Are you hearing this morning that Emma and Jacob are now the top baby names in America? Do you get the funny feeling you've heard that somewhere before? It's not your imagination.
The Social Security Administration announced the most popular names of the year back in May, including Emma's rise to overtake long-time champion Emily at the #1 spot. A press alert from the SSA has brought that data back to the top of the news cycle. But be assured that it's still the same list of names from back in the spring
In case you missed it the first time around, here are America's top 10 names for boys and girls:
BOYS
1. Jacob
2. Michael
3. Ethan
4. Joshua
5. Daniel
6. Alexander
7. Anthony

GIRLS

Jill said...Do you want to be? There's a little something to be said for originality. My name's never been on it either, and while Jill isn't exactly different, it was always nice being the only Jill in the class.
As for the lists, isn't it interesting how the boy names are so classic while the girl names seem "trendy", albeit old-fashioned?

Annika said...Growing up I didn't like my name (and actually, I'm still not fond of it), but it's becoming more popular these days. I noticed that the boys' name list stayed nearly unchanged for the last 10 years, while the girls' list reflects more current trends. I chose my own children's names according to what sounded nice or unusual to me at the time, not what trends dictated, although I still ended up with an Aiden in the mix. :-)

Sandyone said...It drives me nuts when the great names become popular! I've always loved the American versions of Irish names...seems lots of others like them, too. None of my kids have names in the top 50. I've always wanted a Sophie, but there are too many these days and I think my childbearing days will be over by the time the name fades. Instead, I'll just enjoy all the little Bellas and Sophies running around!

Jasmine said...Emma and Jacob were the two characters in the movie called "For Richer, or for Poor", played by Kirstie Alley and Tim Allen. Tim Allen was a millionaire, and his wife Kirstie spent all of his money, Their lawyer was embezzling money from them, The IRS accuses them of tax fraud, so they run to a villiage where only the Amish exist. Here they find love again, as before they were only involved in materialistic things. Very Old Names, but still nice........
