Parents Say Pornographic Candy Wrappers Are Not All That Sweet

Simon Simpkins of West Yorkshire was at the market shopping with his wife. They decided to buy some Haribo brand Maoam (pronounced ma-o-am) candy for their children, according to London's Daily Mail.
Then he noticed the labels.
Simpkins' quotes, from the Daily Mail, are perfectly priceless and brilliantly British. "The lemon and lime are locked in what appears to be a carnal encounter," the chap said. "The lime, whom I assume to be the gentleman in this coupling, has a particularly lurid expression on his face."

Are these wrappers inappropriate or just silly? Credit: Europics / CEN
Simpkins caused quite a row (American translation: made a fuss), having a "heated exchange" with the store manager, according to the Daily Mail. His wife, "became quite distressed and had to sit down in the car park." (In America, we call that a parking lot.)
A spokesperson for Haribo, the German candy maker that manufactures the offending sweets, told the Mail that, "This jovial Maoam man is very popular with fans, both young and old."
Based on those pictures, we can see why he would be popular. The company slogan, by the way, is "Kids and grown-ups love it so, the happy world of Haribo." Haribo, which is an acronym for Hans Reigel, Bonn, the founder and the company's headquarters, made its name in the United States when it introduced gummi bears in the 1980's.
Further digging on the Haribo website found the sound of a moaning man on Planet Haribo, the company's interactive play space for kids. Since it's a pop-up window, we can't link to it, but go to the candy company's site yourself and take a listen.
"Ever since I was a little girl, Maoam had funny TV commercials for kids," said Dagmar Kappel, a German teacher now living stateside, and the friend of a ParentDish staffer. "That's what they are known for."
What do you think? Are the candy labels offensive? Or sweet?

Magz said...yeah I think it's sexual.
Is it really necessary to have the lime with it's tongue hanging out or be clutching a lemon between it's legs?
Don't sell the young kids short. They know more than you think.
Parents may monitor what kids watch on tv but forget to protect them from the commercials which can be real scary and or sexual.

Emma said...What really bothers me about the article is the "translations" of British sayings. My God, we aren't THAT stupid. I agree with everybody who is saying that kids don't think like that. All they would see is the candy.

What if the red wrapper candy - cherries and limes - were bananas and limes.
Now how would that look?

Genius IQ said...Of course the labels are using sexual imagery to sell their product. It's a technique as old as advertising (for reference, consult the book SUBLIMINAL SEDUCTION). But marketers are usually more subtle in their depictions of sex and body parts. If you want to see some sexual imagery, go and have a look at your cereal boxes. Notice how the milk always seems to be 'spurting' as the cereal falls into it. Also, look for phallic shapes in the spurting milk, and look for um, 'female shapes' in the bits of cereal. Also, take a peek at your yogurt labels. You will notice anatomical shapes among the depictions of fruit pictured there - cherries become 'butts' and you can guess what the stems look like. There are countless other examples of course. These images register on our subconscious minds, and the hidden message is "if you buy our product, you will have a vigorous sex life." Also, any item that utilizes a depiction of ICE provides fertile ground for artists with creative minds and large contracts to express the prurient desires of their employers. And as to the 'genders' of the 'fruitful' fruits depicted above, the prominent nose of the lime is a dead giveaway, providing a stiff hint as to the goodies hidden south of the border.

Gary said...Hey Genius: I would consider it pornographic, if the images were used on the packaging of stuff like edible underware or flavored douche powder, real stuff you can actually buy in porno shops! But on CANDY? All kids see is bright colors before they tear the wrapper off and throw it on the floor , without even looking at the picture, and gobble the sweets inside. And to Magz: Dont sell your kids short: You think more than they know!

Laura said...Called me ignorant, but I don't get it. I don't see what all the fuss is about. It just looks like some fruit to me. I don't get the "sexual" undertone or implications. It looks perfectly innocuous to me.

Jenny said...I can't believe so many people responded to the poll as the wrappers being 'appalling'. First of all, I don't see any penises or vaginas on these wrappers. Yes, that would be pretty graphic for a candy wrapper. But still, get real, this is the human body. It is natural. People don't complain about all the violence children watch in cartoons, which I think is more disturbing than the human body!!!

J said...Why does not liking a candy wrapper cause a heated argument with the store manager? I'll bet the "Dad" was just looking for attention, and is "on the dole" meaning he works hard each month waiting for his gov't check.

Ana said...Seriously?!? With all the trouble going on in the world today - this is the top priority for these people - the woman actually had to go sit in the parking lot?!? If this is the worst these people have to worry about - hooray for them. A person who sees sexuality in those images needs help. What does this man think is the intention of Haribo - to corrupt the youth with deviant images?? Sir, get a hobby and a life.

JustMe said...Only adults would even realize the sexual aspect of these pictures. To kids, they're just the fruit flavors of the candy. I think the whole shebang's hillarious! This father apparently needs to lick more cherries & ummm... well.... ah yeah some more lemons. lol Looks like the cherries & the lemon are happy so where's the harm? If they're all consenting fruits, I say leave them be.
