Will Bloody Texting PSA Get The Message To Teens?
Filed under: In The News, Health & Safety: Teens
Texting behind the wheel qualifies as irresponsible and completely stupid. There's even a word for it: intexicated. But is a gory British public service announcement going to reach kids who believe they are immortal?
Be warned: The four-minute PSA is extremely graphic, showing not only the realistic bloody injuries of three pretty teenage girls, but also an unresponsive infant in a car seat and a preschooler asking her unconscious and bleeding parents to wake up.
Mike Stout, director of the Division of Traffic Safety for the Illinois Department of Transportation, said that he didn't know if this kind of message would deter teens from texting behind the wheel -- and he wouldn't take the risk of trying to find out.
"This is way too gory," Stout told ParentDish. "...sometimes you have to push the envelope, but if you put this on TV, you'd have no control over who your audience was. Younger kids could see it, and I know some teens that it wouldn't affect at all."
As I watched the clip with my baby nearby, tears came to my eyes when the camera lingered on what appeared to be a dead infant in a car seat with a preschool-age sibling pleading for her parents in the front seat to "wake up."
So the PSA gets right to the hearts of parents to avoid the lure of a quick text. But would the teenagerin the car behind me do the same?

I could be the one who was responsible for KILLING my friends, an infant, her parents, and leaving her young sister an orphan. I WON'T text again while driving. I rarely do it now (only if I feel its important). But NOTHING could be that important. I think it would be effective if they showed that video to teenagers. Even if they don't stop texting while driving, they WILL think twice. And that one time they don't, could make ALL the difference.

VickyVue said...I totally agree with LS, kids today are totally desensitized by the blood and guts of 'the real world'. As LS stated, it's not really real, until it happens to them. When I was a teenager, we didn't have so many 'distractions' to reality. Maybe that's why they don't believe anything is real anymore, everything seemingly is simulated.

Some were texting and some just talking on the phone. People must realize that every time you get behind the wheel to leave home the chances are that either your life or someone you know is probably at stake due to people not having the common sense to pay attention while they are driving.
Is this PSA graphic? Maybe some think so, but I see it as no worse than some of the slasher movies that our older teens and maybe younger teens watch. I personally think it should be mandated that any teen obtaining their learners permit or drivers license should have to watch this PSA. Maybe it should be mandatory at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) when they go in to get their licenses. I also agree that adults need to watch it, maybe when they renew their license at the (DMV). If the license is renewed over the Internet renewal should not be allowed until they have electronically signed an affidavit stating they have watched the video. Then only after the video has played can they renew over the Internet.
I too have seen numerous people talking or texting on their cell phones while driving; a few have almost ran me off the road. Through their actions and as witness to this short PSA video it has and will continue to re-enforce my thoughts and actions as a defensive driver.

If even one young (or older) driver doesn't text while driving after viewing it, then it is worth it.

I am one of the ones that was shown the "Death On The Highway" movie (or something like that) that displayed genuine, graphic images of mangled and burned corpses resulting from car accidents in Driver's Ed. class. I passed out during the movie, but there just aren't very many people as oversensitive as I am--for the one student in the class that was so affected, there were at least 19 others that did not bat an eye at it.

Everyone who applies for a license should be required to view this video. If ONE life is saved, it would be worth it.

Ashley said...I would definately show this to a teen, although I do agree that I wouldn't want some audiences to watch it like young children or possibly even elderly so I would use it as a tool that would be shown in school or maybe even youth gatherings. If I were a band I would show it at my concert for example. It definately opened my eyes as I have texted while driving, and I am going to make a conscious effort to PULL OVER to a parking lot or something because the extra few minutes out of my transit to do so is NOTHING compared to the possible consequences displayed in this video, and it should be a wake up call to all of us!

I've always thought texting while driving is wrong and this movie would show some teens not to text and drive. it sure made me eve more positive that i wouldn't text while driving. I wouldnt be able to live with myself if those were my friends and knowing i killed all those people just by texting someone. its ridiculous. I feel no one should try to even pick up their phones while on the road.

Candy Brantigan said...It's true, teenagers are not the only ones who text message. I see plenty of adults doing it. What I don't understand is they are CELL PHONES...why can't you just CALL.
I know myself if I get a call, sure there is the urge to pick up the phone (not hands free YET)...but I wait until I can get to a street I can pull over on. What did we do BEFORE cell phones were around?????
I would definately air this video. It made tears come to my eyes, not only for the toddler and infant, but for the adults. It could be my own children.
AIR IT!

DM said...Take it from someone that knows. This video is very graphic i know and maybe kids wont listen but its worth a try. You wont know until you try. I did it since i was driving and had a phone and im 21. I did it until i lost my mother 2 months ago in a car accident where a 20 year old was doing what, on his cell phone. Yes you cant change someones mind unless something happens to them like it did to me or like it did in the video. but even if one or two teens change bc of the video thats one or two less to get into an accident. and dont criticize me bc of this. noone knows what its like to lose a parent at 21 from a cell phone unless it happened to them. it is the worst feeling someone has to feel. I am totally against cell phones in cars and will be for anything that comes about to ban cell phones. i rather pay attention driving then know i killed someone from something so stupid. thanks to the people reading this. dont respond if your going to criticize

Alan said...I agree with your statement. When I had my old phone, I would always send a quick text to someone, like if they said something funny I would respond with "lol." Now, since I recently purchased a touch phone, I don't text behind the wheel.
Also, up until this past January I used to be a heavy drinker until my best friend got into a horrible car accident involving a drunk driver. Both her and her friend walked away from the accident with no injuries. Ever since then, I have not dared to drink alcohol. While watching this video, all I could think of was her accident, only they walked away with no injuries. I almost cried because she means a lot to me and I thought about her accident.
