Pregnant By Swimming?

The pool can be a dangerous place: Kids can get sunburned or slip on the wet deck. But can the pool get you pregnant?

Magdalena Kwiatkowska of Poland thinks you can. She is suing an Egyptian hotel because she claims her 13-year-old daughter became impregnated after swimming in its pool during their recent holiday. Ms.Kwiatkowska says that there must have been errant sperm floating around just waiting to implant themselves in an unsuspecting female taking a dip. She swears that her daughter did not meet any boys during their vacation, so the mysterious sperm in the pool had to be the culprit.

Surely this lawsuit will be thrown out of court on inconceivable (pun intended) grounds. First off, wouldn't the chlorine kill any random sperm? But even further, did Ms. Kwiatkowska follow every moment of her vacationing daughter to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that she spent absolutely no time with anyone of the opposite sex during their Egyptian holiday?

The only reassuring thing about this story, perhaps, is that frivolous lawsuits are not exclusively an American thing.

sounds like mom is a bit stupid. I guess her daughter told her she'd never had sex and is still a virgin. SO of course mom believes her.

As someone else mentioned, it is possible to get pregnant without actual penetration, but I'm pretty sure that the sperm has to be in pretty close proximity to the vagina! I know they can swim, but in a pool? I don't think so!

It can happen in a bathtub if the conditions are just right but not in a heavily chlorinated swimming pool. It's amazing how many parents will accept such bizarre explanations because they believe their "little angel" can do no wrong,

The 13 year old HO had sex period. There is no way possible that sperm can pass through her bathing suit and travel up her virgina. Her mother is in denial she refuse to believe her 13 year old is sexual active. In this day and age 13 year olds sleep with more men than there is sand on the beach. When I was growing up things were different you had sex AFTER you got married. Someone should sue the mother for been so stupid.

Where do you get off calling a 13 year old girl a "HO"? Are you stupid or just completely ignoring the fact that this child could be a victim of incest from a male relative or a rape victim who is too afraid to tell. Think THAT doesn't happen? Let's see, the case in Ireland of the 12 year old incest victim who wanted an abortion; the nutcase in Austria raping his daughter and holding her captive - 8 kids, wan't it?; the case in Missouri of the father raping his daughter and killing two of the babies he made her have - 6 kids there? Watch the news once in awhile. You people really need to take lessons in humanity. The mother may be stupid, but don't pillory the child because you also have no common sense. No, she should not be suing the hotel, YES they should be looking into WHO got her 13 year old CHILD pregnant.

And to think that s-o-o-o many women spend thousands of dollars at fertility clinics to conceive when all along they could have gotten pregnant for free in a swimming pool. Who knew???

The mother's claim is completely ridiculous. First, the chlorine would in fact kill any sperm that would enter the pool. Second, sperm die off after a certain amount of time after being unable to find an egg, also there is a sheet of tissue in a woman's vagina, so unless that is penetrated, sperm is unable to get to a woman's egg. As well, a pool's temperature is too cold for sperm, so if for some reason the chlorine didn't kill them that would. Obviously this mother doesn't know anything about sexual education.

Ali - Do you have any idea just how much of your post - while good intentioned - is inaccurate?
You would benefit by getting the facts straight before you post otherwise your ultimate point - that getting pregnant from swimming is inconceivable, in which you are absolutely correct - gets lost in the half-baked "facts" you cite.

You got that right and I am sure the doctor can tell if she is still a virgin or not. Of course we know she isn't one.
