Boy Hero, 8, Saves Drowning Grandpa

An elderly Minnesota man is alive today thanks to the heroic actions of his 8-year-old grandson, who rescued the man - a Holocaust survivor - after he broke his hip and fell headfirst into a swimming pool.
Tanner Jensen was visiting his grandparents at their Minnetonka, Minn., condominium when he and his grandfather, Curtis Hort, decided to take a swim in the building's pool, according to KARE-TV. Hort slipped, broke his hip and slid into the water. He was unable to swim because he couldn't move his right side.
Tanner, who started swimming as a 1-year-old, jumped in and grabbed his grandfather by the hair to pull his head above water. The station reported that the grandson guided his grandfather to the shallow end of the pool and then ran inside to alert his grandmother, who called 911.
"It seems like a small act, but it was really brave and fearless," Virginia Jensen, Tanner's mother, told KARE-TV.
Tanner's actions also caught the attention of the city of Minnetonka, and he will be honored for the heroic rescue of his grandfather.
Hort, who survived a concentration camp during World War II, said that he has learned to treasure every second of his life. Thanks to Tanner, he has more to savor.
"I am grateful that the almighty has seen fit to let me live to this ripe age and enjoy the beauty of his creation and the love of my family," he told KARE-TV.

He learned so much about what to do in emergencies and how to keep his head. His friends have always looked to him for leadership and I'm very proud of him. He is a third generation to belong to Scouting.

Dick Olsen said...keb is right, the kid did what he had to do when he had to do it. If the halfwitted adults of this world would stop treating our children like they were idiots, there would be far more actions like this boy did. His parents are also to be commended for getting him able to swim early in life. Good job kid!

Amy Hatch wrote...".An elderly Minnesota Holocaust survivor..." I thought, "When did Minnesota have a Holocaust?" I know picky, picky, but when you're a writer, you should know what you're writing about.
