Update: Woman Pregnant With 12 Babies

A Tunisian woman is said to be pregnant with 12 babies - six boys and six girls.
The teacher, who has not been named, said she is in good health, according to a report in the Daily Mail and picked up by ParentDish UK.
But experts say it's unlikely any of the babies will survive.
The woman reportedly told hospital workers: "All I want to do is be able to hug my babies and show them all my love. This is an absolute miracle, and we all feel blessed after struggling so hard to have children."
She apparently had fertility treatment after having two miscarriages in two years.
Her husband, named as Marwan, told the Assabah newspaper: "In the beginning, we thought that my wife would give birth to twins, but more fetuses were discovered. Our joy was increased with the growing number. The medical team told us that my wife would give birth naturally."
However, experts say a natural birth will probably be impossible and labor could start as early as 20 weeks - too early for the babies to survive.
It is not known how far along the woman is now in her pregnancy, but it is thought she must be at least 16 weeks if the gender of the babies is known.
"It is certainly possible to carry 12 babies but not for long," said Peter Bowen-Simpkins, a fellow of Britain's Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists."I don't like to dampen her enthusiasm but the chances are she will deliver at 20 weeks. I wouldn't even give her a one in 100 chance of even one surviving. It's frightening."
There have been other cases of multiple births surviving. In California earlier this year, Nadya Suleman -- a.k.a. Octomom -- gave birth to eight healthy babies.
But it's unusual for this many babies to survive. Back in 1996 a British woman, Mandy Allwood, was pregnant with eight babies. She ignored medical advice to abort some of them and they all died after being born at 22 weeks.

Sandyone said...Nice poll options. The only way to be sane is to kill a few of your babies? How many would your recommend? Just a couple (so you can break OctoMom's record) or maybe 11 of them, since twins are such a pain in the ass? Do you really think your poll is funny or clever? I'm mostly immune to the stomach churning that pro-abortion people can drum up so easily, but this one is really disgusting.
You know, this website, since back when it was BloggingBaby, has always been lightweight entertainment and interest. Now, the bloggers are increasingly thoughtless and petty. Your decent bloggers have mostly left for other assignments.
No matter your political views on abortion, if you really think that aborting a bunch of babies is going to *keep* you sane, you don't know much about pregnancy, motherhood or babies.
At least you're all smart (and cowardly) enough to label this one "ParentDish Staff".

It is at the very least unethical. However, I am pro life to the core and have two grown children. YOU'RE RIGHT... WHAT KIND OF POLL IS THIS??? The REAL polling question should be... once this pregnancy is over, should she be FORCED to cut and tie her tubes because she's obviously too stupid to be a parent????

Dave Picard said...This woman is clearly sick. Women have 2 ovaries for a reason - more than 2 babies is a freak of nature or caused by a combination of medical and patient freaks.
If 10 of these fetuses are not aborted then ALL will have major deformaties, cognitive damage and other physical abnormalities. So should we attempt to let 12 babies be born into horrible and preventable lives or do we wait until they each die during/before/shortly after birth? Why aren't women like this sterilized and medical professionals banned so we don't need to discuss what to do AFTER the damage has begun???

It takes time and alot of money to do this right, but, in the end we had two beautiful children, absolutely healthy. It is very unfair the facility does not take into consideration the health and welfare of the children when acting in such a way. The woman should not be at fault, those that know better are. The doctors should be making professional and responsible decisions. It is up to them to advise and advise properly. When we had at the end five embrios placed, we were told of the possible implications. I would have kept them all because I could nto choose one to abort, I think it to be impossible for any mother. You litterally have to get the shot to the baby and wait for the heart rate to stop. I don't know about anyone else, but I sure could nto have done it. We emplanted three embrios at a time for the first four years, and that did not work. God is in all of this also. I have to tell everyone that i did not feel I could have as many babies as eggs and fertilized embrios we had, however, I did ask God to let the last chance work so I did't leave any behind, and had only one baby. It was our last try, the end of our embrios, and we had two beautiful children. So, yes, God is still involved here in this creation, however, these doctors should not be practicing in this area of expertise. They need to go be OBGYN's or something, but should not be practicing in this area. These babies if they survive are likely to live very unhealthy, very unfair lives. I would still keep all and let God be in control, but it really is unfair, and our Prayers are going out to these children. Isn't it always the kids that suffer at the hands of adult decisions?

