Elton John Barred From Fatherhood, Katherine Heigl Adopts Baby

The 62-year-old star said that he and his longtime partner, David Furnish, 46, want to start formal procedures to adopt a 10-month-old Ukrainian infant named Lev.
But Ukrainian Family, Youth and Sports Minister Yuri Pavlenko told The Times of London that the laws of his country only allow adoptions by married couples. Homosexual unions don't count, he said. Plus, he added, John is too old under Ukrainian law to be an adoptive parent.
So is Furnish, for that matter. The law requires adoptive parents to be no older than 45 to adopt an infant.
John expressed his own misgivings about being a father for the first time at his age. "David always wanted to adopt a child and I always said no because I am 62, and I think because of the traveling I do and the life I have, maybe it wouldn't be fair to the child," John told the Associated Press.
Then the couple met Lev, who is infected with HIV, during a visit to a Ukrainian orphanage.
"He has stolen my heart," the singer said.
While Sir Elton's dreams of fatherhood have been stymied -- for now -- actress Katherine Hiegl has adopted a girl from South Korea.
Heigl announced the adoption of the 10-month-old baby on a segment of Ellen DeGeneres' daytime talk show last week. The baby is named Naleigh (after her mother Nancy and sister Leigh). Heigl's sister Meg was also adopted from Korea.
Naleigh was born one day before Heigl's birthday in November. The actress said she took that as a sign. "I realized just recently that I basically forfeited my birthday for the rest of my life," she told DeGeneres.

I think that Sir Elton John and his partner should be able to adopt a child even if they are gay , some parents are alot better then non-gays I think that they should reconcider him to be a parent.. Sir Elton John can give a child a good home and alot of love to. so rethink about it.

what a shame on the ukraine government. elton wants to help that poor baby that has HIV to have a life of luxury and the stupid government is denying it.

First off I don't agree with people being gay but I'm not going to tell people how to live their lives that is up to them. Children should be raised in a home where the parents are married and male and female. I am old fashioned and I know things are not always like that but that is my opinion. I personally don't think any gay person should be allowed to adopted any children. The issues and complications that are faced with such a subject is hard to handle growing up. But it does not mean that they are not good people or would not take good care of the child. I mean come on elton adopting a baby from way over there is dumb. Just adopt an american child. There are many children over here that need homes. And i agree with what someone said earlier other country are well still stuck back in the middle ages. You can't make the people change there culture so stick with american culture and just adopt from here. That would be my advice. I don't understand why elton waited until his whole life is almost over to adopt a child? I think he should have adopted a child sooner so he could have enjoyed the child more. People sent and spent there whole lives trying to do things and they want to want until the last minute to do something to really make it mean something. Elton hasn't always been the way he was. He has spent time in the dark places and coming back up to where he is now. It's a shame to see people with all that money twitter their money and life a way and wait to this late in life to want to do something that has purpose and meaning. I'm glad he wants to do something good and I know it's never to late to change but it's something I may never understand. He should be enjoying his grandchildren now or watching his child graduate from high school or go to college. I couldn't wait until I was 62 to try and have a child and then make if have meaning I would have to do it before my life passed me completely by. I just hope elton knows what he is doing and that he makes good decisions. It's alot of things he needs to ask himself before he even thinks about getting a child.

I don't agree with being gay but if that's your choice thenso be it. there's thousands of kids out there that I'm sure would rather have gay parent than no parents at all. Growing up in a foster home would suck. Plus Elton John can give this kid a shot at life, he has the money to give him all the newest medicine for HIV

This is a fine example of age and sexual orientation discrimination! That child would tremendously benefit from being loved, cared for and parented by Mr. John and his partner. The Ukranian government should rethink its position. We know that children with medical and developmental problems are difficult to adopt out, so this is an opportunity for these people that should not be missed.

First of all, I understand that the view of marriage for the most part is still "between and man and a woman' Perhaps, Elton and his partner should consider somewhere else- where their views are more liberal. Unfortunately, I think It may still take some time for people to come around the to concept that families are made up of- live in partners, non-marriad, co-habitating, gay adults who can still love, nuture and provide for a child!

I believe that Elton John should have been able to adopt this little boy. How many people first of all would adopt and on top of that adopt a child with HIV. That takes a lot of work. On top of being a parent, he is definitely going to be going through a lot and Elton John has a lot of godchildren so he obviously is a well liked person to take over parenting. Why can't he parent this one little boy that is going to be hard to be adopted out? I'm sure someone is going to adopt him now that this has been so publicized but there are so many children with HIV that need to be adopted!
