The Bebé Glotón, the breast-feeding doll, which translates from Spanish to mean Glutton Baby, comes with a snazzy halter top - adorned with daisies for nipples - that little girls wear while they pretend to breast-feed. According to thingamababy.com, the doll makes suckling noises when lifted to the daisies.

Of course, there are benefits to both dolls. Anything that encourages breast-feeding and empowers young girls to embrace the natural side of womanhood is a good thing. And Stuart Campbell, M.D., a pioneer on the use of diagnostic ultrasounds in the 1980s, told the Timesonline.co.uk that he is eager to use the plaster fetus dolls to help expectant parents deal with problems that may arise during pregnancy.
We can't help but rue the loss of imagination, when a doll could be a princess or a pirate (or both) and pregnancy was miraculous, precisely because we didn't really know what was happening in that big belly.
And what exactly are you supposed to do with those plaster fetus dolls once the baby arrives?
Just askin'.

Hannah said...I don't even want kids, and I think the fetus dolls are sweet. I think the breastfeeding doll is creepy, as to me, the thought of thinking about little girls' breasts is disturbing, and I wouldn't offer a hypothetical daughter one, but if she wanted it, I wouldn't deny it. How is it losing imagination? It's not like they won't still play with the doll like they would any other. Sheesh, people are so judgmental.

They are to lazy to be parents and want the easy way out by having these type of (toys do the job for them). All the parents seem to want is to keep up with the Jones. This is why the family unit died when people voted for stores being open on Sundays. No time for each other. This country now is all about greed.

Now with my third child, my son is constantly asking me questions regarding how I feed the baby. I think by them seeing it makes it natural and no big deal.
As for the plaster fetus, it looks like a King Cake baby to me. At least, that was my first impression when I saw the picture. Like the 3d/4d ultrasounds, I can take it or leave it. Since I had a ton of ultrasounds this past pregnancy, my dr just gave me 3d pics whenever the baby was in a good position. If she didn't do it, I wouldn't have gone out of my way to get one.

Erin said...Wow, I was really surprised so many people voted that they thought the breastfeeding doll was gross. Babies in my house rarely drink from bottles and don't use pacifiers--I would love to buy a doll that 1) does not come with those items and 2) actually acknowledges that breastfeeding is the normal way to feed a baby. My two year old daughter even understands that--she would lift up her shirt if I said her little brother was hungry! I had to keep telling her she didn't have any milk. But she is free to pretend to nurse her dolls!

If I had one of my baby at 12 weeks, I would lose interest in it at 13 weeks when it's no longer accurate. On the other hand, I think it would be a great idea for clinics to have a set of these, not of a specific child, but just of fetal size in general at each week of pregnancy. It would be exciting and fun, especially in the first few months when the baby is so small. However, I personally would have no desire to keep the replicas.
Regarding the nursing dolls: Breastfeeding is marvelous, healthful, and not something to be ashamed of at all as it is the natural way to feed a baby. I see no problem with kids pretending to breastfeed - it's a good thing that they are unaware of the sexual element, and to them it's no different than feeding a dolly with a bottle. With that said, this doll still struck me the wrong way. Maybe it's the fake daisy nipples. Or maybe it's the fact that, while young children wouldn't sexualize this product, older children or adults may, and the younger child would pick up on it. Or what if the girl really liked the nipple shirt and started trying to wear if out of the house without the doll? Out of context, it does look sexually explicit. I have a 5-month old who is currently breastfeeding, and a curious 4-year-old boy who pretended to breastfeed his stuffed animals a few times when his brother first arrived. I had no problem with it, didn't make a big deal over it, and the phase was over a week or two later. Just a part of becoming a big sibling like putting kleenex diapers on dolls. I still don't think I would buy this doll, though. I think it's completely natural if the child brings it up themselves in play, but it seems to be one of those things where the imagination is perfectly sufficient - the real nipples are a little much.

velcromom said...I don't see a problem with this doll. I am stunned that seventy percent of respondents found it "gross". What's gross about it? We need more nursing mamas, so if this helps kids understand that breastfeeding is the normal way to feed babies, I'm all for it. There isn't anything gross about breastfeeding. Toddlers and young children pretend to nurse their babies anyway, if they are fortunate enough to have seen it with their younger sibs or relatives.
It's kind of funny that they included a weird tank with goofy flower nipples. Normally kids just lift their shirt to pretend to feed their baby dolls, because they are smart enough to know mama's milk comes from nipples, not special shirts with flowers on the front!!

Allison said...I'm pretty sure that these dolls aren't aimed at young mothers - it's usually 4-8 year old girls who play with dolls. Do we really need to encourage kids that young to make babies? If it was meant to be a teaching activity, it wouldn't be marketed to little kids! I'm all for mother's breastfeeding their children, but I don't think it's at all appropriate to teach CHILDREN how to breastfeed! Anyone who doesn't find this disturbing has serious issues!

I SAID MY PEACE HAVE A GOOD DAY!

RHEANNA said...There is nothing, ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with breast feeding (If it weren't for boobs, mankind would not exist). There is nothing gross about breast feeding either. Have we all forgotten that most all mother mammals have mammary glands and feed their babies the food that was made for them? Why not humans? And i think little girls could pretend to nurse just fine without all the sound effects etc., but i dont think the doll is gross etc. I think more people should breast feed, it is better for your baby. I was unable to breastfeed due to my son's medical conditions, but i wanted to so bad.

brandi said...I'm not sure how I feel about this doll, but I really don't see how this is going to encourage teen pregnancy. I think that's laying the blame on a toy instead of on the parents where it belongs. Girls don't get pregnant because of a toy, they get pregnant because they aren't being supervised. Get over yourself Dede.
