In fact, the outcry was so strong that Warner Brothers removed one particularly hurtful line from the movie's trailer: "It must be hard to love an adopted child as much as your own."
Katie Page Sander, Domestic Adoption Programs Coordinator for Hands Across the Water in Ann Arbor, MI, tells ParentDish that the damaging language isn't just limited to ticket buyers. "Orphan is kind of a loaded word," says Sander. It has "negative connotations."
Sander worries that the movie will enforce false stereotypes about adopted children, an issue she confronts every day.
As Melissa Fay Greene points out at The Daily Beast, the movie -- just like those myths -- has no basis in reality.
"The trailer gives the impression that any couple with a yen for 'a replacement child' (as this psychologically unhealthy practice is known) can stroll into an orphanage, pick one out, and take her home," writes Greene. Greene, who is herself an adoptive parent, is incensed by this portrayal: "Even civic groups who want to 'Adopt a Highway' fill out a few forms first."
But as we learned from the movie "Jaws," it only takes a myth to scare people out of the water, and, in this case, away from adopting the world's most vulnerable kids.
"Esther's shadowy past includes Eastern Europe," writes Greene. "She appears normal and sweet, but quickly turns violent and cruel, especially toward her mother. These are clichés. This is the baggage with which we saddle abandoned, orphaned, or disabled children given a fresh start at family life."
Adoptive parents aren't just rallying against ignorant stereotypes, they're using it as a platform to educate others about older-child adoption. And in the meantime, parents of adoptive children will surely get questions from their kids about "Orphan."
"It just has to be part of an ongoing dialogue you have with your child about adoption," says Sander. "The movie shouldn't be a catalyst for a new discussion, rather just a continuation of a discussion about 'isms.' People have all sorts of prejudices and adoption is no exception. Things will come up and you will have to continually discuss adoption and related issues with your child."
Will you go see "Orphan?" Do you think that it's damaging to the adoption cause? O,r do you think it's just another horror flick, meant to be merely entertainment and nothing more?

We went as a troop to see Little Orphan Annie and part way through the movie one of the little girls in foster care burst into tears and sobbed. These movies can be very hurtful even the well intentioned ones. I sometimes wonder whatever became of that child.

Lexie said...As a twin who lost her brother in the womb, the trailer for "The Unborn" made me burst into tears. I don't want to think about being haunted by my brother, but that's exactly what came to my mind and upset me so greatly. However, I'm also a writer, and I know that any topic can be transformed into a STORY. So even though I haven't seen the movie and have no plans to, I'm not going to criticize other people for wanting to do so (my mother is one of those people, ironically). If the subject matter offends you, don't view it.
I was also the left-handed one. So I must be evil.
Besides that, I'm also from the South, Appalachia to be precise. If we got up in arms about every movie, tv show, or 20/20 special that depicts us as gap-toothed, imbred, alcoholic, overall-wearing, uneducated hicks, we'd do nothing but whine and moan about how all these mediums are doing nothing but perpetuating the stereotype that everyone from the South is such. I'm not, and yes, I get angry, but I know that A) my complaining is not going to stop said movie, tv show, or 20/20 special from being viewed, and B) I have to remind myself that EVERYONE is fair game for something like this. Has anyone seen Deliverance, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, or the last Friday the 13th movie where the ONLY character with a southern accent (besides being totally out of place in a non-southern area) was a gap-toothed, overall-all wearing idiot? Really. Everyone falls prey to this at some point. It's only fiction. Fiction only hurts us if we let it.

Brenda Cartwright said...I was an "Orphan" as was my brother and two sisters. We lived in horror of those that were our guardians. That's who to be afraid of. We were dubbed "wards of the court" and the courts lert us down. We excperienced abuse of every kind. From sexual to mental. Every time the courts would send someone to see if we were being cared for., we were coached as to what to say. We were placed with relatives and they took advantage of every oppourtunity to turn us into their sex toys and housekeepers. So believe me the kids are not the ones to fear. It is the ones doing the adoption. They recieved money from the Social Security and the VA. and we never seen a dime of it spent on us. I wish there was something we could do to fix it but the damage is done and can not be undone.

First off, it is no joke that SOME adoptive parents of children from other countries have found that they. shall we say, were not given all the facts . Remember the shock of the Romanian orphanages? and the Russian kids who had fetal alcohol damage? Will your kid be the spawn of satan? Unlikely. Could they have developmental or emotional issues from early life in questionable circumstances? Yeah. Go into it with your eyes open. Its not like the 50's and 60's when there were maternity homes for girls who got "into trouble".

BelleSomnium said...I believe that adoption is a great thing! However, I just finished reading this non-fiction book called 'Good Kids Who Kill.' Most of the children in it who as teenagers killed their parents or families were adopted as babies. Weird! I always believed in nurture over nature but after reading this book I'm not so sure. People have to be careful about adoption. A lot of kids are severely neglected or worse as babies and it leaves a profound mark on their personality. As far as the movie goes, it's a horror movie, everyone knows that it's just a fake story. Horror movies cover subjects such as serial killers, psychopaths, zombies, etc. It's just a movie and it should be dismissed as so.

But nontheless showing its not orphaned kids you need to worry about, but evil sociopathic dwarves....apparently thats the REAL problem plaguing society!
