Student's Harvey Milk Report Censored By School

The problem? That figure was Harvey Milk, the first gay man elected to a political office in the U.S. when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977.
Theresa Grace, principal of Mt. Woodsen Elementary School, which Natalie attends, decided that before Natalie's fellow sixth graders could learn about Harvey Milk's life and death, they'd need permission from their parents. She cited a district policy that requires parents give written permission before their children are taught about sex. But Natalie didn't want to teach her fellow students about sex, she wanted to share what she knew about Harvey Milk.

Ultimately, Natalie was allowed to give her presentation, but not in class. She shared it with eight of her 13 fellow students during a school lunch period. That decision drew the attention of the ACLU, which is considering suing the Ramona school district. "It's not about sex, it's not about sex education. It's a presentation about a historical figure who happened to be gay," says David Blair-Loy, legal director of San Diego county's ACLU.
The ACLU would like to see the district apologize to Natalie and let her share her presentation in class. And then, they want the district to clarify their sex ed policies. "Harvey Milk was an elected official in this state and an important person in history," says Natalie's mom, Bonnie Jones. "To say my daughter's presentation is sex education because Harvey Milk happened to be gay is completely wrong."
What do you think about the principal's decision to censor Natalie's report?

If all those spewing hate here actually did some research they would know that his personal life only spurred his ambition to make all people equal. All the so called christians on this board need to go back and read there bibles because Jesus would not stand for condemnation of other people. As a matter of fact he stood up for the so called "sinners" against the so called "christians" when he replied "he,without sin, shall cast the first stone" and "judge not lest ye be judged".Think about it people. All the so called christians on here spewing hate will be in danger of hell fire and brimstone because the bible says that only God can judge...yet here they are judging away as if they have the right. I'd rather be gay and face my maker with a loving heart as be straight and face him with all the deeds recorded of bashing ,hate and judgement.

In order to give that report, you have to tell kids what being gay means. My kids don't need to learn that in elementary school.
In older grades that is fine...

AJ said...Of course we don't know what was in the report, but I doubt it was full of sexual content. Would there have been such a disturbance if the child had written about Thomas Jefferson? Facts indicate that he was a an adulterer and that he fathered several children by one of his slaves (property). Maybe we need to have reports about him censored? Harvey Milk may or may not have been a good politician - I never heard of him.....however, he was a part of California political history. Censoring his story is not going to change that fact.

If this school is in a conservative district, the principal bears the burden of responsibility of adhering to the district policy on sex ed. She just wanted to err on the side of caution. Even though my students have all seen PG13 movies, I caught hell for showing the students a movie about a missionary that was very violent....I caught it from the parents! They "say" they would have opted out of the film if I had given them the opportunity. (No, the wouldn't have) but, any after -effects from the student viewing the movie would have been on them. So, it is best to follow the course that the principal did in this case, whether she wanted to or not. She was just doing her job.

Keeping in mind the fact that the vast majority of 8th graders have tapioca between their ears. It is being done to 1-make a civil suit, 2-ensure a scholarship for a "gifted" child, give me a break! Obviously along with the bio of Harvey Milk will come questions "what is gay"?-Well the principal is correct! What if parents don't want their children to discuss it FOR WHATEVER reason as parents they may have. My advice is let the kid give the presentation and give the rest of the kids the day off if their parents request it! This will avoid martyrdom for the poor repressed liberal in training child!

Do we say, first the man puts his penis in the woman's vagina, NO! For that same reason if a child asked "what is Gay" we would not go into a sexual response...being gay is not all about sex...it's about love and who they choose to love...

I wonder if the principal of this childs school would have censored a report about Adolf Hitler or Richard Nixon. I think not. This childs report was censored strickly because it was about the life of a homosexual man who was politically active and was not afraid, even though it cost him his life, to run for office. He did not do this because he wanted to be the first gay elected to office. He did this because there were things that he saw were not being achieved by his local government and insead of sitting on the porch or at the bar complaining he chose to get out there and try to change things. I wonder mr wacko if you have that same amount of courage? Do you sit around and complain about your government to anyone who will listen or are you active in you community and willing to put your lifestyle under a microscope in order to bring about change?
These questions are being asked of you by woman who you would condem because of her many beliefs. But then again you would probebly condem me because i am a woman who speaks her mind.
Peace in your life sir

apes1313 said..."If you want to talk about abominations, look at your wonderful straight world, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, etc. nothing but immoral degenrate sluts, and what about your super conservative politicians and preachers?"
I'm so sick of people bashing straight people by the VERY FEW who make bad decisions. I am straight and I am not an "immoral degenerate slut". Nor are any of my straight friends. Nor are most of the HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of straight people around the world. Saying that straight people are like this is like picking out the few homosexuals that are slutty and disgusting any saying that ALL of them are like that. If you are homosexual and want to defend yourself, fine, but do not do it by bashing others. That makes you just as bad as the minority of people that you are putting down.
P.S. And saying that something someone is doing is wrong, doesn't mean that you hate that person. When your child does something wrong, you tell them that it is wrong because you care about them and don't want to see them get in trouble/hurt themselves, but do you hate them? No! The Bible says to love everyone, no matter what, but you can disagree with someone and still love and respect them.

emerald said...Oh to be certain this wishing to speak out in America and not be judged is incorrect.
To speak out in this country is a right, whatever consequences one suffers from their verbalized thoughts is just the way of the world.
As anyone has the right to say what they want, I have the right to not listen, think youre pretty silly, or speak against all that youve just said without being thrown into jail.
One is not free from judgement in this or any country for partaking in the freedom of speech. That is why I insist that my students make it count.
Bottom line, there are things that just do not belong in school and severely detract from the lessons that are supposed to be taught.

Laura Craft said...When my child was in 4th grade she had to do a report on Marie Curie.( The scientist that did the front work on radiation, etc) Part of the report was her moral values (required). Marie Curie was involved with a married man and was subject to news editorials about her low moral behavior. My child HAD to report on this to her 4th grade class. I questioned the school district and was told that she was in a gifted and talented class and more was expected. When she did the same report in 8th grade, the teacher thought it was offensive. Go figure.

Otherwise, they would realize it is not merely just a choice.
