Celebrity Potty Training Anecdotes
We ran a series of potty training questions past some of ParentDish's celebrity mommy friends, who were generous enough to share their experiences with us. So far, we have heard some of their best advice, as well as some specific tips and strategies. Now we move on to the inevitable silly potty stories!
ParentDish asked...Do you have any funny potty training anecdotes or horror stories you can share?
Chyler Leigh
Once my son (who's now 5), became aware that he had to poop at around 2 years old, he would hide and/or suddenly become very quiet. One day we had put him in his room for his nap and he decided that he no longer wanted to keep his dirty diaper on. Well, since he had been making noise and suddenly got quiet, I figured that he had either fallen asleep very quickly or was up to no good. My husband ran upstairs to check on him and then immediately yelled for me. Assuming the worst, I headed up. And sure enough, my son had taken his dirty diaper (and all that was inside of it) and smeared it all over the wall. Unfortunately for us, we had a short cut shag carpet that the remnants of poo easily burrowed into. That's when we knew that it was time to look into potty training.

My first daughter potty trained herself by 18 months (because of the cloth diapers -- I'm convinced). Our second daughter didn't get out of nighttime diapers until she was a little over 4, but as soon as she said to me she wanted to not wear a diaper to bed, we started letting her go and there have been many wet beds to deal with, but we have a great waterproof mattress cover (from Pottery Barn Kids) under the sheets. We still take her to the bathroom in the middle of the night when one of us gets up to go. It's pretty funny because she stays asleep when we put her on the potty -- we can plop her right back on the bed after and she never even notices. Now she rarely has an accident. When she does have an accident, we try to make light of it and tell her it's no big deal, but when there are dry sheets we always try to make sure and tell her how proud we are of her.

Brooke Burke
I potty trained my first daughter on an island, she was able to go in nature when she felt the sensation, so there were no accidents trying to make it to a restroom.

Too many to count. But I did end up cutting a hole in Mason's diaper to try to get him to go #2 on the potty, and when it fell out of his diaper, he ran around the bathroom, yelling and stepping in it. It was traumatic, but it worked.

Chocolate seems to work wonders! Ashby takes after her father and LOVES anything chocolate....M&Ms, chocolate chip cookies, etc. After she has a successful potty time, I sometimes give her a sweet surprise! Now she can't wait to go the the potty because she loves to get her M&M's after!

Chandra Wilson
I would have my girls spend time sitting (on the potty) until the tinkle showed up. Then we would "pat, pat, pat, pat, put it in the potty" with the tissue.

Well with twins, when one has to go, it gives the other the idea that maybe THEY have to go too! In fact, one time I went into my twins' Max and Kate's room and smelled something suspicious. I looked in the toilet, looked around the room, but found nothing. Later that evening, when I still smelled the suspect odor, I asked the kids about it and found out that while one had been using the toilet, the other had to go so badly that he went number 2 in the trash can!!

Lisa said...After months and months of struggling with my 3 year old son's total disinterest in potty training, it dawned on me to make it a fun game........
I put a bunch of Fruit Loops Cereal in the toilet and told him it was a game.........he had to "blast" away the green ones by peeing on them. It worked! He couldn't wait to go potty after that!

Like Nancy O'Dell's child my sister likes chocolate, stickers and playing in my bedroom! So if she goes number 1 she gets a sticker. If she goes number 2 she gets chocolate. And if he goes number one and two at once she gets to play in my bedroom! The way we train her is very easy and little children enjoy doing stuff themselves!

Jackie said...My husband & son were in the backyard, and my son had to go. The old man told him the best part of being a guy was you could go outside. My son told my husband to go first. Being a good father, he set the example. My son then came running and screaming into the house that daddy was peeing on the trees and proceeded on into the bathroom to do his business. He was 15 months old.

Eileen said...When my daughter who is now 35 was being potty trained, we had been shopping and she wanted little girl panties with flowers and butterflies on them. I picked up the panties and read her the LABEL which I told her said. "Cannot make pee pee in these panties!" She promised and so I bought her the panties... UNFORETUNATELY I did not tell her that it said that you cannot make poo poo in these panties because she continued to do that until we bought more panties in which you could not make poo poo. This little two year old knew which panties were which. Because she made poo in a pair of panties and informed me that they were no pee pee panties and not poo poo panties. Amazing! She was the easiest child to potty train and would have been easier if I had thought to separate pee pee from poo poo. So it is training the mom and not the child that is important.

