisfying, and it can keep your appetite in check for hours after eating. The endless variety of cheeses can accommodate most tastes and diets: Feta is low in saturated fats, firm ricotta is low in sodium and Swiss offers a real protein punch. Plus, cheese happens to be great for your teeth -- in addition to providing calcium, it changes the pH in your mouth to discourage bacteria.
jupiterimages
Yogurt: Yogurt offers all the benefits of milk, and then some. It's more easily digested than milk and contains friendly bacteria that's good for your intestinal tract. Some studies even show it to boost immunity and fight cancerous tumors. Unfortunately, most of the yogurt you see on supermarket shelves is so highly sweetened that most of the calories in the product come from the sugar, not the yogurt itself.
jupiterimages
Verdict: Buy plain yogurt. It is more nutritious in every way and it's easily sweetened with fruit, maple syrup or agave nectar. Or, don't sweeten it and use it in place of sour cream, milk or mayonnaise when making pancakes, muffins or tuna salad. Also, avoid any yogurt at the store called "lite," as it likely contains artificial sweeteners and colors.
jupiterimages
Kefir: Kefir, which is just now more widely available, is a cultured, enzyme-rich food that contains even more beneficial bacteria than yogurt, as well as healthy yeasts. It also contains the essential amino acid tryptophan, which has a calming effect on the nerves.
jupiterimages
Verdict: Ta-da! Kefir is he healthiest of all the dairy products. But, as with yogurt, it's best to avoid the overly sweetened commercial varieties. Choose plain kefir, or, better yet, you can purchase a starter culture and easily make your own using whatever milk you normally buy.

Apple has removed the program from their iPhone app store and the developer, Sikalosoft, no longer lists it on their website.
We've all experienced the frustration that comes with a baby that won't stop crying. I spent the first three months of my oldest son's life trudging up and down the stairs all night long because that was the only thing that would stop him from crying. And it can be even worse when it's someone else's baby disturbing your meal or interrupting your movie. But, of course, physical abuse is never an option for dealing with an unhappy or inconsolable child. And yet, the developer of this application seems to find this kind of behavior amusing.
I'm sure someone, somewhere, thought, at some point, that this was funny, but someone at Apple, which has been criticized for being too particular about the apps they do approve, certainly made a mistake in approving this one.

Jel said...Seth, you are an idiot. It's not that people just don't "like" this app. It's downright dangerous!!! Probably about 1/2 of adults actively know not to shake a baby and the other 1/2 either don't know or don't have kids and don't make it their business.
The danger here is in the impressionable young minds of teens who aren't quite parents yet, but will be soon. Yes, they are dumb enough to refer back to this sick game and say "well, it worked on the phone, maybe it will work in real life."

Yeah, let's ban this! Because, judging by the comments here, apparently nobody--with the exception of Seth--can tell reality from a GAME. And let's ban people breastfeeding in public, 'cause I REALLY don't want to see that either. And let's ban sex, violence, reality shows, and everything else on t.v.--oh, man, maybe even in REAL LIFE--let's ban sex there too!--violent video games--wow, let's just ban EVERYTHING that offends ANYBODY! Heaven help anyone who's not politically correct... Hey, I hate American Idol---make SURE that gets banned too, because it REALLY offends intelligent people everywhere (all two of us). I don't like it. Let's throw Simon in jail for life, 'cause he annoys me.
Better yet, let's just all move to China and let them tell us how to think, what should & shouldn't offend us, and what we can/can't look at/read/talk about/do/etc. It's for our own "protection" against, apparently, OURSELVES. I mean, if we can't tell that this is just a stupid computer application, maybe everyone SHOULD all be locked up and be mandatorily STERILIZED. A nation that is so stupid that it's taking parenting advice from a video game shouldn't be allowed to reproduce. (Oh, wait, don't they already have a program similar to this in China? The one-kid only policy? Hmm...makes ya' think...looking all over this board, maybe not such a bad idea...)
Seth---agree with you 100%. Probably the only one here who gets what you're saying, but then again, I'm probably the only other one on here with a sense of HUMOR, too. Anyone who wants to bitch about MY opinion--I could care less about YOURS. Get a life--better yet, get a sense of humor & lighten up. Look at it this way--at least it's a way for people in movie theaters, shopping malls, etc., to get out their frustrations about the screaming kids with oblivious parents without actually killing someone else's kid--plus, as you stated at the beginning--the whole thing is IRRELEVANT. Just like the opinions of everyone else on here.
And BTW, last time I checked, "offensive" is subjective. It's not a crime to come up with an "offensive", violent video game and blame a "murder" on it any more than all the crap that Hollywood pushes in slasher movies--none of them go to jail either Until every producer/director/actor/movie studio exec/etc. who ever put out a movie that was violent and was blamed for some moron's serial murders because they "got the idea from a movie", guess you're out of luck with mandatorily banning this, too. SORRY...
P.S. Always love when someone drags out that tired, over-used catchphrase "moral compass" like a it's a friggin' mantra...lol...

ninainindia said...I am with LS on this one. Why is shaking babies on your phone not funny and shouldn't be allowed, when there are tons of games in stores (aimed at children!) advocating killing people by running them over with your car? People die in car accidents, just like babies die from shaking baby syndrome. Neither is funny, if you make fuss over 1 you should make a fuss over both.

