'Orphan' Angers Adoptive Parents

In fact, the outcry was so strong that Warner Brothers removed one particularly hurtful line from the movie's trailer: "It must be hard to love an adopted child as much as your own."
Katie Page Sander, Domestic Adoption Programs Coordinator for Hands Across the Water in Ann Arbor, MI, tells ParentDish that the damaging language isn't just limited to ticket buyers. "Orphan is kind of a loaded word," says Sander. It has "negative connotations."
Sander worries that the movie will enforce false stereotypes about adopted children, an issue she confronts every day.
As Melissa Fay Greene points out at The Daily Beast, the movie -- just like those myths -- has no basis in reality.
"The trailer gives the impression that any couple with a yen for 'a replacement child' (as this psychologically unhealthy practice is known) can stroll into an orphanage, pick one out, and take her home," writes Greene. Greene, who is herself an adoptive parent, is incensed by this portrayal: "Even civic groups who want to 'Adopt a Highway' fill out a few forms first."
But as we learned from the movie "Jaws," it only takes a myth to scare people out of the water, and, in this case, away from adopting the world's most vulnerable kids.
"Esther's shadowy past includes Eastern Europe," writes Greene. "She appears normal and sweet, but quickly turns violent and cruel, especially toward her mother. These are clichés. This is the baggage with which we saddle abandoned, orphaned, or disabled children given a fresh start at family life."
Adoptive parents aren't just rallying against ignorant stereotypes, they're using it as a platform to educate others about older-child adoption. And in the meantime, parents of adoptive children will surely get questions from their kids about "Orphan."
"It just has to be part of an ongoing dialogue you have with your child about adoption," says Sander. "The movie shouldn't be a catalyst for a new discussion, rather just a continuation of a discussion about 'isms.' People have all sorts of prejudices and adoption is no exception. Things will come up and you will have to continually discuss adoption and related issues with your child."
Will you go see "Orphan?" Do you think that it's damaging to the adoption cause? O,r do you think it's just another horror flick, meant to be merely entertainment and nothing more?

Lori said...As the mother of 2 adopted children, I am not offended at all by this movie. What about all the rated-G Disney movies with evil step-mothers? Should we be offended by them? Frankly, if I wanted to be offended by Hollywood, it would be about all the negative connotations surrounding people with bi-polar disorder and/or OCD. I have both and have never committed a crime, hurt anyone, or gone postal. . .wait a minute, are postal carriers offended by that phrase? Get a grip. Soon we won't be able to utter a word without being sued. Google KLBJ and Austin TX for the latest "scandal" involving a harmless word!

It's rated "R" and will not be seen by small children if their parents have any sense. Adopted children should know that they are loved just as much as any biological children by their parents. I never had to question it and a line in a fictional movie certainly does not offend me.

Any adult who watches this movie and subsequently leaves with an entire different perspective on adoption should lock themselves in their home and never grace the intelligent public with their lack of common sense.
Come on people! It's a movie for crying out loud! Get the eff over it and move on to something that matters, like REALITY!!!

sara said...WOW..Film is a representation of art. Its imagination..fantasy..Its putting ideas on a screen to entertain. not educate. Anyone who believes that movies are a representation of reality are sorely mistake and their ignorance is to blame. Yes this movie may be based on the stereotypes and fears of many ignorant individuals who dont have the heart or nobility to consider adopting a child as being the most courageous and honorable duty a person could fulfill but people who are so dumb as to believe that an adopted child is going to turn "evil" will never consider adoption even with out this films production. Ever see The Good Son? To force an artist to change their vision due to your own fears is pathetic.

A Mom said...OMG!! It's just a movie!!! Other movies have been made with this storyline since the 70's. Get real. Besides, I have heard real life horror stories about adopting kids only to find out they had severe emotional problems (parents weren't told or whatever) such as Reactive Detachment Disorder. I read a story where one woman wanted to un-adopt her son because he was so violent, she was afraid he would hurt her younger, biological son. These stories are real, the movie is just a friggin movie.
