Will Bloody Texting PSA Get The Message To Teens?
Filed under: In The News, Health & Safety: Teens
Texting behind the wheel qualifies as irresponsible and completely stupid. There's even a word for it: intexicated. But is a gory British public service announcement going to reach kids who believe they are immortal?
Be warned: The four-minute PSA is extremely graphic, showing not only the realistic bloody injuries of three pretty teenage girls, but also an unresponsive infant in a car seat and a preschooler asking her unconscious and bleeding parents to wake up.
Mike Stout, director of the Division of Traffic Safety for the Illinois Department of Transportation, said that he didn't know if this kind of message would deter teens from texting behind the wheel -- and he wouldn't take the risk of trying to find out.
"This is way too gory," Stout told ParentDish. "...sometimes you have to push the envelope, but if you put this on TV, you'd have no control over who your audience was. Younger kids could see it, and I know some teens that it wouldn't affect at all."
As I watched the clip with my baby nearby, tears came to my eyes when the camera lingered on what appeared to be a dead infant in a car seat with a preschool-age sibling pleading for her parents in the front seat to "wake up."
So the PSA gets right to the hearts of parents to avoid the lure of a quick text. But would the teenagerin the car behind me do the same?

Claude M. said...I worked as a young medical resident in the rescue helicopters EMT with the first generation of Blood pumps in this kind of accidents, 30 years after lifestyle has changed but the accidents still are happening everyday, life is fragile. Teenagers have to know the importance of driving with a constant attention of what may happen on the road and avoid any distraction.
A car is a powerful engine to ease life not to be the mass destruction weapon it happens to be.

No Phones? said...LS... This and any other safety message should be repeated often. Just because you think it's being ignored doesn't mean that it won't get through to some. What angers me is how many people involve the innocent driver with their stupid "I'm indestructable" attitude. And, most likely this happening to someone won't be a wake up call, they probably won't wake up at all.

We had to sit thru a slide show put together by the state patrol that was abou 45 minutes long...It was very graphic, no sound track, actual local accidents from a teen hanging out a bus window and being decapitated by a telephone pole, etc.I recently gave up my driving priviledge after 50 years of driving so I would not become the perpetrator of a scene like I saw in this movie...This slide show stayed with me for over 50 years of driving..to the point I never had anything but a few parking lot fender benders over the years....This type of thing impacted me greatly over the years..It kept me thinking about the concequeces of inattentive driving and as a result kept me and my family and others on the road maybe a little bit safer

RenBWAY said...holy cow...i never text while driving, and really try to encourage my friends not to. with all of the other things that can happen on the road, why take one more risk? this ad is gory, but it would be good on young adult websites. it definetly gets its point across.

I also work for the Department of Transportation, and I give words of wisdom on driving safety to the general public. I think the public serviice advertisement is a good idea. You have to be really doped up to see this video and it has no affect on how you act as a driver.

We live in the time where the kids rule the house not the parents. The government sticks their nose in every1s business. That is why i feel they should air the ad every week

Mom of 4 adults said...Decades ago, I recalled reading a Dear Abby column that highlighted a hypothetical letter from a teen driver who was relaying his last moments of life in a car crash that he caused. For those times it was fairly graphic regarding the damage to a body; additionally it storied the emotional toll on all those after the accident and death including the sad desperate thoughts of the dead teen. We posted that Abby column on our fridge, every time we had a new driver in our house, which occurred every year for 4 years. Each child was provided a copy and I believe it was also referenced in their school's yearly safety program. I found it to be beneficial as did they. Yes there are always going to be young adults who believe they are invincible and jaded to reality, but for the most part, something like this PSA or that antiquated letter will provide a different perspective and cause a pause in their thinking or hopefully actions. I have witnessed teens after a safety program and even those that are laughing and appear sarcastic, have gotten the message if only for a brief moment. Any moment of awareness may prevent a moment of disaster....

This, the ultimate in "negative reinforcement" could, statistically do more harm than good. There is even a chance it will encourage (as a dare) texting among certain personality types. Though this syndrome definitely needs serious attention, I believe the 2 best approaches would be (1) PSAs delivered by appropriate role models from the world of sports and entertainment, and (2) strict law enforcement that includes big time fines and, possibly, even license suspension for first-time offenders.

I will give you that kids have become somewhat immune to the gore as they sit and are allowed to watch such movies as SAW and the other perverse slasher flicks of late...movies that only get more perverse and disgusting than the last.
But, I watched this video and must say that I am confident my daughters would see the value in the lesson that can be learned here. Bravo to the producer. For once, a PSA that moves past the politically correct and shows how quickly a seemingly innocent activity can turn into a life altering a tragedy.

I can honestly say watching this movie touched me deeply and i think this shouldnt just be directed towards teenagers but young adults as well. when and if i do get my licence back I will never text and drive, even when my phone rings i pull over to talk. now that my daughter is getting older she watches everything i do. she learns from my habbits. teenagers are just mockaries of there parent. children and teens see their parents lets say driving and talking on the phoned, why wouldnt they do the same thing or even text?

preciouslynnz said...I don't understand how people can say that this is too gory...This is life...this is what happens every day....maybe the reason some teens think they are bullet proof is because they haven't seen enough of what can happen to them when they speed, drink and drive, etc etc. People need to see it in order not to be ignorant to it..if we put it on a website then chances are not a whole lot of people will see it...however if it's on national TV then a heck of a lot more people will see it..if they want to change the channel they can...end of story....life is not all roses and rainbows people... blood and guts happen so don't try to shy your kids away from it because eventually they will see it one day..hell they might even witness it first hand....I say put it on TV lets wake up this world and show people that it isn't all roses and rainbows...in order for us to solve problems we must address them and get them out in the open so we can find a solution...not hide them under a rock.....no matter what you do people will be offended by something done or said but hey would you rather offend someone and open someone elses eyes to what texting and driving can do...or would you rather not show it because it might offend someone and keep those kids eyes closed and maybe they will die in a crash with texting involved??

JLL said...I think it would impact any teenager. I do remember being a teenager, and while admittedly I was a selfish kid who felt somewhat invincible, seeing something like this gets right to a person's emotions no matter what age they are. I wish this video could be shown to everyone.
I hate texting in general and think those caught engaging in it whiole driving should be arrested, their cars impounded, and then prosecuted. That's what happens to drunk drivers, so that should be the case with anyone stupid enough to knowingly endanger innocent people on the roads.
