Celebrity Potty Training Anecdotes
We ran a series of potty training questions past some of ParentDish's celebrity mommy friends, who were generous enough to share their experiences with us. So far, we have heard some of their best advice, as well as some specific tips and strategies. Now we move on to the inevitable silly potty stories!
ParentDish asked...Do you have any funny potty training anecdotes or horror stories you can share?
Chyler Leigh
Once my son (who's now 5), became aware that he had to poop at around 2 years old, he would hide and/or suddenly become very quiet. One day we had put him in his room for his nap and he decided that he no longer wanted to keep his dirty diaper on. Well, since he had been making noise and suddenly got quiet, I figured that he had either fallen asleep very quickly or was up to no good. My husband ran upstairs to check on him and then immediately yelled for me. Assuming the worst, I headed up. And sure enough, my son had taken his dirty diaper (and all that was inside of it) and smeared it all over the wall. Unfortunately for us, we had a short cut shag carpet that the remnants of poo easily burrowed into. That's when we knew that it was time to look into potty training.

My first daughter potty trained herself by 18 months (because of the cloth diapers -- I'm convinced). Our second daughter didn't get out of nighttime diapers until she was a little over 4, but as soon as she said to me she wanted to not wear a diaper to bed, we started letting her go and there have been many wet beds to deal with, but we have a great waterproof mattress cover (from Pottery Barn Kids) under the sheets. We still take her to the bathroom in the middle of the night when one of us gets up to go. It's pretty funny because she stays asleep when we put her on the potty -- we can plop her right back on the bed after and she never even notices. Now she rarely has an accident. When she does have an accident, we try to make light of it and tell her it's no big deal, but when there are dry sheets we always try to make sure and tell her how proud we are of her.

Brooke Burke
I potty trained my first daughter on an island, she was able to go in nature when she felt the sensation, so there were no accidents trying to make it to a restroom.

Too many to count. But I did end up cutting a hole in Mason's diaper to try to get him to go #2 on the potty, and when it fell out of his diaper, he ran around the bathroom, yelling and stepping in it. It was traumatic, but it worked.

Chocolate seems to work wonders! Ashby takes after her father and LOVES anything chocolate....M&Ms, chocolate chip cookies, etc. After she has a successful potty time, I sometimes give her a sweet surprise! Now she can't wait to go the the potty because she loves to get her M&M's after!

I would have my girls spend time sitting (on the potty) until the tinkle showed up. Then we would "pat, pat, pat, pat, put it in the potty" with the tissue.

Well with twins, when one has to go, it gives the other the idea that maybe THEY have to go too! In fact, one time I went into my twins' Max and Kate's room and smelled something suspicious. I looked in the toilet, looked around the room, but found nothing. Later that evening, when I still smelled the suspect odor, I asked the kids about it and found out that while one had been using the toilet, the other had to go so badly that he went number 2 in the trash can!!

I just put them on the toilet, told them they get to wear big kid undies and they did it. I had no problems with number 2 either. They both did it the same day they pottied. My girl never once wet the bed, but my son went a few weeks where it was a couple times a week, but I blame that on his father and I seperating, and us moving. My daughter is now nine and my son will be 4 next month and its not something we think about anymore. After reading these stories I should consider myself lucky :)

JoAn said...I potty trained all my children plus one grandaughter by the time they were 12 months old. If you sit them on the potty when you go as soon at they can sit up by themself it will work. But to the monsters and devils that isn't good. Just love and teach them not scare them.

Every parent has different styles of parenting whether you agree or not, it's what works for them. And, not to mention, it's still their right to parent how they want. As long as the child isn't being abused, and his/her needs are met, there's no reason for parents to go after one another just because you have a different parenting style. People need to put on their "big kid pants" and by all means, potty in the toilet!!!!

