Summer Movie Baby Name Preview

Categories: Baby Names

This year's summer movie season kicked off with a baby naming bang. In the opening sequence of "Star Trek," a heroic Starfleet officer struggles to save his crew, all the while negotiating baby names with his mid-labor wife:

"Tiberius? You kidding me? No...that's the worst! Let's name him after your dad. Let's call him Jim."

What better introduction to the names of summer? If Tiberius (or Jim) isn't up your alley, here's a glimpse ahead at some of the names most likely to get a boost from Hollywood's blockbuster season. Remember, it's not about the size of the movie, or even the size of the role. It's about the perfect meeting of role, name, and style.

Sylvia: "Weather Girl" (7/10)
You may not notice this film on other summer-movie lists. "Weather Girl" is an indie romantic comedy, and its budget could fit into one of "Star Trek's" escape pods. But the action centers on an attractive, lovelorn Sylvia, and that could spell baby-naming gold. Parents are ready to notice this name again after a generation of neglect.

Esther: "Orphan" (7/24)
Never bet against an evil child. Names like Damien, Regan and Gage first hit the big time after appearing as demonic spawn in Hollywood films. In "Orphan" the beneficiary is Esther, a sweet, gentle name that's about to acquire a wicked edge.

Henry and Clare: "The Time Traveler's Wife" (8/14)
The popular novel, a bittersweet time-travel romance, comes to the screen. Its protagonists are Henry and Clare, two names already popular with the kind of folks who made the novel a hit.

Ryden: "Post Grad" (8/14)
A jobless college grad has to move home with her wacky family as she tries to sort out her new life. Whatever. The point is, she's named Ryden. A modern mashup name, Ryden is Rylie-meets-Hayden, or Ryder-meets-Jaden. The name could hit bigger than the movie.
