Celebrity Potty Training Anecdotes
We ran a series of potty training questions past some of ParentDish's celebrity mommy friends, who were generous enough to share their experiences with us. So far, we have heard some of their best advice, as well as some specific tips and strategies. Now we move on to the inevitable silly potty stories!
ParentDish asked...Do you have any funny potty training anecdotes or horror stories you can share?
Chyler Leigh
Once my son (who's now 5), became aware that he had to poop at around 2 years old, he would hide and/or suddenly become very quiet. One day we had put him in his room for his nap and he decided that he no longer wanted to keep his dirty diaper on. Well, since he had been making noise and suddenly got quiet, I figured that he had either fallen asleep very quickly or was up to no good. My husband ran upstairs to check on him and then immediately yelled for me. Assuming the worst, I headed up. And sure enough, my son had taken his dirty diaper (and all that was inside of it) and smeared it all over the wall. Unfortunately for us, we had a short cut shag carpet that the remnants of poo easily burrowed into. That's when we knew that it was time to look into potty training.

My first daughter potty trained herself by 18 months (because of the cloth diapers -- I'm convinced). Our second daughter didn't get out of nighttime diapers until she was a little over 4, but as soon as she said to me she wanted to not wear a diaper to bed, we started letting her go and there have been many wet beds to deal with, but we have a great waterproof mattress cover (from Pottery Barn Kids) under the sheets. We still take her to the bathroom in the middle of the night when one of us gets up to go. It's pretty funny because she stays asleep when we put her on the potty -- we can plop her right back on the bed after and she never even notices. Now she rarely has an accident. When she does have an accident, we try to make light of it and tell her it's no big deal, but when there are dry sheets we always try to make sure and tell her how proud we are of her.

Brooke Burke
I potty trained my first daughter on an island, she was able to go in nature when she felt the sensation, so there were no accidents trying to make it to a restroom.

Too many to count. But I did end up cutting a hole in Mason's diaper to try to get him to go #2 on the potty, and when it fell out of his diaper, he ran around the bathroom, yelling and stepping in it. It was traumatic, but it worked.

Chocolate seems to work wonders! Ashby takes after her father and LOVES anything chocolate....M&Ms, chocolate chip cookies, etc. After she has a successful potty time, I sometimes give her a sweet surprise! Now she can't wait to go the the potty because she loves to get her M&M's after!

Chandra Wilson
I would have my girls spend time sitting (on the potty) until the tinkle showed up. Then we would "pat, pat, pat, pat, put it in the potty" with the tissue.

Well with twins, when one has to go, it gives the other the idea that maybe THEY have to go too! In fact, one time I went into my twins' Max and Kate's room and smelled something suspicious. I looked in the toilet, looked around the room, but found nothing. Later that evening, when I still smelled the suspect odor, I asked the kids about it and found out that while one had been using the toilet, the other had to go so badly that he went number 2 in the trash can!!

Melissa Longshore said...TO BETH: Shame on you for teaching your sons that it's perfectly okay, & even ENCOURAGING THEM, to urinate on trees or car tires!!
And then using fear to potty-train your daughter!! I don't know how old your boys are now, but don't you know that if they urinate outside as young men they could be arrested for indecent exposure?! And since they were taught that this is acceptable behavior, it's highly likely that they may do this. And it's no wonder your poor daughter has never had an accident ..... if she ever did she would certainly never tell anyone since you used fear to potty-train her!!

I am so sure your text book kids are perfect.... but honey, this isn't a perfect world, and Lord knows my kids are not perfect. I am not a perfect mom.... but I will tell you this I am perfect for my kids. As for my daughter.... she is an A student taking accelerated classes now. She loves her monsters and she loves her mom.... so bite me!

Jen said...I never scared my daughter into training...she was great from the get-go! She takes all her ques from us so we were very relaxed and fun about the whole thing, so it was fun for her too. I'm not sure I would ever tell her a monster wanted wet panties from her....hahaha, I think it would give her nightmares.

Her daughter didn't take long to catch on to the whole thing. Her son on the other hand.... Well, 1 problem was he didn't have a "Daddy" figure at the time that could show him how boys potty. He gave it a shot and the poor baby! He didn't lift the seat up far enough so hust when he started to go, BAM, ther seat fell closed and pintched his "little willie"! He screamed and yelled and .... It was quit some time before he would try it again. My sis went in the bathroom with him and watcged him put the seat up and he looked at her (with the biggest eyes you have ever seen) is this good Mommy? She said "Perfect, Bub!" Then she stepped out so he could T.C.B.

kelly said...Hey i have a strange idea, how about letting them do it when they are ready, i think most of you have control issues, a child will potty train and there is no set age for doing so, you all are just scaring and rushing these poor kids, i didnt find a one of you that should be parents.

Victoria said...Kelly, how many kids do you have?
The idea of letting them decide when they are ready just does not always work plus the longer you wait the MORE tramatic it is to the child. My mom had my brother & I in cloth diapers and we both potty trained early. As for any trauma this may have created, I don't even remember it (neither will most children) and my mom is my best friend.
What you don't seem to realize is that it is NOT a parent's job to be their child's friend. They are there to help that child grow up into a healthy adult. Parents can be friends with their children when they are adults but any parent that always tries to be friends with their child is doing them a disservice.
As any well adjusted adult if they ever disliked their parents and they will ALL tell you yes (if they are honest) and I bet you that not a single one will state potty training as the reason why they did not like their parents.
GROW UP!!!!

Bonnie said...My oldest daughter was afraid to go #2. She would hold it until we put a diaper on her for bed. Two minutes later we had to change her again. She had been trained for #1 for six months. It was December, so I had my father call her up and pretend he was Santa. He told her that if she proved she was a big girl and went #2 on the potty, he would give her a special surprise for Christmas. That same day she did her #2. We took her to the Toy's R Us, to get her a big girl gift. While there she was so excited about being a big girl, that when we were in the check out lane she yelled out about how many other kids were there because they also pooped in the potty.

Then you said something about pull, do you mean pull up panties like a diaper type panty? Just check over what you write , sound it out to see if it sounds correct.

Nolene said...I have seven kids and all my kids were completely potty trained by age 2. I have 4 boys and 3 girls. My advice is to be consistent. I would have a potty in my bathroom and when they were able to sit up they would sit on it whenever I went or dad went to potty. Then reward with one sweet tart and then made a big deal over it.My earliest one was 15 mts.
