No shoes, no shirt, no service. That means you, baby.
A six-month-old infant was told that she and her little piggies had to stay home. At least, they couldn't show themselves at Burger King in Sunset Hills, Mo.
The child, her mother and grandmother were told to leave because the manager said the little girl's bare tootsies posed a "health hazard," according to a report by Fox News in St. Louis.
Mother Jennifer Frederich said she told the restaurant manager that little Kaylin's feet are clean, since she's too young to walk or do anything that could get them dirty. The whole thing was mystifying, she said.
What brought the family to the fast-food joint was an outing of about two dozen members of their church youth group, who were heading to Rock the River, a Christian concert, under St. Louis' Gateway Arch, when they stopped off.
Frederich said she tried to put socks on Kaylin to placate the manager, but he still threatened to call the police. Everyone ate quickly and left, she said.
"I think they [Burger King staffers] need to understand it's a baby," she said. "They're not going to be walking around in their dirty, nasty feet."
No one at the local Burger King nor the corporate headquarters would comment on the incident. Frederich said that even if wanted to comply she couldn't since she hasn't purchased any shoes for her infant daughter yet.
So, what is the right age to put shoes on a child?

Pat said...Okay, maybe the little one should have some socks on, but to say she was a health hazard. Have you seen some of these fast food places and how well they keep their cooking areas, dining areas, and restrooms "Clean"? The themselves should be declared a HAZMAT area, much less unsafe. On top of this, if you bring it to the attention of the manager on duty; excuses or you are ignored. That and they just selling you a heart-attack-in-a sack. Health code violations my sweet aunt. Just some glorified fry cook trying to sound important.

Connor said...This is ridiculous. We're not getting anywhere in this country if we don't follow the rules even if they are stupid and unreasonable. People are people. I understand that it is a baby that can't walk but, really? That baby already has trillions of bacteria on her feet before she even went into the BK. Sad but true, there is nastier stuff in the air that we breath in. No matter how many baths you take, the minute you get out, trillions of bacteria are already on you. You can try to cover up the baby but, the stuff you cover them up with has bacteria too. It is amazing how much nasty stuff are on us as we speak! Just like us, most of that baby's skin is dead skin. It's a lose lose situation. Nobody wins so, move on.

angel said...it seems people may be getting smarter but having no common sense. if the manager was that concerned, he could have privately pulled the mother aside and asked her to not let the baby's feet touch the floor and explain the store policy. if done in a nice manner, any decent parent would have been happy to comply. after all she did try to put socks on the child. i would rather see a barefoot baby in a resteraunt, under control by the parent than a well shod 5 year old running around screaming while the parent does nothing.!! this is funny in that bk ads seem to cater to children and here in one bk they didnot want one in their resteraunt!!

April said...Wow--BURGER KING is upset by a baby with no shoes? Isn't this the same restaurant chain whose advertising portrays women as sex objects and has a "spokesman" who doesn't speak (just lurks around like a peeping Tom)? I think a boycott of this place is in order!
Oh, and "Tiana", I'm SURE your "Mother of the Year" award will be coming along any day now! (PLEASE tell us you don't plan to have any more kids. I'm sure the one you've got will be messed up enough if it lives to adulthood!)

Ray said...There is really only one solution.Mothers ,church groups families etc should go to Micky d s or wendys or some other fast food outlet.
It seems to me that constantly broadcasting their scarey logo in scarey situations and events such as this one that BK wants you to stay away.It wouldn't surprise me to find out that weeky sales meetings at head quarters is nothing more than a weed puffer.
They don't want to be considered wholesome, they want to be considered scarey,so let them have their wish.

They put them in the carts or the people just walk around with them on leashes and I think that is more of a health hazard than a babys feet!!!!!!! These are not even service dogs!! (I have no problem with the dogs aiding the blind, but the little accessory dogs have got to stop!) Would you like to put your purchases in a shopping cart where a dogs butt has been? How about your child????? Your purse???? People need to really grasp the big picture here. And lets think....are flip flops really any better? ever look at some peoples feet??????? I would gladly lick a babys foot anyday!!!!!

nevermind said...this is just another example of our society becoming too strict and rigid and not using thier bnrains. whats gonna be next?? im gettin a bit worried about all this crap. seems like every day somewhere someone is enmforcing yet another rules level of stupidity. i think the woman putting socks on her babys feet which hadnt been on the ground was good enough. ive taken my own son to mcdonalds many times when he was younger and he played in the play area where all the kids had no shoes on and only special socks you buy there for a dollar. some were even barefoot. in all those young years of my sons life goin there i only saw someone told to put socks on thier kids feet once. i see no issue with that as these kids hands are way dirtier than thier feet with all the nose picking and spitting up they do. lets not forget the fact small children/infants have diapers on which arent always clean or very effective at preventing messes. and bk is worried about 6 month old baby feet which were clean and nopt on the floor at all....stupid humans...

Supermommy said...On one hand, the child cannot walk yet so it may seem sensible not to put shoes/socks or booties on a child. However, from a nursing perspective, babies DO get "critters" in between their toes (some more than others). When I say "critters" I am referring to the accumulation of sweat and environmental particles (e.g. dust, dirt, lint from other garments like blankets) and it may go unnoticed. This breeds fungus which can spread. Parents can minimize these "critters" by cleaning in between their children's toes with cotton swabs/q-tips (wet, then dry). Yes, some babies DO also have stinky feet. Not to offend anyone, but odor usually indicates the presence of bacteria or fungus (regardless if one religiously washes their feet, and applicable to babies). Although it was unfair for BK to kick the baby out, they should have tactfully requested that the parents either put shoes or socks on the child. With all of my children, I put shoes on them whenever we went outside, regardless of their age (PERIOD). They make shoes in "Size 0". Two of my children never took off their shoes. My youngest daughter (who is a twin), however felt the need to keep taking her shoes and socks off and I would always put them back on, unless it was the end of our outing and we were on our way home anyway.

JWhit said...Most pediatricians recommend no shoes for babies until they learn to walk. They need to be able to feel the floor, and use their toes to walk well.
I recently took my baby to our local BK in just her diaper. It was almost 100 degrees. She did stay in her baby carrier car seat that day, tho.
