Next Up, A Pole-Dancing Doll

Would you buy your daughter a pole-dancing doll? Credit: Gizmodo.com
If anyone was wondering if the world was doomed, here is your confirmation.
The scoop on this new plaything came from Gizmodo's Jesus Diaz, and features a somewhat grainy photo of a doll in a shiny dress hanging on a pole. A giant heart emblazoned with the word "Pole Dance" is at the top. The box promises "Style." "Interesting." "Music." "Flash." "Up and Down." "Go Round and Round." It might've said "Ewww," "Gross," "Criminal"," but in all likelihood the upstanding manufacturers ran out of room.
No mention is made of inserting money anywhere.
In an email message, Diaz told us today: "As far as I can tell, it's a real product. It didn't seem PhotoShopped to me. It feels more like the typical Chinese-made product you can only find in low cost stores."
We were unable to confirm the actual existence of this product. Google searches turn up nothing more than references to the Gizmodo item. So perhaps there is some hope for the planet.
Then again, maybe not.
In case you haven't noticed, pole-dancing has become mainstream. Miley Cyrus' recent performance on the Teen Choice Awards on August 10th generated a lot of controversy.
Then there is the video of Miley's younger sister Noah, who is 9, dancing around a pole with some friends during a Teen Choice Awards pre-show party. Maybe they should re-name it the Teen Bad Choices Awards.
Going back three years, there was an uproar over a real pole-dancing product that some felt was being marketed as a children's toy. In 2006, the Peekaboo Pole Dancing Kit was pulled from the toy section of a British store after a public outcry. The kit included fake money, a garter, instructional DVD and of course, a pole.
Even if the Pole Dance doll turns out to be fake, the real problem is how easy it is to believe that it's real. So when anyone says that the pole that Miley and Noah danced around was not a stripper pole, they're wrong.
It was.
Let's face it, stripping has become mainstream. Does this mean that little girls who catch a glimpse of the Cyrus sisters will grow up and pursue pole-dancing as a profession? Hopefully not. If kids always became what they pretended to be when they were young, we'd be a nation of astronauts, fairy princesses and super heroes.
That said, sexualizing childhood is bad news from the get go. Little girls should not be learning that doing a sexy dance is a way to entertain? (There will be time enough in college to learn such behavior.)
What do you think? Is this pole-dancing doll real?

For all you "Christians" out there breathing fire over this (or anything else the kid does) remember that you were a lowly sinner, too, before you were saved. You still most likely are... Being a Christian doesn't make you perfect, it makes you forgiven. People in glass houses and all that...

I do agree with Cee64E, having three daughters of my own, that little girls twirl around poles (swingset poles, stair banisters etc..) like little boys use those same poles to karate flip around.
It comes down to parental decision, I don't buy my girls Bratz dolls, I don't allow my minor-age girls to dress like twenty-something club whores. I want my children to be children, plenty of adult time in their life to decide how they choose to portray themselves in the world.

I feel that it should not b on the market period!!. That whats wrong with these little girls now seeing to much on tv and growing up to fast. They need not to let this doll be on the market to be sold. The people who came up with this is oly thinking about ,oney because they know just because it's a miley doll people children are going to want it. Focus on the Kids education not a stripper doll !!!

Kyle said...Actually I like the Idea of them dancing around the Pole, It's the adults that associate it with stripers, the Kids probably just think of it as something to hold onto so my uncoordinated ass doesn't hit the floor. Looking at most of the kids today, let them dance, or any other exercise, that can keep them from getting any wider . I'd rather see them pole dance now, and stay in shape, then wait 5-10 years and resort to pole smoking to get a boyfriend, cause there to fat to get one any other way.

Marie said...Wow, you'd rather see kids pole dancing than gain weight!!??? Okay you have officially made me understand why our kids are so screwed up. Thank you mom of the year. I don't mean to lash out, but what you wrote just sounds absurd.

Ms. GTO said...I bet you'd think differently if you caught YOUR daughter doing it.
And why are you so worried about young girls staying in shape to attract a boyfriend? That just furthers the point. Women are being sexualized and objectified- why should we have to do ANYTHING just to get/keep a man? I work out because I WANT to, not because my husband tells me I HAVE to or else.

ines said...Yes, that's a good idea - let your daughter pole dance now to "stay in shape". What the hell is wrong with you. I guess if a bunch of kids decided to commit suicide you'd encourage that too. After all - everyone's doing it.

Dana said...I just cant believe they are making miley and her sister out to be bad people for kids. I didnt see anything wrong with what miley did on the pole, she held on the pole while people pulled her on a cart.. Maybe people making this crap up with miley and her sister is the one putting more stuff into peoples heads to even think things are in a bad way. For miley's sister she is 9.. come on guys.. do we always believe what we hear, look at the youtube believe is seeing?? You know people publishing this stuff have to try and make it out to be much more so they get the most reviews!!
