Our favorite Duggar Family Guidelines, which Michelle says reinforce character:
1. Always use soft words, even when you don't feel well.
2. Always display kind actions, even if you have been mistreated.
3. Show joyful attitudes even when no one is looking.
4. Have sincere motives with no thought of self-gain.
5. Never let the sun go down on your wrath; don't go to bed angry or guilty.

At first, I was trying to potty train the children when they were too young to even pull down their pants and put them back on by themselves. They could "perform" if I was there to help them with all the mechanics, but if I wasn't there, they weren't successful. If they could get their britches down, they could almost never get them back up. Now I don't start potty training until the child is able to take his or her pants off and put them back on without my help. (I'm not a perfectionist. If they get them on backward, that's okay; at least they get them on!)
J.S. Wedgeworth, Chicago Tribune / MCT
The other (potty training) requirement is that they have to be able to climb up on the "big potty" by themselves. I never liked the separate little potty chairs. They just added one more thing that had to be cleaned in the bathroom, and too often the child wanted to be helpful and empty it him/herself, and the results were, shall we say, unpleasant. Before I start potty training, I want to make sure the child can climb up on a regular-size commode without assistance.
Beth Hall, AP
Summertime is the best time of year to potty train because there aren't as many clothes to deal with. To get started, we have the usual pep talk, explain the whole procedure, and proudly announce to the family that this child now is wearing "big-girl panties" or "big-boy underwear." We do take the child to the bathroom throughout the day and encourage him or her to give it a try. When the child is successful, I reward him or her with a Skittle or an M&M, and the whole family cheers when he or she comes out of the restroom, hands washed and ready to receive that treat.
Beth Hall, AP
We also use potty training to reinforce important character qualities we want to instill in our children: obedience, self-control, and attentiveness. (I tell them) there is a little alarm in your body that tells you, "I've gotta go potty." That's when you practice self-control. You need to stop what you're doing and instantly obey that initial prompting and run to the bathroom. That way, you stay clean and dry, and everybody is happy. There are no messes, and you're showing Mommy that you are learning to be a big kid and practice self-control and obedience.
Beth Hall, AP
As other potty-training mothers of sons know, little boys tend to get distracted easily while they're going to the bathroom. For this reason, I made the rule that they have to sit on the commode until they learn not to spray the walls or make a mess on the floor. Of course they want to stand like a big boy, but often they're too short at first, so they have to stand on their tippy-toes and that's when the problems start. So they sit until I'm assured the bathroom is not going to be a target range.
Beth Hall, AP
Potty training is certainly a lot easier now than it was when we started twenty years ago, both because we've learned a lot and because now each new trainee has a large crowd of siblings providing praise and encouragement and motivating the trainee to succeed. There's nothing like coming out of the bathroom after a successful experience and having a dozen or more siblings excitedly waiting to give you a congratulatory hurrah or a high-five.
Beth Hall, AP
We begin our daily routine with personal hygiene (get dressed, brush teeth, comb hair, etc.). Each older child has a younger buddy (or two) that they help. We eat breakfast and read the Proverb of the day, then we "quick clean" the house (older child and their buddy work together to clean their jurisdictions). Throughout the day we try to pickup as we go along, but naturally things tend toward disorder. So, it is a constant training process with "quick clean" times throughout the day.

We have a master schedule of each family member's responsibilities displayed on our kitchen wall. For each month, we also have individual daily checklists which cover schoolwork, chores, music lessons and personal hygiene. These were designed...so we could see at a glance how each child is doing. These checklists enable us to keep our children accountable and also reward them accordingly.

We have goals, but then we have reality! We are learning to practice flexibility -- not setting our affections on ideas or plans which could be changed! Sometimes we have "Daddy Days" when Daddy overrides the schedule and takes the children out for family time, a field trip or a service project. We try to make each day fun. Everyday is an exciting adventure!

To compare them to "Octomom" who went into her delivery broke and unable to care for the children she already had. She KNEW she was having 8 children at once and thought that she'd be showered with freebies and gifts but she was wrong. She does get free clothing from one company, but "Octomom" and Michelle Dugar are night and day. Also, as far as Michelle Dugar homeschooling her children, she was a teacher before getting married, so she has the knowledge and certainly the patience to homeschool and do it correctly. On another note, this IS America. if someone chooses to have 39 children, that's their choice and no one's business. I have 8 children myself, and my 6 adult children are doing VERY well in their chisen fields and in life in general. You and no one else has any business to generalize on people's choice to have large families. Not ALL of us live "off the system". We never have and the Duggars obviously never will either.

I believe they have done a fantastic job raising their children and as long as she can care for and support all of her children then we are in no place to judge how many children she has. If the good lord wants to give them 25 kids then so be it.. it was in Gods will for them. Shame on you for being so q

Let the kids be kids, what if something happened to one of the kids the kid is watching. Wouldn't that make them feel gulty the rest of thier life. I don;t even want to watch someone's kid in fear of something bad happening. To much stress, now she wants all these babies let her be a maid to them. She looks good, so she must be over working those kids.
I try to let my kid be a kid, only have 2 but I do not make my older kid be resonsible for the other.
She should not even be on a reality show if she really cares for her kids, someone could kidnap them or hurt them thru all of this.
With that big house and all the nuts in the world, shelter your kids don't explot them for money!!!
Hey be responsible.