I started introducing them to the Potty as soon as they learned how to sit at the age of 6-7 months. I started putting them to the Potty as soon as they start walking at the age of 9 months. At 10 months, I started putting them to the Potty often, like after they wakes up, and every time they take a sip of any kind of drinks. And every time they go potty, I give them 1 M&M. They like the M&M so much that they actually go potty even if it just a drop, so that they can have M&M. As soon as they turned 1 year, they are done. I let them drink all they want by the time they wakes up in the morning, until dinner time at 6:00pm. Then put them to the Potty before they go to bed at 8:30 or 9:00pm, then wake them up to go Potty before I go to bed at 11:00 or 11:30pm. They actually just wake up enough to go Potty, right back to sleep. They wakes me up in the morning at around 6:00am because the want to go Potty. They wear Pull Up during the night just in case they have an accident in their sleep. But they never have any accident even at night. One thing about Potty training a Child, is we cannot afford to get too tired or lazy and let the child go just this one time. Because that one time, will lead to the next. Then the child will get confuse.

Mary said...I am a little sad to see the mothers on this board judge each other so harshly. We all try our best and do what we feel is in the best interest of our children. We all have different experiences, and different personalities and development levels to deal with (my 19 month old son is no where near ready to potty train, my sister's 6 year old daughter still has accidents), so let's give each other support and constructive criticism if you feel you have to say something.

joyce said...I have twins boy / girl and another son 1 year 13 days younger.
They all wore cloth (Tiny Tot) diapers. I took their bottles the day after their first birthday and potty trained them the day after their 2nd birthday. Worked great, my twin son was seriously potty trained #1 and #2 in one day. Twin girl did great but had accidents at night. We used training pants with rubber pants over them for night so we never had wet sheets. Younger son, did ok but took a little longer, he didn't like to stop playing to go potty but eventually learned in about 6 months he was totally trained. Tip: Once you take diapers off...Never put them back on...This is the secret to success. Trust me, I've seen it done all kinds of ways.. If you put them back on it is confusing to the child...try it!

They ran around in an oversize t-shirt or long dress but no pull-ups or panties and I placed a potty chair in the main room for easy access. They each were afraid to go on themselves and instead sat on the potty. It was quick and easy. They received lots of hugs and praise.

My nephew just wouldn't go on the pot for his mom and dad so one time when he was spending the night here I got him interested in a game of ring toss. This gave me an idea......I tossed some fruit loops in the toilet and challenged him to 'target practice'! It worked like a charm, made it fun for him and he has been using the toilet ever since!

Angela said...I helped out my parents with watching my younger nieces (now 10 and 8). My brother is the Captian of his Fire Department (when the kids were younger he voulenteered at two Fire Departments) and their Mom's job requires a lot of traveling usually 5 days a week. Anyway, when the older of the two was learning to potty train the younger one got jealous and wanted to learn also so it was preatty easy. Also, I would let them sit on the potty and let them read a books about going potty when they said they felt like they had to go. My Mom read in some magazine to use a "potty piggy" we got these large clear plastic piggy banks and wrote their names on them with a marker. Each time they even tried to go potty we would drop a penny, nickle, dime or quarter. It just depanded on the ammount of "pee pee or poo poo" they left in the potty. I know it sounds kind of weird but, after they were potty trained we took all the coins and they opened their 1st savings account at the local bank. It worked for us.

Annie said...you people are stupid, who cares how she made the kid use the pot. It's better than it crapping all over the house right?? And just let them poop on you now, after all the love, time and money you give them they'll eventually do it anyway. So happy I don't and will never have kids, what a waste of time and money. ha!

You have no right to be calling people stupid. Also, why are you reading these comments if you don't have or want kids???? Thank god you don't!!!!
BTW, A child is not a waste of time or money, they are one of the best tings to spend both on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Caroll said...Potty training, sure brings back fond (and not so fond memories). Our daughter used to hide behind a chair when doing #2, I'd say "what are you doing" and she'd reply in a very strained voice "Nothing". My sister when napping used to paint the crib and walls with #2, she was very neat - only used one hand and never took her diaper off. Can't tell you how many times we heard Mom say "you did it again you little poop head" and she would start scrubbing.
