American Girl's Newest Doll is Homeless

Meet Gwen Thompson, American Girl's newest addition to its doll family. Credit: American Girl
The Wisconsin-based company, whose Web site declares that it celebrates girls and all they can be, is well-known for its tasteful, well-researched dolls reflecting certain periods in American history. Now, Gwen Thompson joins the company's line.
Gwen's story is told through another doll's biography, which, according to The New York Post, is decidedly modern: Her father ran out on the family and her mother lost her job. By winter, the fatherless family is living in their car. The doll sells for $95 and is available online or at American Girl retail locations.
We took a pause when we heard about a homeless doll. What do you think?

How about it, "American Girl"? Whose pocket is that $95 ending up in? Real homeless girls or fat, rich white folks?

I have no doubt many of those same people will think nothing about plunking down $70.00 for a video game that glamorizes violence and anti-social behavior. My daughter LOVED her American Girl dolls growing up and they really did teach her a lot about the way other girls lived. She's 13 now and while she doesn't play with them anymore, she can't bear the thought of giving any of them up since they were such a part of her childhood. She wants to keep them for her own children.

I think it's wrong to try and glorify an unfortunate circumstance like this. The manufacturer should be donating the proceeds to help reduce homelessness. But, that's just my opinion, and we all know what opinions are like.

fech.yen said...do you know how much those american dolls cost? they should lower the price so that a girl that is actually homeless can afford to have a doll that shares her lifestyle. How interesting Rich little girls that can actually afford the dolls can feel special about having a homeless doll. Sick!
Ps. The clothing should not look like lily pulitzer on the doll. this is very offensive and her hair, should not be so put together.

I'm sure you could help at the least three people with the $95 you could've spent on the doll.

The doll is fine but the storyline??? I think it's up to the child that get's the doll what to make of her life, not adults. These people need to get a life!

Donna said...I have already purchased this doll for my daughter for Christmas. It is on her list. What I think is great is that she does not even realize that Gwen is supposed to be homeless. Through Gwen's story, my daughter and I will be able to talk about the realities of life, including people who lose their jobs, have to use government assistance, etc. Lessons can be learned through this, and I believe the love she has for the doll will transfer to an understanding of a very important life lesson.

This doll is accurate of that of a parent though homeless is still in care of her child and her hygene! Not all homeless people look like the ones on tv all dirty and smell. Some actually care about them selves and work hard at not being homeless anymore. And yes I would buy the doll for my child. I see nothing wrong with teaching my children about all things in life. and homelessness right now is bad. and because i was there I feel for the ones that work really hard and dont get any help for workign hard. I never had anything handed to me. In homeless shelters I watched many people do nothing not work and churches get them an apartment while they sit back and smoke crack or do heroine. Its very sad so people dont get the help they need. We all need tolerance.

Matt said...Anyone not liking this doll is probably Republican and much like turning a blind eye to global warming, etc. etc., would rather not be shown life as it is today after the last regime. I applaud the doll's creation as it pushes reality under people's noses. This is a sad truth in today's society - as for the cost, I'd sure hope a portion of that money goes towards helping those in tent cities and those homeless - this doll can open up such dialogue with your kids and aid in teaching an appreciation for what one has now and that helping your neighbor is part of being a good person. I mean really one can conclude to NOT buy this would mean one isn't very Christian because doesn't the Bible say something about doing unto others as you would have them do unto you and loving they neighbor - so not to buy it makes you, well, not a very good Christian, pretty un-American actually. LOL ; - )

Dawn said...Who the fk said this doll was a teaching tool or a political message?? It's one girl's story in a long line of other girl's stories that contribute to the American Girl series.
I don't see anyone trying to turn Oscar the grouch a political statement. Well, maybe not until AOL writes a story about it...
A doll is a doll, people.
