Will Bloody Texting PSA Get The Message To Teens?
Filed under: In The News, Health & Safety: Teens
Texting behind the wheel qualifies as irresponsible and completely stupid. There's even a word for it: intexicated. But is a gory British public service announcement going to reach kids who believe they are immortal?
Be warned: The four-minute PSA is extremely graphic, showing not only the realistic bloody injuries of three pretty teenage girls, but also an unresponsive infant in a car seat and a preschooler asking her unconscious and bleeding parents to wake up.
Mike Stout, director of the Division of Traffic Safety for the Illinois Department of Transportation, said that he didn't know if this kind of message would deter teens from texting behind the wheel -- and he wouldn't take the risk of trying to find out.
"This is way too gory," Stout told ParentDish. "...sometimes you have to push the envelope, but if you put this on TV, you'd have no control over who your audience was. Younger kids could see it, and I know some teens that it wouldn't affect at all."
As I watched the clip with my baby nearby, tears came to my eyes when the camera lingered on what appeared to be a dead infant in a car seat with a preschool-age sibling pleading for her parents in the front seat to "wake up."
So the PSA gets right to the hearts of parents to avoid the lure of a quick text. But would the teenagerin the car behind me do the same?

Then hospital recovery, followed by home in wheelchair for the rest of summer. And all because someone [22 yr old male] texting slammed into their car going 55 mph while they were stopped at a red light. She now has a permanent titanium rod in her femur and going to rehab to rebuild her muscles in her leg--the fractures will sill take several months to knit; her friends who were in the front seat are going to therapy for whiplash and related head injuries... they can't remember anything about the accident or even just before. They were both tempoarily knocked out by the impact.
This video was very real for me...I wish everyone would view this not just teens....

Mom of Five Alive said...This video relays an absolutely striking message and reality of what could happen.....OR WORSE....while texting behind the wheel of a moving vehicle. UNFORTUNATELY, young adults (or ANYONE of any age acting irresponsibly behind the wheel) will continue this example of carelessness, in addition to drunk driving, loud music, talking on cell phones, eating, putting on makeup and other irresponsible behavior which will result in the useless waste of life. There's or innocent others. The "it won't happen to me" philosophy has been overused and everyone needs to WAKE THE "DUCK" UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dad: Where are you going?
Daughter: With some friends. I will use your car. While I drive, I will be texting. I will crash your car in a bad accident. Don't wait up for me.
The father sits in shock. The daughter exits the house. A crash is heard in the distance.
Less graphic. More use of imagination. Impressionable (to me)
The English version horrified my teen son--hope it works!!!.

We expect them to ignore this, we expect them to keep on doing what they are doing, we expect them to be bulletproof, and therefore, they do and they are...set your expectations higher and maybe they will have something to live up to.

mykranili said...Anyone watch a new-release movie lately? Something like, Last House on the Left, Saw, or maybe the latest James Bond film? Watching women geting gang raped, human bodies being reduced to bloody pulp and seeing people being murdered is something that kids, adults and teens see almost every day when they seek entertainment which is, rather often. So do you really think a short film like this with intended "shock value" will have any effect? Probably not. If anything, I can imagine teens ignoring this shock-film while texting their friends as it plays, trying to find out which slasher movie everyone's going to see later that night...

I agree with the posted Ginger if it only influences one person hopefully that is the driver that is on the highway with me.

When presented as it is, as a infomercial-style re-enaction, we give it as much credibility as we feel a TV Show deserves.
When actual real-time footage is shown, it has a lasting impact. I speak for myself, a professional screen communicator.

I dont think this should be publicly broadcasted, but would be better than some of the cheap videos they show in drivers ed. If this gets through to 1 person it was worth watching. If I had to teach someone about drivers safety this would be on a list of videos I would show.

I think your right but maybe since it is like "Saw" they'll watch this all the way through before turning their attention somewhere else, and maybe if it does catch those precious few teenagers it's worth it. I think to say it won't work and give up is just ignorant.
That is not always true some of these kids do take things seriously.

Yes they think they know it all and have a lot to learn but this would have a huge impact on most teens because it is REALITY . This is not like the movies we watched in drivers ed. Those were goofy. This can't be compaired to a FAKE movie or video game. I do agree however that the youth of today are desensitized to a lot but most of them know right from wrong and choose to do what they want reguardless.

To the commentor who said some kids might have remembered and been affected, I am one of them. I guess I didn't hang out with your freinds who "laughed all the way to the next class" after reviewing it. At that age, I'm sure it was the insecurity, nervousness and false macho atitude that made you and your friends laugh. What I'd really like to know is when you went home and lay awake that night thinking about the scenes you had witnessed earlier in the video. That's how it really affected you.