Really? Sorry Billy and Jane, you don't have X other siblings because it would be too stressful for mommy.
If aborting X babies is required for any to have a significant chance of survival, that is different.

EH said...The responses to this article show how black & white and simplistic pro life in Every situation is.
Pro choice is not a simple & easy answer drummed up by those who find themselves in the situation of extreme multiples with a low success rate of survival.
Invitro fertilization is NOT a "miracle of God"...it is a result of medical technology. Medical technology comes with further decisions for the safety and success of the fertilization.
If we are to go with the Miracle of life and "not playing God" then how about this:
If God meant for you to have children you would, naturally. Playing God by utilizing Invitro fertilzation should not be used as it was not in God's plan or you. Then you don't have to be faced with the absurd situation of being pregnant with 12 embryo's and having to abort, remove or decrease embryo's to a safe amount that can actually survive. ....something God, Evolution or natural Survival of the Fittest would not allow.
As far as I'm concerned, these women who subscribe to the pro-life stance in these situations and unnaturally get pregnant with an amount of children that will most likely not survive or will surely have special needs should be charged with murder or reckless endangerment of a child if some do not survive or are born with abnormalities...

Please! Since we're talking religion, if God doesn't want something to happen, it doesn't. Where do you think medical technology comes from? We can't say that literature (i.e. the Bible) can be inspired, but scientific discoveries can't. We don't have time travel or teleportation, and it's not from a lack of trying. If something isn't meant to be or isn't meant to be right now, it's not made possible for us. Someone's always going to abuse technology, that doesn't make it evil or unGodly. Many people, in fact, I'd say most people, who have in-vitro are wonderful and responsible parents from conception on.

EH said...Sandyone - Yeah, I thought your reply would be simple minded and not respond to the reasoning I stated... ;)
Kathy, the charge of "murder" was simply referencing to the pro life belief that "a life is a life" no matter when or the circumstances...if a women has invitro and proceeds with this unsafe amount of embryo's and most likely outcome of some special needs and / or death of some then shouldn't she face the same harsh judgement that doctors who perform early term abortions face by the prolife group?
I also don't think any woman who has chosen selective reduction in these types of cases is doing so because of her "sanity" or cavalier attitude towards life or "baby killing"...she is doing what is medically necessary to have the invitro fertilization and life succeed!
Comments from above like "baby killing", "aborting a bunch of babies" "sorry Billy and Jane you don't have siblings because it was too stressful for Mommy" are ignorant and uniformed and obviously have never been in or cannot empathize with a woman in that situation. But hey, you probably believe Obama isn't a US citizen, too;)

SKL said...First of all, I did not see where they said they implanted 12 babies. The more traditional fertility treatments stimulate egg production, which results in an unknown number of eggs available for fertilization. Also, recall this is in Tunisia. Who knows how knowledgeable this woman (or even the doctor) was about the risks of the procedure? We cannot judge the mom unless we're sure she was aware of a realistic and manageable risk of getting pregnant with so many.
I don't believe in procedures that are likely to lead to the death of an embryo. That would include in-vitro fertilization where the number of embryos created is greater than the number realistically expected to be implanted and born alive (one or two). But as I said, I don't know if that was the case here.
As for those who imply it is anyone else's right (government, doctor, or otherwise) to decide that any of these lives should be terminated at this point, I say no way. I could understand if the mom & dad did so based on evidence that it is almost impossible for any of the babies to survive otherwise. But I also support their right to let God decide. It amazes me to see some people saying "we should force the woman to save some of her unborn by killing the rest of them." These are probably the same people who would support her choice to kill all of them to "save her sanity."

Saying the whole "if you are meant to have kids, by the miracle of God" blah blah... you are ignorant. So all of the drug users, child abusers, losers etc.... who get pregnant the "GOD" or biblical way are MEANT TO BE PARENTS to abuse their drug addicted children once they are born??? I think not! For those who NEED medical interception... there are several single and twin births that are perfectly successful and responsible. ANYTHING abused is a problem, including medical technology. BUT your post is IGNORANT!
