Teachers On Leave For Allegedly Making Gay Taunts

When high school student Alex Merritt said he wanted to do a report on Benjamin Franklin, his social studies teacher allegedly mocked him. She reportedly said he likes older men.
Another teacher allegedly said Merritt likes to wear women's clothes.
Merritt insists he is not gay. But his sexual orientation aside, the repeated and habitual verbal abuse he alleges touched off a wave of anger in Anoka, Minn., a town of 19,000 residents 25 miles north of Minneapolis -- and resulted in a $25,000 cash settlement for Merritt and his parents from the Anoka-Hennepin School District under orders from the Minnesota Department of Human Rights.
However, a Facebook group with 2,063 members still calls for the Anoka-Hennepin School District to fire the teachers. The Star Tribune reported that protesters stood outside a district-sponsored open house Sept. 1 and handed out literature criticizing the teachers and the district.
Almost 30 people showed up the Anoka-Hennepin School Board meeting Aug. 24 to demand that the teachers be fired, according to the Star Tribune.
Meanwhile, Anoka-Hennepin School District officials told the Star Tribune last week that the teachers are no longer in their classrooms.
They are on leave from their jobs at the Secondary Technical Education Program, officials told the newspaper. Although both teachers are on leave at the same time, STEP director of career and technical education Ginny Karbowski told the Star Tribune that privacy rules prevent her from saying whether the leaves are paid or unpaid, voluntary or involuntary.
The Star Tribune, quoting Minnesota Department of Human Rights documents, reported that one of the teachers was reassigned to work that included "reflecting on equality and diversity in the classroom." According to the paper, that teacher completed one day of the new assignment before calling in sick for the rest of the week. The Star Tribune reported it is unknown what, if any, disciplinary action was taken against the other teacher.
In a twist in the case, the Star Tribune reported that a letter to district officials submitted by six former students claimed that Merritt lied about the taunting because one of the teachers told school officials that Merritt talked about bringing a gun to school.
"That is totally a lie," Merritt's mother, Jodi Merritt to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "The whole idea of that is just crazy. If someone brought a gun to school, don't you think that would be all over the paper?"
School district officials would not confirm or deny that the teacher reported Merritt talking about bringing a gun to school.
Irate citizen Adam Fairbanks helped set up a Facebook group dedicated to getting the two teachers fired. The group now has 2,063 members. He told the Star Tribune that he's gratified the teachers are on leave.
"This is a success for us," he said. "If the teachers are on unpaid leave, we're a step closer to getting them fired. If they're on paid leave, they are still not going to be with our students in the classroom. And that's our goal."

Let the investigation find out what happened before we screw over more innocent people! So far as this report says all it is is allegations, and yet they gave him $25,000!!!???

Dan said...Honestly...I feel for the homosexual community, I support gay rights, and I honestly understand where they are coming from, however, if you go through school without a teacher at taking a couple of jabs at you for whatever reason, you probably didn't have a well rounded education. I've had teachers make fun of those who fall asleep in class, show up late, fail tests, wear certain clothes, did poorly in sports the previous game, their hair styles, their essays, and many other attributes. Now most will say that these aren't the same issues as say religion, sexual orientation, or gender, but they easilly could be just based off of other circumstances. It is a job of a teacher to teach, but it is also the job of the teacher to keep the attention of the students. I myself was made fun of on one occasion for having an assignment typed from a typewriter, he called me backwards and a caveman. Granted it's not to the same magnitude, but I know how to take a joke. Alex Merritt needs to have his skin toughened, and we all need to stop being so "litigation happy". I might also like to add, there were some who said Merritt was lying.

Jack said...The defination of normal is that which is acceptable behavior by the majority of the populace. Therefor when the "gays" outnumber the hetrosexuals at that time they will be known as normal. Until then they will be known as abnormal, odd, different, queer, anything but normal.
So they should stop trying to be accepted as
normal by all the rest of the normal people.
If you take the "gay" side it's either because you are or are related to one.

Shukaku said...Wow, this really is a shame that the conversation concerning this article has digressed into a whine fest about homo/heterosexual rights. Am I the only idiot that believes that there is more to this issue than that? According to the article a teenage boy was able to make an allegation with no evidence to back up his claim but was still awarded twenty-five thousand dollars and will probably bring about the destruction of two teachers' careers. If such comments were made then by all means, fire the teachers, BUT I did not read anything in that article that sounded like evidence of this boy's claims. My shock comes from the fact that so many of you are more concerned with flinging slurs at one another concerning homosexuality (which has practically nothing to do with this article considering the young man said he was not homosexual, despite the nature of the teachers' supposed taunts) but none of you are looking at the fact that these teachers were denied a basic American right. To be considered innocent until proven guilty. It's a shame that something so important seems to mean so little.

homecareking said...Those inconsiderate excuses for teachers. They are sopposed to be the ones educating our young children. Instead they breed hatred. Saying that this student was gay was so uncalled for. If i was that young man i'd take these teachers and sue them in higher court and make them give up their licence to teach. To teach hatred is evil. The boy never stated in any form or fashion he was gay. Who is the adult and who is the student. Hard to tell since these teachers are beyond help!

