Rivals Give Last Touchdown to Player With Down Syndrome
Categories: Medical Conditions, In The News, Amazing Kids
The Maryville Spoofhounds could have shut out the St. Joseph Benton Cardinals 46-0 at last week's game.
They let the other team score a touchdown.

They did nothing to stop freshman running back Matt Ziesel from running more than 60 yards to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard. Cardinals Coach Dan McCamey asked the Spoofhounds for their cooperation because Ziesel, 15, has Down syndrome and spent the entire season on the bench -- begging the coach to let him get some action on the field.
Hats off to both teams for showing classy levels of sportsmanship and compassion. The rival high schools are about 42 miles apart. Both are north of Kansas City near the Missouri/Kansas border.
The Cardinals still lost the game but won a lot more.

this was a great story. Hats off to the Spoofhounds for showing compassion and a true sense of spirit. that boy will remember that moment for the rest of his life, scoring the only touchdown of the game. What a great school and group of team players. You all did something wonderful, congratulations. In the world of karma, what you give comes back to you tenfold. At some point, when something wonderful happens in your life, you also will remember this moment and know you have recieved your reward for showing the compassion that you all did. God bless you all!!

B.S. This is right up there with giving kindergartners trophys for graduation. Talk about over rewarding this is not the natural way of life

Nice story on the surface, but seriously, what's this world coming to? If a kid is completely competent but doesn't ever score a touchdown, he's simply not a good player, but if you have Down's Syndrome..well, now, THAT'S a different story! Let's confer w/ the other coach and let him score a touchdown!! If that's the case, let's just allow all of the benchplayers who will never play organized sports after elementary school score touchdowns at the end of a blowout.

I'd gigged him on the 1 yard line, spiked the ball and danced a jig around him! YEEEE HAWWW

it may sound like a great thing to do but the kid has Down's syndrome, he's not stupid. it may have been a great feeling for a moment in time but the kid knows it was a farce. they say it's the thought that counts but i'm not sure how great a thing it really is in the long run. he knows deep inside its not a real accomplishment but only a gift.

Ken, your a heartless SOB that thinks the natural way is the selfish way, how is this over rewarding? We're here on earth to prove ourselves and what these teams did was put someone else above themselves for a few minutes. I applaude both teams for showing that there is nothing wrong with a little compassion and understanding. I feel sorry for you for going through this life with such negativity and have only this to say to you. Go out and perform an act of random kindness and then tell me you didn't feel something special.

This is great, stories like this makes you chills up and down your back. The teams had a great momnet. this is the kind of news you like to hear about. I know none of the players on either team. I would like to thank both coaches, and all the boys, on both teams. This is great news, love to see more like this.

Hey "Ken" -- here's a "Natural life" situation -- a guy like me puts my fist down your throat for being such a jagoff!!! It's scum like you that ruin all good actions -- well, you really don't ruin it, you just let all around you see what a SCROTE you are. Sorry I don't know you personally -- I know your dentist would be VERY HAPPY.
klevy 9-22-2009 @ 11:01AM
That is what real sportsmanship is all about. Congrats, to the coaches and the players. They made a special boy very happy.

This is the REAL spirit of America. The grace of the Lord put into everyday life. Let the humanists take the ten commandments, the cross, the star of David, and all the rest from our environment- but they can't take it from our hearts. God Bless these young men for their selfless actions for they are true winners! God Bless America.

My oldest son played football for Taconic High School in Pittsfield, MA from 2000 to 2004. One of the members of the football team was a little person (a dwarf) who attended every practice and every game for his entire high school years. The only position he was allowed to play was safety. He was also highly involved in the theater as well as many other organizations within the school. In his senior year, during the last home game, Taconic was winning the game by at least 20 points. The opposing team's coach approached Taconic's coach during the 4th period and suggested that if his team was still behind during the last play of the game, they they would be honored if this young man would be put in as a wide receiver. Our coaching staff was humbled by this request. This young man was put in as a wide receiver, the ball was thrown to him, and he ran 25+ yards to score a touchdown while both football teams and the entire crowd gave him a standing ovation. Coaches, players, parents, and spectators were all deeply touched. There was not a dry eye on the field or in the stands. I will never forget the wonderful feeling of that most generous offer that even as I write this comment, tears of pride and compassion flow down my face. Even 5 years later, this gracious gift is spoken about in our town.

Outstanding, in this day and age when parents are assaulting each other and sometimes other children because of sports activities, two great coaches got together and decided what was truely important.
