At the Movies
Don't let the rating fool you: "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is even more intense than the previous two Harry Potter movies, which were both rated PG-13. The Hogwarts students have matured and behave like the teens they are with lots of flirting and kissing and a general preoccupation with the opposite sex. While the movie is often dark and emotional, the message of good besting evil still prevails. Rated PG, OK for Kids 12+

On DVD
haunting in connecticutThe "Haunting in Connecticut" is disturbing, scary and far too violent for young kids. Based on a "true" story, the film is a haunted house tale that borrows liberally from other classic horror films. Despite being well-acted and often truly frightening, the film offers little beyond a reminder that bad things sometimes happen to good people. Rated PG-13, Iffy for Kids 14-16

TV
Set in Hollywood, "The Assistants" is a comedy about four young producer's assistants hoping to make it big in the entertainment industry. Aimed at teens, the show features backstabbing co-workers, impossible bosses and only one character with a strong sense of right and wrong. Rated TV-PG, OK for Kids 13+

Books
"The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" is a well-written saga of a young English girl making her way across the ocean to join her family in America. On the way, she finds herself caught up in the mysterious happenings aboard the ship and ultimately must defend herself against murder charges. An exciting read with a built-in history lesson, it will hook even the most reluctant reader. OK for Kids 9+

Music
Hannah Montana vol 3"Hannah Montana: Vol. 3" features songs from the popular Disney show about a typical teen with a secret rock star life. Mostly steering clear of relationship themes, the songs are feel-good party tunes with a message about true happiness and where it might be found. OK for Kids 8+

Games
For the Nintendo DS, "Treasure World" is an easy to play digital treasure hunting game that encourages kids to get outside. By exploring their neighborhoods, players collect items for their alien characters and amass stars with which to buy extras like clothing and dance moves. With an optional online trading component, it's a unique and fun way to combine gaming with outdoor play. Rated E, OK for Kids 10+

Web
PandandaThe latest addition to the virtual world arena, "Pandanda" is a safe and fun place for grade-schoolers to hang out. Well, it's fun until the beta period expires and all points and items earned are erased and players are urged to sign up for an "elite" membership. OK for Ages 8+