Melissa said...All I had to do with my daughter was let her go for bare-butt for one week. Sure she peed on the floor a few times, but she learned. She was almost 3 at the time. She has developmental delays and I thought that potty training would be a real challange for her like everything else, but it was soooo easy! We really lucked out.

Mandy said...I have five children, and they all trained differently. The oldest was a poo poo Picaso at naptime, and after several "masterpieces" we had her clean it up herself, and she never did it again. However it was still years before she trained fully. Kid 2 recieved a pack of big boy undies for his third b-day and the next day anounced that he had gone pee and poopy in the toilet and that was all it took. The twins # 3 and 4 were totally different, she saw big sis do it and she had the business down before she was 2, but her brother took FOREVER and is now 6 and still has night trouble. We just encourage him and never make a big deal about accidents. Kid 5 was easy, we gave her a potty chair waited for something to come out and rewarded her with 1 m&m for pee and 2 for a poopy. It took less than a week and she was using the big toilet. My husband says the worst memory of his entire life was his mother squishing the mess in his face as a child and forcing him to clean it out himself with bleach in the toilet. Thank goodness he doesn't take after her!

Jess said...your husband's mother is evil! that's something u do with animals not people! I loved stickers as a kid and my mom had a piece of paper hanging on the wall i got to put up a sticker every time i went and if i wet the bed i had to change my sheets but that was only because i still wet the bed troubles like once every three months when i was like 5 (i was a deep sleeper, i didn't notice). the sticker thing worked for pee-pee but i only learned to do #2 in the pottie when my cousins who r 2 years older came and they could do it becuz they were big girls. i wanted to be like them becuz they were cool, i didn't think my mom was.

Bonnie said...I have 4 children and the thrid child started reverting back to being a baby when my last child arrived. She started going for attention at 3. My husband and I told her that bacteria bugs will get her now that she is 3 if she goes pee pee or poo poo in her pants. Big sisters are not allowed to do this. Well, a few hours later we hear a blood curdling scream upstairs in her bathroom. We ran upstairs and she had stripped all her clothes yelling that bugs were coming and was pointing to a lonely ant that made it's way into the bathroom! We said we told you. From that day on, day or night, she was trained and she told her little sister the same thing. It worked!

Nadimah said...It is pretty hard to retrain children to pay attention to "potty sensations' when they have become accustomed to ignoring them and don't even feel wet in diapers. Dispite what some parenting books and pediatricians say about not having muscle control ect. beginning the training as babies is far easier and they do get it and usually train by the time they are one. It is a bit of a pain having to take them to the toilet all the time and wash cloth diapers but it totally pays off and you save a fortune in diapers. The secret for me was carrying my daughter a great deal, that way I could pick up on the subtle clues that she was getting ready to go. She didn't poop her pants after 6 months and only occasionally wet her bed untill she was 1 and a half. No rewards, it was just as natural as brushing teeth before bed, it's just what you do. If anyone wants details I will gladly share my experience.

Rosa said...when my son was about 2 yrs. old and we saw that he was eady to be trained, we took one weekend to try and experiment.Someone had told me to just leave him naked in the house for the weekend. That when he felt like going for either #1 or #2 and since he didn't have the security of his diaper or pull-ups that he would find his way to the bathroom.Well... it worked! It would be quiet in the house and all of a sudden there was a blur of a naked boy running to the bathroom. But he was literally trained in that one weekend. GOOD LUCK TO ANY ONE WHO TRIES THIS... MAKE SURE TO HAVE A CAMERA FOR WHEN THEY DO THE "running man" lol

wvgirl said...My oldest daughter now 17 was attached to my hip, so therefore I couldnt go to the potty unless she was with me..lol But she was potty trained at 13months old, I would put diaper on her and even put them on backwards cause it didnt matter who was around when she needed to potty off came the diaper and she flew to her potty so I decided to put big girl panties on her, we never had a problem at all. Then I had my second daughter now 15, as soon as she started walking my oldest daughter would take her diaper off and take her to the potty she was trained at 14months old. So to you moms that have children that are around the same age let them help with the training it really works..
