Parents Say Pornographic Candy Wrappers Are Not All That Sweet

Simon Simpkins of West Yorkshire was at the market shopping with his wife. They decided to buy some Haribo brand Maoam (pronounced ma-o-am) candy for their children, according to London's Daily Mail.
Then he noticed the labels.
Simpkins' quotes, from the Daily Mail, are perfectly priceless and brilliantly British. "The lemon and lime are locked in what appears to be a carnal encounter," the chap said. "The lime, whom I assume to be the gentleman in this coupling, has a particularly lurid expression on his face."

Are these wrappers inappropriate or just silly? Credit: Europics / CEN
Simpkins caused quite a row (American translation: made a fuss), having a "heated exchange" with the store manager, according to the Daily Mail. His wife, "became quite distressed and had to sit down in the car park." (In America, we call that a parking lot.)
A spokesperson for Haribo, the German candy maker that manufactures the offending sweets, told the Mail that, "This jovial Maoam man is very popular with fans, both young and old."
Based on those pictures, we can see why he would be popular. The company slogan, by the way, is "Kids and grown-ups love it so, the happy world of Haribo." Haribo, which is an acronym for Hans Reigel, Bonn, the founder and the company's headquarters, made its name in the United States when it introduced gummi bears in the 1980's.
Further digging on the Haribo website found the sound of a moaning man on Planet Haribo, the company's interactive play space for kids. Since it's a pop-up window, we can't link to it, but go to the candy company's site yourself and take a listen.
"Ever since I was a little girl, Maoam had funny TV commercials for kids," said Dagmar Kappel, a German teacher now living stateside, and the friend of a ParentDish staffer. "That's what they are known for."
What do you think? Are the candy labels offensive? Or sweet?

In other words, you are mistaking the dirt on your glasses in judging an innocuous illustration as anything remotely "pornographic". I would imagine more problems are created in children by the mindset of these "protectors" than ever could a simple candy wrapper.

holly said...please give me a break. if you parents make a fuss over any more childish things im going to break you all. its been stated by experts time and time again--if you make a fuss over something like the picture on a candy wrapper, you not only have embarrassed them for life because of all the media attention you draw but also they will figure out why you are making such a fuss. (except that your children will end up hating you) and i will hate you for making a mountain out of a mole hill. for the love of pete theres worse things that happen that could be reported (weather, carjackings, killings, murders, bank robberies) but instead they are reporting that dad couldnt be a dad and just ban the candy from his own home hes got to ban it from everybody elses homes as well. good job there idiot. and the next time the doll or the candy picture makes you upset, realize that the schools are worse than pictures and being married makes us like you parents and the planet is doomed to fail. yes id give the candy to my kids. id rather have my kids come to me with questions and concerns rather than have them go to school or their friends to learn about it in bigger detail than they need. but id also trust them and not blow it out of proportion if i saw a candy wrapper with "questionable" pictures. id rather make a fuss about them eating candy before their dinner or hiding candy from me or eating candy when its not allowed. this pompous jerk of a dad went too far.

The "moaning" referred to in the news article was a man's voice making a yummy sound... mmmmmmm.
People hear and see what they want to and blow things all out of proportion.

I have to agree totally with what you say. Children do not focus on that type of stuff. Ask any random kid what the package of a skittles bag looks like and 9/10 of the time the kid can't say. Spongebob is a perfect example. No child thought anything wrong of the way he played with Patrick until a parent went crazy after watching an episode. The only way a child will make an ordeal out of that packaging is if they already know what is going on in the picture.
P. S. Those Cinnamon Toast Crunch commercials are worse.

Carole said...The packaging really is inappropriate. It's not about being uptight, it's abpout how far marketing can go without being censored. There are many products that get pulled for their slogans. Recently,
As-spray was taken off because its for offensive odors of the butt. Notice the spelling. Just leave out an "S". The cute camel for camel cigarettes got censored due to the fact it appealed to teens. Companies will push it as far as can go only for the money factor. If the candy is good then why the sexy packaging, especially if the target audience is children. Or is it?

Heck when I looked at the article and the saw the package I thought for sure they had printed the wrong label cause it looked a weird cartoon man drooling over food he wanted to eat....If this guy saw somthing offensive maybe the problem is not on the package BUT IN HIS MIND.....
