Rivals Give Last Touchdown to Player With Down Syndrome

The Maryville Spoofhounds could have shut out the St. Joseph Benton Cardinals 46-0 at last week's game.
They let the other team score a touchdown.

They did nothing to stop freshman running back Matt Ziesel from running more than 60 yards to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard. Cardinals Coach Dan McCamey asked the Spoofhounds for their cooperation because Ziesel, 15, has Down syndrome and spent the entire season on the bench -- begging the coach to let him get some action on the field.
Hats off to both teams for showing classy levels of sportsmanship and compassion. The rival high schools are about 42 miles apart. Both are north of Kansas City near the Missouri/Kansas border.
The Cardinals still lost the game but won a lot more.

Bravens76 said...I think this was wrong to all the people who played the game who scored a touchdown legitimately. I remember how hard it was when I was that age to score a touchdown.
I don't know, something about that it slights those who have had to have the skill against competition, that, of course, was trying.
...Of course, I was born in the part of the US that is considered football country.

Jeff said...Bravens,
The fact that you were born in "football country" doesn't mean you can't show compassion does it?
And before you speak for the others in that game whom you believed were slighted for the touchdowns THEY scored, you might take a poll of those folks. My guess is that unless they're heartless, they're feeling pretty good about what their coach had them do.....And I think they learned a powerful lesson in humanity.

These football players and coaches and the parents and fans of these teams stood and cheered for thie special Young Man. Maybe someday someone will show a little compassion for You just like Jesus did when he died for You just like he did for Us. Regardless of why they did it they will be rewarded Greatly for what they did. If You haven't been blessed lately then why don't You try a little compassion.

glenn said...This is what it is all about. I am a basketball coach, and 15years ago and mother brought her soon to the gym and told me about her soon who had a tremendous passion for the game but was never given the chance to play on an team. I asked her why and said that he was challenged. I told her to bring him to our next practice. She did and our young guys all 12 and 13 voted him on the team. Now his name was John and he was very large for his age. John would get the ball and run down the without bouncing it. It was quite amusing. The guys would laugh, not at him but if you saw it, it was funny. I loved John. So what i would do, before each game i would call the referees and the opposing coach to the center of the floor. then i would call John. I told them that john was going to play and if they chose to call travelling on him that it was going to be very long game, because he was going to get equal minutes as the rest of the guys. No coach or referee every opposed that. John now is a very productive citizen and wears his jersey every where that he goes.

Truth supporter said...I understand what the Truth is saying and a lot of you are misinterpreting it. They didnt have to just let him score, and just because he has down syndrome, you dont know the degree and you dont know if he is capable of understanding what happened, it may be upsetting for him. how did you know the other teams crowd is cheering for it also? honestly all the kid wanted to do was play, he could have let him play multiple plays and letting the other coach know to go easy on him for his situation, no need to let em score

Seriously Dude? said...If this kid is in high school he is clearly high functioning. Therefore he is likely capable of understanding the difference between having been able to play and being given a TD out of some misguided pity. Now that it's been publicized he's going to see that he didn't accomplish anything. Now if he'd been given a chance to PLAY, really PLAY, not just be handed a gift, he would have had a true sense of accomplishment.
Just because this kid has Downs doesn't mean he didn't have a right to be treated like anyone else on the team. The coach should have asked the other team not to pummel this particular player and block him without force, but then he could have had a sense of true teamsmanship - without the falsity. This is just pathetic and I'm sad for the kid who wanted to play and really wasn't given any chance to do so.

THINK for a minute. said...Seriously: Your very first sentence, "If this kid is in high school he is clearly high functioning," displays your ignorance. Go visit your local high school one of these days. Watch for the kids who go home on the "short bus" and tell me if they are all "high functioning." If we cannot be generous and kind to those less fortunate due to the hand life dealt them, not due to natural consequences of their choices, then aren't we all in trouble!
