Celebrity Potty Training Anecdotes
We ran a series of potty training questions past some of ParentDish's celebrity mommy friends, who were generous enough to share their experiences with us. So far, we have heard some of their best advice, as well as some specific tips and strategies. Now we move on to the inevitable silly potty stories!
ParentDish asked...Do you have any funny potty training anecdotes or horror stories you can share?
Chyler Leigh
Once my son (who's now 5), became aware that he had to poop at around 2 years old, he would hide and/or suddenly become very quiet. One day we had put him in his room for his nap and he decided that he no longer wanted to keep his dirty diaper on. Well, since he had been making noise and suddenly got quiet, I figured that he had either fallen asleep very quickly or was up to no good. My husband ran upstairs to check on him and then immediately yelled for me. Assuming the worst, I headed up. And sure enough, my son had taken his dirty diaper (and all that was inside of it) and smeared it all over the wall. Unfortunately for us, we had a short cut shag carpet that the remnants of poo easily burrowed into. That's when we knew that it was time to look into potty training.

My first daughter potty trained herself by 18 months (because of the cloth diapers -- I'm convinced). Our second daughter didn't get out of nighttime diapers until she was a little over 4, but as soon as she said to me she wanted to not wear a diaper to bed, we started letting her go and there have been many wet beds to deal with, but we have a great waterproof mattress cover (from Pottery Barn Kids) under the sheets. We still take her to the bathroom in the middle of the night when one of us gets up to go. It's pretty funny because she stays asleep when we put her on the potty -- we can plop her right back on the bed after and she never even notices. Now she rarely has an accident. When she does have an accident, we try to make light of it and tell her it's no big deal, but when there are dry sheets we always try to make sure and tell her how proud we are of her.

Brooke Burke
I potty trained my first daughter on an island, she was able to go in nature when she felt the sensation, so there were no accidents trying to make it to a restroom.

Too many to count. But I did end up cutting a hole in Mason's diaper to try to get him to go #2 on the potty, and when it fell out of his diaper, he ran around the bathroom, yelling and stepping in it. It was traumatic, but it worked.

Chocolate seems to work wonders! Ashby takes after her father and LOVES anything chocolate....M&Ms, chocolate chip cookies, etc. After she has a successful potty time, I sometimes give her a sweet surprise! Now she can't wait to go the the potty because she loves to get her M&M's after!

I would have my girls spend time sitting (on the potty) until the tinkle showed up. Then we would "pat, pat, pat, pat, put it in the potty" with the tissue.

Well with twins, when one has to go, it gives the other the idea that maybe THEY have to go too! In fact, one time I went into my twins' Max and Kate's room and smelled something suspicious. I looked in the toilet, looked around the room, but found nothing. Later that evening, when I still smelled the suspect odor, I asked the kids about it and found out that while one had been using the toilet, the other had to go so badly that he went number 2 in the trash can!!

Kim said...I have 10 kids. Only actively "potty trained" one. Swore I would NEVER do it again. The rest just did it on their own time. It was wonderful. They were all done by their third birthday, some by around two and a half, but when they were done, they were dry all day AND all night. No pressure. I remember thinking I would be pretty Pi**ed off if some one made me try to go when I didn't have to. Used that idea and it worked. None of THEM need therapy.

Helen said...I had to watch my granddaughter when my daughter was working and it came to the time that she should be potty trained. She wasn't quite 2 years old yet, but I decided I was tired of changing diapers. I told her that if she started going to the potty, I would take her to the store and we would pick out some pretty panties for her to wear but she had to use the potty all the time because if she peed her new panties it would go right through them. She was trained in a matter of two days.

Michelle said...I took a special trip to the store for special big kig underwear or big girl panties that my son or daughter got to pick out. My son picked batman and glow in the dark johnny qwest and my daughter picked out barbie. I made it a big deal and we went to lunch and then home. Both kids were potty trained at a reasonable time. I did not stress out about it and made sure to tell interferring inlaws to back off. It was between my children, me and thier dad. Having special big kid underwear made it so they did not want to get them dirty...so they went to the potty. It also gave them a sense of control over themselves. It worked great! Nobody cried or threw tantrums. :o)

Jackiembelle said...You have to wait until your child can hold their pee for at least 2 hours. Take your child into the bathroom and let them flush the toilet so they won't be scared of it. Put the child into training pants and if they pee or poop in them just take them into the bathroom and let them try and clean themselves up with you encouraging them. Tell them the toilet is where mommy, daddy etc. (use everyone the child knows) goes. Children don't realize that it is a pain to clean them up especially poop. If they have to clean themselves up they will soon tire of this. Especially if they have to take a bath afterward. My kids were trained in one day. I trained my friend's child also in one day. They want to please you. If they think you don't care about having to clean their butt they'll continue to mess themselves. Please don't ever ever shame your child! This is a helping them technique. It is a parent's job afterall to "help" their kids become a self sufficient adult. This is our goal. When your child feels close to you and doesn't feel judged they are more apt to learn quicker. Kindness and patience is how kids learn.
I was a bed wetter and my mother threatened to rub my nose in it! I was terrified of falling asleep! I actually used to pinch myself when I sat on the toilet to make sure I was awake! Then I would dream about sitting on the toilet pinching myself! Of course I wet the bed and she continued to threaten me! I loved my mom but she certainly was an ignorant parent sometimes. She taught me to be completely the opposite with my kids. The library has a plethora of information for child care. Child psychology books can be very helpful.

