Innocent Bath-Time Photos Get Kids Taken Away From Parents
Filed under: In The News, Weird But True, Family Time
Today's moment-of-pause has been brought to you by Wal-Mart and the city of Peoria, Az. Apparently, some photo-clerk vigilante, diligently on the lookout for child pornography, saw photos of kids during bath time and decided to call the cops, according to a story on Good Morning America.
Next thing the parents of these kids knew, the children were removed from their home. For an entire month. Mom got suspended from her job for a year and both -- Anthony and Lisa Demaree -- were added to a list of sex offenders. The judge in the case said the pix were harmless.
"I don't understand it at all," Anthony Demaree told GMA, with his wife by his side. "Ninety, 95 percent of the families out there in America have these exact same photos."
Now they've got another shot to take. This time it's directed at Wal-Mart and their hometown.
Do you think the clerk and the police did the right thing?

Maybe any one allowed to make decisions about removing children should have their children taken away and be labeled an unfit parent first so they know how it feels. Children's service employees need to have their children removed from them until the children they take are returned.

pat said...they over reacted however if the family had a digatal camra this would have been prevented then again if they did they probly would have posted this photos on the internet. I think in this day and age we should be more careful of the kind of photos we take but that doesn't mean they should have been put on an offenders list or got suspended I would appel and sue the school as well!!!

There are children out there who die everyday because they are physically abused and the lazy social workers do nothing about it.These Parents take pics of their children and the kids are removed from the home, the parents are now sex offenders and their lives will be hell for a very long time. After the medical examiner saw there were no signs of abuse, they should have been sent home and the case dropped. U just don't understand. They made a huge deal over a few innocent pics but they let other children go home with the people who abuse them after the medical examiner confirms the abuse! People are stupid! IDK....maybe people don't care about the bigger problems anymore. The Walmart worker probly just wanted attention. Thought he/she was doing something cool. It ruined a family! I'd sue Walmart too!

The Wal-Mart employee did what was right for the welfare of the children, so did the authorities, what if something was inappropriate and they hadn't removed the children. It would have opened the door for more abuse.

It's law enforcement that "blows my mind." I worked in law enforcement for 11 years; we never took children away for cute pictures! Not only were the officers misguided, but their superiors, the District Attorney who authorized the case, and Child Protective Services. I can only hope I'm missing something and that all of those agencies aren't not really that stupid!

They have deep pockets. Go after the people who took her job, get your job back and hurt them so bad that they can't and won't ever cause you a problem again. You pay the police to protect you and they didn't. Get them to. You can put your kids thru college and give them good lives at the others expense. That would serve them right. Make them pay for your kids good times because of their ignorance. Make sure that their names are removed from the pedifile list. A public appoligy on tv and in All the papers that condemned them. Everyone that didn't believe them and caused them any pain, discomfort, and added to the kids being removed should pay. For the trama that they cause the parents and especially the KIDS. (who don't understand what was happening to them and why they can't be with their Mommy and Daddy) They need to pay one way or another. Oh hell, make them pay both, any and ALL ways. Why did it take so long to return the kids? I wouldn't trust my kids to those "so-called child protectors". There are plenty of stories on the new about child workers abusing kids in their care. Some pedifiles that even work for those places. A little tearful "I'm sorry about this" doesn't cut it.
The TRUST that this family had in their film processor, their Walmart store, (that they have spent many dollars at) , their police dept. that they put trust in and have taught and would have taught the other children, to trust and respect, is all been shattered. Harm has been done here that will last a life time, and quite possibly the life of the oldest child as well. Lifes were recked and ruined because of some ignorant clerk that has NO life or common sense. A small person with small thoughts in a small world, seeking attention. Well they got it. and I truely hope that they GET ALL THAT IS COMMING TO THEM. Maybe next time they will THINK before they do something else as STUPID as this and mess up an innocent family life.

All you have to do is type into your Google search bar, Kelsey Briggs ... and this is a terrible story of abuse where a child actually dies at the hands of abusive parents because the authorities failed to do their job and in this case... they step in and do something as stupid as this... Un-freakin-real..

MaddMama said...There are strict laws for photographers concerning what they must report, so I feel the developer was not the real culprit here, but for the CPS to actually take the children out of the home, and for the parents to be charged with ANY crime is beyond ridiculous and is a true injustice. As a teacher, we have students who are abused, raped, molested, and beaten, and CPS is rarely useful. This should ANGER people and have the whole country questioning what CPS is doing, and why they allowed so much control with very little common sense!!

It is just something about it that is so cute and just milestones that you want to capture. Those pics that were shown showed no skin. I think not only should walmart be responsible but I think the attendant should be held responsible. I guess she has no kids. I think the police should have used better judgement and the city and state should pay for those girls therapy visits. They will be needing it.

Despicable as the people are who do such things the good minded people going after them did what usually gets done in such situations. Pass laws that leave no room for common sense by ordinary people. Under current law the Wal-Mart employee had to report what was seen or risk going to jail. The police had to follow up or risk getting sued and or fired. It had to go to a judges level. The judge can't be sued no matter the result of his or her decision. So blame the people that wrote the law, not the people that followed it.

We seem to be having more and more cases of just such incidents. As difficult as it was for this couple, it would have been much worse if the clerk did not question them. He did what the law requires: reported possible abuse. It is then up to other professionals and authorities to decide if it is or it isn't. As they say: Don't shoot the messenger. Maybe it is the number of these cases and deaths that the authorities have witnessed, which make them extra thorough. If it was your child out there, you would want a clerk to take note. You would pray that they would. Just remember the girl recently missing for 18 years. If only someone had been more thorough in their investigations at the perpetrators house, her misery could have ended years earlier. But no one reported their suspicions. I think the clerk did his job and followed the law.
