Toddler Falls From Third-Floor Window And Lives

A freak accident had a happy ending in Waterbury, Conn., on Sunday.

Three-year-old Letzy Vazquez opened a window in her family's third-floor apartment and fell "at least 30 feet to the ground" on to a pile of brush, according to the Waterbury Republican-American. That probably saved her life. Letzy then got up and started walking back up the stairs. She suffered minor injuries, according to the paper.

Roy Hanlon, the caretaker for the small apartment building, told the paper that the girl had opened the window in the past. Letzy's father said that there are usually screens in the windows, but they had been removed for the winter and he had forgotten to put them back in.

Some states have laws that require window guards to be installed in homes with young children. A Web page for New York State points out that, "Screens are only for keeping bugs out. They will not protect your children."

Good advice. Even if the law in Connecticut does not stipulate that window guards need to be installed, maybe parents, or the landlord, should install them anyway. That way an accident like this one will never happen again -- screens or no screens.

The paper reports that "no charges would be filed against [Letzy's] mother because she was home when the accident happened," according to local law enforcement. Do you agree?