JR said...The BIG difference IS the content. If there was a game based on raping babies and then killing them, it would NOT be on the shelves. GTA is for adults about adults doing "bad" things in a game. If a game was a PEDO game, trust me, it would be OFF the Shelves as well! As it should. And shaking a baby is a common crime against a minor, child. It should not be glamorized or laughed at. So many pathetic people already take it lightly and hurt and kill babies. I recently got to see a video of a baby's eyes after being shaken and later died. The eyes broke my spirit and here this game aims for the red X eyes....truly sick. If you are an adult who likes to pretend to kill other adults in your game boy, that's your problem, don't encourage children and babies to get hurt along with all this other crap!

Blurgle said...ninainindia posted this in part: "Why is shaking babies on your phone not funny and shouldn't be allowed, when there are tons of games in stores (aimed at children!) advocating killing people by running them over with your car?"
My reply: Actually, IF you mean the GTA series for instance, it is NOT aimed at children. Video games have a rating system similar to movies in the USA. The Grand Theft Auto series consistantly gets a "M" rating, which would more or less equate to an "R" for a film, in fact a "M" is perhaps a slightly stronger rating. A "M" rating on a game means that the game is not to be sold to those under the age of 18. Now do retailers sell said games to people under 18 with such a rating? Some might, some might not. But that's just like movie theatres that might let people under 17 get into a R rated film.
Anyway, you're just ASSUMING that video game means it's marketed for children. That is obviously not the case with any game that gains a "M" rating or stronger.
With regards to the Baby Shaker application, it is very distasteful, yes. If Apple wishes to no longer sell it, that is their decision. But I will say though that if the application was marketed with a "M" rating that as much as I found it distasteful, the people do have a right to sell it..if they can find a store to sell it for them. But then again, consider this: Most video games are sold for multiple "platforms", the GTA series that I mentioned is usually sold to be played on 2 or 3 game systems, and then a few months later ported so a version of it can also be played on the PC. This application was made to be sold on one specific piece of electronics, period. If GTA gets a bad reputation, it doesn't hurt the reputation of any one specific video game system or resellers of personal computers. It only hurts Rockstar Games, the people that produce GTA. If this Baby Shaker application gets a bad reputation, and if Apple contunued to sell it, it would be much more likely to hurt Apple's reputation. THAT right there makes comparing the Baby Shaker application somewhat of an apples to oranges (no pun intended) comparsion to video games played on the computer or a game system.

Second idea: A game for shaking text messagers who can't keep from walking in front of cars and trains.

Andrea said...The problem with this is that teenagers, who are usually the ones to get these applications, are more and more often becoming babies with babies. This encourages shaking a baby to make it quiet down...Specifically, someone else's baby! Any game that promotes violence should be taken off the market...but the point is, that this is encouraging the abuse, permanent injury and even death of a helpless child...for simply communicatin! Crying is their only means of communication. It is absolutely disgusting!

But a baby....that's different...

I cant and dont even want to imagine anyone hurting my sweet precious little boy. What were they thinking making it seem OKAY to shake a baby to make it stop crying!!!! That is backwards education. That is undoing all the hard work good people have been trying to do to educate people on the dangers and fatalities of shaking a baby. I think someone needs to do community service or go to jail for assesory to murder for that app... sure its extreme but so was allowing such an insensitive app to be sold or givin out. God only knows just what that really put into peoples heads I mean some dumb people probably now think it is okay to actually shake a baby. THROW THE CREATOR AND THE PERSON WHO OKAYED IT IN JAIL FOR ACCESSORY TO MURDER!!!!!!!!!!!!! TEACH THEM JUST HOW WRONG THAT REALLY WAS MAKE APOLOGY COMMERCIALS TO GO ON EVERY CHANNEL THAT EXPLAIN HOW WRONG THEY WERE AND JUST HOW WRONG IT REALLY IS TO SHAKE A BABY. FIX THIS NOW!!! SHUTTING DOWN THAT APP IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!! IM OUTRAGED.

We the people have to stand up to these greed driven sell outs in big decision making positions.

Wake up!!!! Every time I think we have sunk as far as we can go...I find out, I am once again mistaken. With a child being abused every three seconds in the USA, do we really want to send the message that it's OK to shake a baby? Babies are dying from Shaken Baby Syndrome in alarming rates here in America, and now we're making a game out of it? Dear God, have we lost all moral compass? What will the great minds of "game inventors" come up with next? I shudder at the thought!

I am in awe at how people have conditioned themselved to believe in their minds what is right and wrong. But I bet if Obama said it was ok to start partial birth abortion today that would be a great thing and everyone would bebe singing praises to Ala for that! Yet, there are people who will indeed stop buying Apple products for a game! A GAME! This whole thing makes me feel sick when I think about it.