One Sunday I came home from work and found my daughter on her potty chair accross from my husband on the toilet ...both reading the Sunday newspaper.
What a funny site. I should have gotten a photo.

Supermanxix said...I have always heard Girls are easier to potty train than boys, but My daughter (now 8) took until almost 4, while my son (3) was potty trained before 2. Night time accidents for him can be counted on one hand, whereas the girl still has one now and then. What did we tell him? "It makes Mommy and Daddy sad when you go potty in your pants. Will you make us happy and go in the potty?" His answer was yes, and true to his word, 3 days later was the last day he wore diapers during daytime.

Chris said...I think the attic monster is a great idea. My son is 2 1/2 and starting to get the hang of it. To those who say that some of these techniques are "cruel" or that they are going to teach our kids to be psychotic, you're the reason our generation is so weak and feeble minded.

Marie said...Melissa, you were not cruel to your five year old to allow him to wear wet clothes and miss a playdate. It was a consequence of something of which he had complete control, as discovered later in the day.

Marie said...Decsunflower, I believe that one always needs backup clothing for little ones. After all, many potty trained youngsters have occasional accidents, or get and upset stomach, and can't make it to the bathroom. It's not bad advice, but should not be set in stone.

Deb said...I agree that part of potty training is to wipe themselves and to wash their hands! I have 3 boys 2 of them are adults and 1 a teen, all 3 of them were trained 100% by the age of 2! I am a firm believer that cloth underwear is the key! NO PULL-UP'S used! I also have 2 Grand Daughters one 3 and one will be 2 I had my older one almost 100% trained while she was here on Vacation, but as soon as she went home to her mom she put her in pull-up's and now all my work and teaching went out the window! she wears the pull-up's goes to the bathroom in them and tells me she needs a new one,but still wants to play the wash up bubble game, that we play to teach proper personal cleaning need for good bathroom habits!
Thank you in advance for reading my opinion! Have a Wonderful day!

Jen said...My son was 3 yrs & 3 months. He was a very tall child and changing his diaper felt ridiculous. I am so glad that I never used scare tactics or candy for a reward. Especially after watching a relative tell her son that the Puma's gonna get him, as she screamed at him to go potty, then giving him soda as a reward. It took him longer than my son to be trained. I am thankful that I did it my way, and now that we've learned that he has a type of Autisim, I'm even happier with myself for letting him decide. Now he's 7 and very much in control. Children know when they're ready.

mommytobe said...When I was growing up I always had to help with my younger brothers So I know all about the potty training days!
I decided to buy a poster board and draw out a sort of path like a board game, similar to Candy Land. Then at the end of the path there was a prize, such as a small toy they really wanted. Each time he went to the potty he was rewarded with a sticker and able to put it on one of the path squares. On some of the squares I put different rewards, such as, if he went 20 times to the potty he would get to go get an icecream cone with mommy! This is a fun way to get your kids modivated and they always love putting the stickers up and coming to check out how far they have progressed!
It worked really well with my brother and he never had any accidents and was always eager to go potty to earn those stickers! :]

Jackie said...Age does not matter. Parents have a lot to learn about kids. They dont and wont be ready to potty train just because you are ready. They arent potty trained because you sat them on the toilet every 1 1/2 hours or because you gave them candy. It's their bladder sphincter that is or isn't matured. Every child is going to be potty trained at different ages. It doesn't matter if you child isn't potty trained at 3 yrs old and your neighbor's child is ready at 14 months. It doesn't make anyone better than anyone else and children should not be made to feel like they did something wrong if they had an accident day or night! They shouldnt be told horrible things to make them go to the bathroom. Becoming potty trained is something that is supposed to be celebrated because they are gaining control over their own body. They shouldnt be scared to wet their pants like its an abnormal thing because it isnt. THEIR BLADDER SPHINCTER isnt matured yet and that's okay! Society has it backwards!

Toni said...My youngest is 2 1/2 and I was worried that he wasn't going to potty train well. He showed no interest in it. Until one week I was off of work for four days and decided we're gonna try this. I put his underwear on him when he woke up that morning and took him often and he did have some accidents too but whenever he did go I praised him with, "I so proud of you!" and "Your such a big boy!" and clapped and basically acted liked he just won a major race! I probably looked liked a nut to someone if they had seen me. But it worked! He is doing so great. The pooh, thing did take another week or so before he got that down, but I did the exact same reaction and it worked too. I did not use candy or rewards, just praise and to let him know that I was so proud of him! Because I am.