How this all turned into a discussion on gay marriage and gay rights on the message board is pretty silly, but since it's already out there, I will throw in my two cents. Why should two people who care for each other NOT be allowed to enjoy the benefits of "marriage" just like everyone else ? This is such a ridiculous debate. This is the year 2009, and there are still dummies walking around demonizing people because they happen to love someone of the same sex. So what !! Some people need to grow up and mind their own goddamned business. If you don't agree with homosexuality, that's your choice, but it doesn't give you the right to deprive homosexuals of the same rights that you enjoy.

homecareking said...Ya know what.. i am not gay as well and don't support anything they stand for now or ever. However this isn't about who is gay. It's about pieces of shit who pretend to be teachers and pretend to set good examples for students that go about condemning a student for what? The lad never said he was gay. WTF is the teachers envolved problem? They are sending the wrong message that it is ok to pick on a student. Just be damn lucky i don't live over in that school district. If my boy was picked on by some dipshit teacher for no just cause, he best be doing some mighty good explaining to me right in my face. I dislike teachers strutting around thinking they can say and do anything they want to because they have a contract with the school district and they have a teachers union ect. Stop name calling and act like a teacher not a bully. Just remember that same student you picked on could be your boss....haha

Truly, hate has no base besides insecurity, fear, and envy. Those who wish to 'nuke a queer' - Are you insecure? Are you afraid? Are you envious? Let go of your negativity - where has it gotten you?
Too many arguments are obviously uneducated - how sad. Perhaps, it's because more and more teachers are too busy imposing their personal beliefs onto the impressionable minds of students, rather than actually teaching.
Has anyone been made aware of the fact that one can be unsupportive of homosexual rights without harbouring such hostility? It's true, just in the way a vegetarian is unsupportive of meat-eating, for example.
We can only hope that the teachers mentioned in the article (which was the catalyst to all this nonsense - remember?) have had their erroneous ways brought to light.

Stacy said...Can we get this back to the actual article? First off the young man in question said he is not gay. Adolescents have enough issues figuring out and exploring their sexuality that they do not need the people who are supposed to be their role models belittling them. If it turns out that he is homosexual think about the pain that this situation is going to cause by stunting him emotionally for the next several years. This world is changing so fast that teachers need to be there for emotional support and help there students in their personal growth.

Paul, you are so right. I am like you, I hate Gays, Negros,Catholics, Japs and Jews, And I don't stop there, I hate Mexicans, Cubans, Chinks and worst of all, I hate Eskimos. Eskimos aint nothing but a cross between a Mexican and a Catholic turned inside out. But beyond these people, I love everyone else, because I am a good Christian...I would love to meet you Paul, and we could have a HATE IN, and bring our children, so they could learn the proper things in life. And Oh by the way, I use to love Jesus until I found out the jerk was a Jew. I hate Jews too.

Re: What rights are you losing, dumbass?
The rights of the person you are calling dumbass, is the right of free speech and the right to have there own opinion and be able to express that opinon. That is the right he or she is losing, and if a person believes marriage is between a man and a woman, they are called homophobes. I think that the word phobia pertains to some form of an illness, which means that homosexuals feel that anyone who does not agree with homosexual marriage is sick.
********************************************************
LMAO...ahhh, Douglas, you gave me a good laugh. Please go back to school, so you can learn that PHOBIA is a fear of something, NOT an illness. Which makes your whole post null. People like you are entertaining to a point, because of the pseudo-intelligence portrayal. Making ignorant comments and trying to pass them off as fact. It's back to the drawing board for you...

Douglas said...To KweenBee: If the phobia severe bad enough it is an illness you stupid arrogant piece of garbage. Don't tell others that they should go back to school while thinking your a real bright bulb. You are either gay yourself, or one of those anything goes jerkfaces. And I'm very happy that I amused you with my translation of the word phobia, but you did understand what I was saying, didn't you scum. You probably were one of those pushy know it alls who was constantly getting your ass kicked. Stick to the topic and stop trying act like you know your ass from your elbow, before you get smacked in your face. Which I'm sure is as ugly as sin. And if you really are as smart as you think you are, maybe you can figure out a way for us to meet face to face and believe me I will take it from there, you knower of all things. By the way, were you head of the class...?
Or simply head job of your class? I'll bet it was the latter...
And by the way, I would be the first person to defend anyone who was being picked on and bullied, even a stranger, whether they were gay, straight, black, white, or whatever. I just don't like someone who tries to insult me when they are not standing in front of me. And yeah, you may have more schooling than I do, but I am not as ignorant as you are, you arrogant fool.

We are all in this together to make this world a better place either Mr. Paul likes it or not. Wake up Paul! There's a 100% chance that your kids will know or know of a gay person in their life. Either it be a teacher, doctor, co-worker, dentist or even more common, a relative and/or a friend who's gay. You even probably have a gay relative or friend you don't know of existing at this moment in your life.