Rachel, did it ever cross you're mind that this family buys "used" for a reason?? Maybe material things aren't as important to them, maybe that's how they've been able to stay DEBT FREE!! I'm not very religious but the fact that they are, doesn't bother me one bit because I've seen how they are with their kids, the values they're teaching them, etc. This family doesn't take ANYTHING for granted and IMO, that's a plus. When I was growing up, we used hammydowns (sp?). Did that make my parents "bad parents" because we did?? While our family wasn't their size, there were SEVEN of us and guess what?? Mom and Dad took care of us just fine and they taught us values, etc. We might have not have had the newest toy on the shelf or name brand cloths but we had what we NEEDED, much like this family. I'm just guessing from your post here but it seems that you would much rather see these parents raise their kids the way Jon and Kate have. Well, to each his own but IMHO, Jon and Kate are doing an injustice to their kids. Sooner or later those kids are going to grow up and then they're going to have to be out in the "real world", work a real job and soon they're going to learn that you can't have everything your little heart desires. Can you imagine what that's going to do to them?? It's a scary thought actually... Peace

Amanda said...I do agree that the older kids are raising the younger ones, I read how they each have a "buddy" or two. That should not be the responsiblitiy of the older children. I think the parent should be able to take care of the younger ones alone, of course some help is always welcome but they are forced to do this job. I am not saying they are not happy and of course they have the money but I do think its wrong for the older children. The older children may say they don't care but thats because thats all they know. But people should get facts before dissing these people.

Rebecca said...Sad and all the others who mention the individual time with their children seems deficient. Maybe so, maybe no. HOWEVER, you don't see any of THEIR kids shooting up schools and shopping malls, pregnant and unmarried, on drugs, drunk, etc. Perhaps we should all be raising our kids like them.

I have 10 kids and they will get to be adults, hopefully not mean to others. I can't type so hot cause my newborn is on my knee, and you just can't live in town with lots of kids, since there's not enough room or privacy to be safe. Just have to do what's best for your family, not have one if you don't love Jesus or your life. Take care, and be nice.

I just don't understand why people like this are considered "heroes" just for having an obnoxious amount of children when they don't even have the money to support the ones they already have
-----------------------Actually the Duggars never took a dime until they started their reality show which was only a few years ago. They have paid their own way and don't buy on credit. They are very frugal, and spend money wisely, and don't mind buying their clothes second hand or making the girls dresses themselves. Not everyone is on welfare. Some are actually hardworking and pay their own way.

But once I actually watched the show, I just couldn't maintain the hate. Michelle especially is just so gentle and kind-hearted - a truly wonderful mother. Their children are happy, well-adjusted, well-behaved and have been taught the importance of selflessness and serving others. That's quite an accomplishment for a family of any size. My hat is off to these parents, even though many of our other beliefs (religious, political, social) differ greatly.

I am trying my damdest to control it, but I am too overwhelmed with working, cooking dinner, and trying to keep our head above waters, sometimes its really difficult to be so positive, when everything around you is so negative.

Maybe kids can see you need help(I mean when we let out steam), and that we're human and not actors on tv, but it gets confusing with everyone saying they are better because they use birth control to seem under control or cool. God can see right through this vanity. really, be human, right? It's not supposed to be easy, but the kids might learn compassion, someday, and it's reality, real ---not tv.just shut it off and spend time with them, they are yours. do I make sense?

The only reason people had larger families then was due to the mortality rate of the time, or you want to out-populate the competeing religious sect. Larger families now are popular because it seems that these couples want to see what small mammals endure. Problem with this is mammals such as rats endure it ALL AT ONCE. You want to love that many children, adopt. You don't have to be Bradgelina or Mabs to adopt, ther're plenty of people throwing perfectly good children away. This planet has enough problems with population strain without people like Octo-womb or the Duggars trying to outbreed the world. You want to express your genetic diversity? Have two, then adopt. You wonder why there's such a thing as war and famine. You don't need diapers, you need super glue people.

rosieocon said...The principle cause of famine in the world today is not from an overabundance of people.....the USA and many other countries are constantly sending food, clothing, medical and school supplies to countries in need. The GOVERNMENTS of these countries are the reason why the food, etc. never gets to the needy people. Remember the rash of 'piracies' lately? Do you think there was gold bullion on those ships? Or, maybe 'yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum'? There was food, supplies, etc, that were and are being DELIBERATELY kept from the people who need them BY THEIR OWN GOVERNMENTS--it's much easier to starve your people and keep them 'in line' than, God forbid, to provide them with basic needs. And wars? How about OIL, RELIGION, MONEY----come on, world peace does not hang on how many children a couple does or does not choose to have. If they come knocking on your door for help, THEN worry about...til then, let these people raise and love their children in peace
