Boy Hero, 8, Saves Drowning Grandpa
Filed under: In The News, Amazing Kids
An elderly Minnesota man is alive today thanks to the heroic actions of his 8-year-old grandson, who rescued the man - a Holocaust survivor - after he broke his hip and fell headfirst into a swimming pool.
Tanner Jensen was visiting his grandparents at their Minnetonka, Minn., condominium when he and his grandfather, Curtis Hort, decided to take a swim in the building's pool, according to KARE-TV. Hort slipped, broke his hip and slid into the water. He was unable to swim because he couldn't move his right side.
Tanner, who started swimming as a 1-year-old, jumped in and grabbed his grandfather by the hair to pull his head above water. The station reported that the grandson guided his grandfather to the shallow end of the pool and then ran inside to alert his grandmother, who called 911.
"It seems like a small act, but it was really brave and fearless," Virginia Jensen, Tanner's mother, told KARE-TV.
Tanner's actions also caught the attention of the city of Minnetonka, and he will be honored for the heroic rescue of his grandfather.
Hort, who survived a concentration camp during World War II, said that he has learned to treasure every second of his life. Thanks to Tanner, he has more to savor.
"I am grateful that the almighty has seen fit to let me live to this ripe age and enjoy the beauty of his creation and the love of my family," he told KARE-TV.

Judy said...Thankfully this turned out well, but as a water safety instructor I know that many children who go to the rescue of others in trouble in the water frequently end up drowned as well. The safest measure would have been to throw grandpa a flotation device which should be required by law to be at all public pools. Secondly, a hook or pool skimmer could be extended. Lastly, even a beach towel could be used to extend the reach to someone in trouble, safely from the side. All lifeguards are taught that going into the water is the last resort because of the danger involved. Please get water safety instruction for all your family member!!!!

Judy said...See, that is where the training comes in. You don't have much time to get out of a burning house but we are still trained to crawl instead of run - and that training saves lives - as does water safety training.

keb said...Grandpa fell in headfirst. When the boy jumped in he pulled on Grandpa's hair to bring his head above water ... Does this sound like Grandpa would have been able to grab onto a towel? Would he even have seen it?
The boy handled the situation in a quick, calm manner.GOOD JOB!

Yve said...So are you gonna lecture your kid or grand kid if you break a hip and fall in the water and he/she doesn't save you the "proper" way. Gimme a break. Kids don't have those kinds of reasoning skills..they just haven't lived long enough to develope them. Why is it that you see a story with a postive ending, and there always has to be that one butt putting their unwelcomed negative 2 cents in. Give the kid a hand. He deserves it!

If I would have done what I planned and sent my child to a sitter while I went out of town I would have came back to a dead father and she would have lost her grandpa. But I left her here against what I thought was better for her. She got up for school that morning and he was in the kitchen preping her breakfast and started having a heart attack if she wouldnt have been here 911 wouldnt have gotten called at all. Thanks to her and her very strong will and control of her emotions she saved him. I think all kids should be rewarded for the good they do in trying to save anothers life.

MsRaye said...Richelle, your'e right and soooo much more. I've had one hip replacement (after it was broken for 7 months at 55 years old). I had no insurance and spent many days on the couch alone and unable to move (even with a walker) for more than a whole day. Think about that. Now I'm looking at the next. Fortunately, I have insurance now. Unless you've been through this, you have no idea! I have 5 grandkids and oldest is 17. I know anyone of them would have done this for me and they did help me tremendously when they could. Pull my hair out! Just save me. God bless this little guy!!!
