In 1962, President John Kennedy went to France, where he introduced himself by saying, "I am the man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris." Barack Obama may very well find himself using some version of Kennedy's quip this weekend: He's taking daughters Malia and Sasha on their first official White House trip abroad and we're sure that while the French will be happy to see the President and First Lady again, they'll be more excited about the First Kids.
Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, finished school at Sidwell Friends on Thursday; today, they're jetting off to meet their parents in France. The Obamas will be visiting the cliffs of Normandy to mark the 65th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. The President will return to Washington on Sunday, but the girls are going on to Paris with the First Lady and the three will stay into next week. The White House is not releasing any information about the family's sightseeing plans, saying only that this is a private family trip.
While this is their first big journey since their father became President, it's not the first trip abroad for Malia and Sasha; they went to Kenya with their parents in 2006. They've never been to Europe, though, and we imagine they're pretty excited.
The trip comes at a perfect time; school is out for the summer, and Sasha Obama is turning 8 next week. And what a way to kick off summer, with a girls weekend in Paris with Mom!

President Obama told "Newsweek" that dating "will be an issue" for his girls. "I have men with guns surrounding them at all times, which I'm perfectly happy with, but they may feel differently about it."

The Obama girls were easy, breezy and totally adorable on their father's inauguration day. Malia, 10, wore a double-breasted periwinkle-blue coat with a blue-ribbon tied in a bow at the waist. Seven-year-old Sasha wore a matching outfit in pinks and corals; both coats were from Crewcuts by J. Crew.

JackieJ said...I do think that Obama is over the top in his spending. I don't think people would mind if they thought he was legitimate. All he has to do is pay $12 and get a Birth Certificate from Hawaii to prove who he says he is. Anyone running for President must prove he is eligible, not the People that he isn't. How did this fraud happen?

No ObamaNation said...OK, I'm a Republican, but as American citizens it's our duty to support the president. We will have a chance to fix this situation in 3.5 years, unless of course he's impeached before then. In the meantime however, we must unite and stand behind our leader. The first thing we should do is get him a reasonably attractive wife. He is the president afterall, and making appearances all over the world with that thing is very damaging. Everyone, write to your congressmen so we can help our president.

supattana said...Thank God there are people who respond thoughtfully to some of the rude, ignorant, and disrespectful people who write hateful remarks about the First Family. How many of the haters who write have any understanding about the good will generated by the President's necessary trips. Attending to foreign policy and international relations are part of the President's responsibility. I can't imagine many of these negatively charged individuals would have worked so hard to become a servant of the people and then sustained that hard work to continue serving. These are not pleasure trips; do you have any idea how important it is to generate good will by making truthful and carefully crafted speeches? Please go work on yourselves; raise your character, enhance the level of your integrity, learn how to write properly, AND inform yourself about the tasks allotted to the President. Scary...no wonder we are lagging in so many areas in this country with this low level of functional intelligence.

LB stated that it is "routine for families of those serving the country in the armed forces to be able to fly on the country's dime, if you will, for what ever reason they like." My son is over seas in the airforce... he has been gone over a year and is coming home for a months leave before returning back over seas. The government is not paying his way. While over seas, if he has the time off and wants to take a 2 or 3 day trip, he also pays for that... not the government... I'm not sure who LB is talking about when they refer to "people in the armed forces but to me, it's the men and women who are out there fighting for us. Obama is not fighting for us, he is apologizing for us!

I think it's wonderful for the kids to be having a week with their Mom and I'm sure the French are flattered that they chose Paris.
Michelle earned her own money as an attorney. Why shouldn't she spend it on her kids??
She was wearing designer clothing long before she was First Lady. Give it a rest...give yourself a break and go stay at the closest Holiday Inn with a free buffet.

He's such a transparent and flagrant narcissist, as is his wife, that I was intelligent enough to see the handwriting on the wall. Not so the huge batch of his Kool-Aid drinkers who swallow every drop of crap he puts out, and then wonder why they're getting sicker and sicker.
You BET I don't like them spending our money, giving his "kids the trip of a lifetime"....or a date night, either. Guess if we want to feel better about things, we should all go join ACORN. (I get to be Mickey Mouse...oooops, another voter already used that name).

Obama received donations from millions of everyday people, starting with donations of $5 per month. If you add that up, it will equate to why his campaign received large donations in a month. Oh when Sarah Palin made her first appearance at the RNC, the Obama campaign received over 30 million in one night. Do the math, the research before you spew junk. I just couldn't invest the time I see GOP'ers spending with their petty little remarks in every message string about how Obama's spending their precious tax dollars. Here is a man who is going the extra mile to fix the mess that Bush left us and he gets nailed for everything he does. Well, I've lived 65 years now and this is by far the best president we have had in my lifetime. He has a long way to go but I'm confident that he will get us there. I hope that the Obamas take every opportunity to take their children on foreign trips so they, too, might have the understanding their parents have of the world and its people.
At least we aren't paying for hundreds of trips to a ranch in Texas and more vacation time than any man could ever ask for.
