Mom Gives Birth in Her Pants
One surprised mom found a baby in her pants leg. Image: Corbis.
23-year-old Katherine Allen isn't exactly new at this baby birthing business. Already the mother of two sons, she felt pretty confident that she knew what she was doing when she went into labor on May 9. When her contractions first began, she called the hospital and was told to wait until they were seven and a half minutes apart before coming in. Considering the fact that her two previous labors had lasted up to twelve hours, this seemed reasonable to her.
I guess it didn't seem so reasonable to her soon-to-be-born daughter, who decided that right this very minute worked better for her. "I got to the bottom of the stairs and I just felt this massive urge to push when all of a sudden my waters broke all over the hallway carpet," says Allen.
In an instant, her partner, Alan Moore, reacted to what appeared to be lump traveling down the leg of Katherine's gray sweat pants. "I was watching Katherine about to start climbing the stairs when all of a sudden she started screaming saying the baby was coming. I couldn't believe my eyes when it appeared and rolled down her leg -- I was just thinking I can't let it hit the floor and dived to catch it."

He sprang into action and scooped up 8 pound, 5 ounce Hannah just as she slid out of the bottom of Katherine's pants. Umbilical cord still attached and running up her leg, a shocked Katherine sat patiently on the stairs holding her new daughter until an ambulance arrived.
While dad cut the umbilical cord, paramedics and a midwife checked out mom and baby and found them both to be perfectly healthy. They didn't even have to go to the hospital!
Dad, of course, is thrilled about his experience assisting in the birth of his daughter. '"I feel like I have done more in a few hours with my daughter than some dads manage in the first few months -- it's exhausting but fantastic."
As for mom, she thinks gravity just might be the secret to easy childbirth. "My other births definitely weren't this easy and I will always recommend standing up to do it in future," she says.

Jenn said...Congratulations to mom, dad, and all three kids! All of my labors have been relatively easy and short, and the quicker they go, the scarier it can be. I'd prefer those quick labors any day, though.
To the simple minds on here, do you feel better now that you have made a demeaning comment towards a complete stranger via internet post? I want your life, as it must be so stimulating that your joy is derived from that. My mother-in-law had her fourth child at the age of 24, was divorced before he was born, and raised all 4 on her own. No child support, no welfare of any kind. Sometimes, single parenting is necessary and effective. Then you have people like my sister, who has 4 children by 4 different men. She was married to two of them, and the fourth left her a month before the wedding. She collects massive amounts of child support, state insurance for the kids, and collects new men like attics collect dust. So tell me, how effective is being a married parent again?

SystymsGirl said...You have no idea the history of this couple. It's funny how most of you people get on here and start shooting off at the mouth about things you think you know about. Get off your high horses and put yourself in someone else' shoes for once. Maybe you're right and they're irresponsible baby makers, but maybe you're wrong and they are loaded. Marriage is such an overrated institution any more. Hardly any one takes it seriously.

Michelle said...Since when does a woman have to be married to have children? I'm really interested in understanding where that mentality comes from. Does it say this in the bible? A marriage license is issued by the state and is a legal contract between two people. Religion has nothing to do with marriage unless a couple decide to perform the ceremony in a church. So where does this notion come from?
We can all agree that there are plenty of married couples that are crappy parents, and certainly there are unmarried couples or singles that are great parents.
I've been married for 16 years, yet still acknowledge that marriage is a choice and not a pre-requisite for having children.

Sharon said...I completely agree with you. That is one of the downfalls of the US. Isn't odd that people who think having babies out of wedlock is ok only look to "human standards" and not to the Lord's standards. He was the one who said no fornication or adultery - meaning - no sex outside marriage, hence, children are supposed to be born in wedlock with two parents.

margie said...Even though she said "her partner" it doesn't mean that this man wasn't living with her at the time. So what if she isn't married? As long as she is taking care of her children she's going to be fine. In this day and age some women would rather just have children without being married. Sure it does break Biblical rules but most of the men in our world today are really not worth giving the time of day to. Thank God I have a loving and caring husband.

There are married fathers out there all over the place that were not even there when their babies were born and do not do as much as most partners do for their children. Give it a rest people. What makes u so much better than this 23 yr old woman? I was married to my kids father and he was never around for his kids...either working or drinking!.

Irresponsible? So because she's not married and has kids that makes her irresponsible? Thats crap. I am 22, have 2 DISABLED children from 2 different dads and get no support from either of them. I'd say thats responsibility. Who are you to judge? You must be older....not everyone needs 2 parents to suceed.
====You are 22 with 2 kids from 2 different fathers and you'd say that's responsibilty???? Maybe you'd be more responsible by keeping your legs shut. And no, I'm not an older person.
