The Marshmallow Test: Cute or Cruel?
We all know that patience is a virtue; we also know that it's a virtue young children don't always have in large amounts. Or at all. Especially when there's candy involved. So when these kids are left alone in a room with a gigantic marshmallow and a promise that if they do not eat it, they can have another, what happens? Watch the video and see.
And then tell us -- is this the cutest thing you've ever seen, or is it just cruel?

This is just researchers way of seeing how many children can resist temptation or just jump right in. Im not saying the little red head girl, who btw is adorable, is going to jump right into everything she is faced with in life, but this is just a simple little test of TEMPTATION!! NO WHERE IN THIS RTICLE DOES IT SAY CHILDREN ARE LAB RATS....get over yourself woman! Children are going to face many obsticles in their li9ves, and if you teach them early about temptation then 9 times out of 10 they will most likely succeed, this wasn't cruel, it was brilliant. the little boy who waited ever so patiently got what he was promised int he end, the little girl who ate it before the woman left the room, didn't, like i said a billion times, its called TEMPTATION...NOT LAB RATS AND CRUELTY!

Brittany said...and also, if someone put me in a room with my favorite meal in front of me and told me i could eat it now or wait, i would wait because i can resist temptation. When i see those delicious shakes from Sonic on tv, i dont hop right up and drive the 15 or so miles across the town i live in to go get one. If you teach your children early on about temptation, then they will most likely not do things other children tempt them to do , like drugs, alcohol and sex. Again, brilliant idea these people had here, just too dang cute

Jeff said...Get a grip this was little more than a Candid Camera routine. If Alan Fundt (sp?) would have been leading the kids into the room in disguise you would have thought he was a dirty old man. Pity your kids.

Julie said...Marilyn, I respect you for having 7 children, I have 4 myself. But this was in no way a lab rat test and it was not cruel. These children were given a choice, Have you ever been shopping for example with one of the children? And there was something they wanted from the store but they didn't have enough money for this item, so you tell them next time we come shopping you will have enough money and you can buy the item you want or you can settle for something less. If they really want it and they can be patient there reward will be greater. Just making a point!.

Marilyn Ramone said...To add to my comment, in reference to the jerk who wrote about abortion, you obviously are a psycho who needs to be institutionalized. Anyone who would make such a sick comment should not even be aloud on the internet. Those are children and babies are alive from the moment of conception. It takes a man and woman to produce those little miracles that God actually allowed to be placed in the womb. That small little creation is alive and not the yolk of an egg, but a human being who deserves to live just like all of us began and deserved a chance. And to say that about little children who have already experienced life is sick sick sick!

rob said...i agree this was not crule and in the end is how a child learns . as for the abortion comment it should be ignored by all of us, seems it was made as an attention seeking tool. and if it wasent your a person with many problems , so was my father , a drunk abusive waist of a father that talked and acted just like you mr.we no longer talk ,havent in allmost four years and now hes a deing man thats allone none of his kids speak to him. and just so you know what path your going down if you have kids, my last coversation with him ended with a fight that landed him in the hospitol for two weeks so if this is your true nature, i hope the same for you mr. its taken me the better part of therty five years to undo the monster in me that people as yourself create.

Duke said...I don't think that marshmellow test was cruel. There was no disciplining or chastizing the children. There was no violence on the children. There was no abuse on the children. That will not scar them for life either. Children are precious and need protection. They were just being their natural selves and were not in harms way.

Child #1: oldest with a sense of entitlement, would have it gone before she left the room
Child #2: middle son hard worker serious, bet my life on that marshmellow still being there when she returned
Child #3: only daughter and social butterfly, not only would the marshmellow be there but she would try to negotiate to get 2 more instead of just 1 more

Jenn said...This is just delayed gratification. It is an excellent habit to learn at an early age. Most of these children understand it better than some adults. For instance, if you don't spend your whole paycheck on garbage you don't need, you will have money later for a house, vacation, kids college, etc.
