Life turns on a dime, Goodrich realizes, but this crosses the border into surreal. "I've spent the past few months getting used to the fact that this is reality now," he said.
He certainly never expected to become famous. Yet his story has been written up in everything from his hometown newspaper, The Mining Journal, to the June 15 edition of People magazine. Reporters keep calling him for quotes. At least six television producers have approached him about starring in a reality show.
"It would be a really boring show," Goodrich said.
Besides, he said, there's no way he would be put his infant son, 2-year-old daughter, and 11-year-old stepdaughter through that media meat grinder. "It doesn't care who you are," Goodrich said in an interview with ParentDish. "You're just a commodity."
The idea of two dozen women taking turns breast-feeding a widower's baby is apparently a sensation.
But Goodrich said it all began in a blur. He and his wife were professors at Northern Michigan University. He taught history, and she taught modern languages and literature. Susan Goodrich died Jan. 11 from an amniotic fluid embolism after giving birth to their son, Charles Moses Martin Goodrich (called simply Moses).
No words can describe how he felt, Goodrich said. "It was pure blackness."
Both Goodrich and his wife were strong advocates of breast-feeding. Laura Janowski, a family friend who was already nursing her own 4-month-old daughter, asked if he would like her to breast-feed Moses as well. Almost instinctively, Goodrich said, he answered yes.
Marquette is a college town of about 20,000 on the shore of Lake Superior in what Goodrich said is not so much rural as "rugged." The community is close. Everyone knows everyone else -- or least knows someone who knows someone. Plus, as a professor, Goodrich has a high profile.
His story spread quickly. Susan Goodrich's best friend, Nicoletta Fraire, took charge of organizing the team. Now some 25 women drop by the house to either nurse Moses personally or provide pumped breast milk. They've become a community.
"They don't just drop by for five minutes and leave," Goodrich said. "These are loving, nurturing women. They're proud of what they're doing. They're proud of the community, and they're proud of their new micro-community."
Team member Carrie Fiocchi told the Savannah Morning News in Georgia on Aug. 17 she realizes Moses isn't her baby, but the bond is inescapable. "He definitely feels like family."
"I felt like I was doing this for Susan," team member Kyra Fillmore said in the same article. "It's really emotional because, while it's nice to hold a newborn, I think to myself, 'It shouldn't be me.'"
Although the women's love for his son touches him, Goodrich said it is bittersweet for him. "Every moment of joy has sorrow in it." He still grieves the loss of his wife, but tries to put on as brave a face as possible. "The crying goes on in private," he said.
He echoes Fillmore's feelings about the breast-feeding. "It's a reminder of the loss," he said. "They're doing something that Susan would do."
Goodrich said all the publicity makes him and the women in his newfound extended family a little uneasy -- especially him. "They're the ones doing something special."

I wish I lived in a place lake that! You all humble me. Too bad the rest of this country and world is not that unselfish.

I'm sure dad is bonding with his son and giving him a bottle since according to the article the women are also pumping milk for a bottle as well as breast feeding

Sheryl said...How about baby's milk in a bottle. Breast milk? From other women? Does he know these women? Their hygiene habits, their eating/drinking habits? Drug use? Hygiene? Yes I know I said hygiene twice.... it's because I think this is one of the nasiest things I have ever heard.
They have this neat new invention, it's call FORMULA, it comes pre-mixed, or you can mix it yourself? Isn't there sometype of law that is being broken here? This is just nasty...plain and simple.... nasty.
HYGIENE.

I think it is wonderful to have 25 wetnurses to help him. I am sure that the 2 other children are loved equally as well. I say this is a wonderful plan worked out by a great group of individuals. Nothing can replace their loss of mother and wife, but the help of all of these people is absolutely wonderful. It is apparent that the baby is thriving and doing well from the photo. This is just one method of parenting that is something nobody can take away. Women who do this produce enough milk for their children as well as another's. Production is by supply and demand of the infants. I thank them for this wonderful gift given this family.

Funny, I just saw a mother deer with three fawns today in my yard. Two were without spots and one was obviously a younger fawn with spots and she was raising it. Perhaps the mother was killed. I think that other women helping to raise this child in the way the mother would have done is a fine thing for them to help out with. It is the wish of the father and I think it is perfectly fine. Nothing can every really replace the nurturing that breastfeeding provides with skin to skin human contact.

anonymous lady said...I think the reason why God gave women breasts is so they could e nourish their babies and with a natural and healthy food, not some man made processed food. The child will know the difference between a mother and father anyway and will naturally bond with a loving father without the bottle feeding. With breast feeding you don't need to give a baby water but the Dad could give the baby a little water with a bottle. I think the baby senses the "voice" and "touch" different between and man and woman anyway.

I'm sure that he will treasure them always. The whole family is blessed to live in such a community. Not all would bother.

Brenda said...This is an awesome example of a community taking part in this child's life when the mother is unable. Breatfeeding is a wonderful way to boost immunities for this child. For the women who are giving selflessly, it must be a great feeling to know that they are doing something this mother would want. To the people who think breastfeeding is gross and wrong, you all need CAT scans. Or an education

talkinturtles said...actually, i agree. i think it is great they are all doing this, but i would be afraid of spreading infections between all the moms and babies. they should pump and give the milk to the dad. what a wonderful thing they are doing for this little boy though. good for them.

Martesa said...Apparently, he is -- they pump to fill bottles with breast milk as well. They are all helping him in his time of loss. Certainly, doing all of the caregiving for 3 children, plus working, and grieving, must be very difficult. They are helping him out, giving both him and his son comfort. This is an amazingly touching story of all kind people. It's a shame you have to be critical.

Nini said...Why is this a heroic article?? Where is child protective services? I'm sure his wife would rather have her son fed from a bottle instead of being breast fed by ALLLL of these women! Where is child Protective Services!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is dangerous and I'm sure little Moses will find this quite strange when he knows of this when he is older. Dad is looking for donations and a cheap way out but this could cost the life of his son too! I agree with the other comment. This is the 21st century. This is NOT the 19th century.

Barb said...I strongly agree with you. These generous moms could pump at their convenience and Dad could bottle feed Moses. I think seeing so many different woman would be confusing even for an infant.
