Does Brooke Greenberg hold the key to the fountain of youth? Image: Dez Pain/sxc.hu
Since her birth, Brooke's body and brain have not aged in the conventional sense. She remains the size of an infant and has the mental capacity of a toddler. Her bone age is estimated to be about 10 years old and she has a mouth full of baby teeth. She rides in a stroller and, because her esophagus is so small, must be fed through a tube.
"There've been very minimal changes in Brooke's brain," says Dr. Richard Walker of the University of South Florida College of Medicine. "Various parts of her body, rather than all being at the same stage, seem to be disconnected."
Experts have been unable to diagnose Brooke with any known genetic syndrome and have yet to discover a chromosomal abnormality that would explain her condition.
But for all the mystery that surrounds Brooke, there are also a few miracles. She has survived several serious health crises in her young life, including a near-fatal brain tumor that suddenly and without explanation disappeared on its own.
Scientists believe that somewhere in Brooke's genetic makeup may lie the answer to the eternal question of why we age and, perhaps, how to slow that process. "Without being sensational, I'd say this is an opportunity for us to answer the question, why we're mortal, or at least to test it," Walker says. "And if we're wrong, we can discard it. But if we're right, we've got the golden ring."
"Brooke is the nucleus of our family," says her father, Howard Greenberg. What if Brooke holds the secret to aging? "We'd like to find out. We'd like to help people. Everybody's here for a reason. Maybe this is why Brooke is here."

I agree with Kristy....this is not the fountain of youth that everyone talks about. There is a reason why this girl isn't aging, and do you really think this what her parents wanted for her? She's 16 years old and she has the mental capacity of a TODDLER....my 3 year old is probably ahead of her....I hardly think this the life her parents wanted for her. God bless, Greenberg Family, may you live each day to the fullest with your beautiful daughter.

I don't believe that religion can explain this and I also think that there is alot that we do not not know. I think we need to quit looking for God outside of ourselves if God is Life then God is not seperate from us.

Hi I had a sister that was diagnosed as suffering from spinal menengitisat the age of 2 she was 17 years old when she passed away and was the size of a two year old the only part of her that kept growing was her hair and her finger nails. She never learned to speak and she moved around by holding on to things. My parents could not ake her out in public because of the crowds that wanted to see her they also had to take her out of a hospital that was studying her condition because she could not feed her self and no one in the hospital would take the time to feed her I hope no one has to go thry what she must of gone thru and not be able to tell any one and I poor parents could never go out tother because one of them always had to be there for her

Is what you are saying true? I looked up Spinal menegitis. It has nothing to do with lack of growth. Do you mind sending me a picture of your sister who died?
