Kansas Schools Ban Hooded Sweatshirts
Filed under: In The News, Weird But True, Gadgets, Fashion
The new rule at two schools in Kansas is "no hoodies."
Cellphones are banned in the Renwick School district. The ban appears not to be enough, however, so two schools in the area decided to bar students from wearing hooded sweatshirts. Why? Because kids can hide their cellphones in the front pockets, secretly texting their buds without even looking at the keyboard.
Here is a video report from Eyewitness News 12 in Kansas:
One student interviewed in the KWCH report said that she and her friends "could memorize our keyboards, because most of us have full keyboards." Leaving the phone on vibrate and keeping it hidden in the front pouch of a hoodie allowed them to communicate in secret. Pretty neat trick.
The two schools that have banned the offending outer garment are Andale Elementary and St. Mark's Charter School. Colwich Elementary allows sweatshirts with front pockets as long as they are sewn up.
If you think this sounds wacky, you're not alone. One parent told KWCH, "I think it's kind of stupid, but you've got to keep the distractions out of school." She has a first grader who does not own a cellphone, but he can't wear a hoodie, either.
Interestingly, this isn't a new idea. Lincoln Middle School in Meriden, Conn., banned hoodies back in 2007, but for a different reason. The school thought that kids would wear the hoods to hide headphones and listen to their tunes in class.
Maybe everyone should just listen to Kayleigh Clement, a sixth grader who told KWCH, "Kids shouldn't be that stupid to text during school."
Out of the mouths of babes...
What do you think? Are the Kansas schools over-reacting?

I think at the beginning of class all students should put the cell phones in a basket and get them at the end of each class. If they get caught with it it should be taken away until the end of the day and then returned.

Hooded sweatshirts are a fashion staple in any highschool's sea of students. Schools sell hoodies all the time. I text in school, ill admit it but im smart enough to know when not to. Kids aren't going to stop just because their school is dumb enough to ban hoodies.

Kev said..."Hoodies" have for many years been the most popular outer wear top of punks, hoods, homies, and all the other sociopathic little scumbags and criminals all across America!! Why? It's simple , the
sleazeballs use them as "Masks" so that they can remain anonymous as they go about their normal days committing crimes and being miscreants in general. BRAVO...BRAVO to any school who puts civility and decorum first , and abetting criminals second by banning these "Hoodies".

Yes, but the kids are that stupid, meaning they have not been taught better yet. If my kids are too young to understand not to stick their tongue in a wall outlet then I plug the wall outlet. If kids don't know not to text while they are wearing their hoodies in class then you have to do something.
Also the thing I see is that kids wear hoodies so that people who don't know them can not identify them. They all look alike when they wear a loose fitting hoodie with the hood over their head. Even if they personalized their hoodies it would be a problem because they can switch hoodies among themselves and hide thier identy.

Sue said...I do see that hoodies are a "gang thing" but the kids do not always wear them for this reason, they help keep head warm when they don't want to wear a coat as this is not "in". Also, regarding the cell phones, make them lock them in their lockers and if they are found in class using them they get punished, not by missing school, but staying after school or missing our on a school activity. I do believe the phones do make the kids not pay attention in school and some at age 10 years old have a phone already, some for not just texting, but also to keep in touch with family, Mom and other people .

Likewise, you can lead a student to school, but you can't make them learn. So, just maybe we now have a group now that can't even read this.

Angiebaby said...Banning hoodies will not solve the problem. It will simply make the students come up with clever ideas to get away with it... which is basically what kids do. Let them wear hoodies. If students aren't paying attention in class, let the parents worry about it. When Junior comes home with lower grades, or goes to school everyday but has no idea what is going on in class, don't automatically assume the problem is the teacher, or the class size, or blah, blah, blah.
Your kid is not allowed to use a cell phone during school hours. When is the last time you checked your kid's cell phone to see what they are doing with it during school hours? You provide this privilege to your kids, it's your job to make sure they use it wisely.

It is NOT a social get together, it is school. You are there to learn and act like ladies and gentlemen. Kids get away with way too much these days then the stupid parents wonder why the brats get into trouble and are failing school. Then the kids have no idea how to be responsible or RESPECTFUL when they attempt to get a job! They talk back to supervisors just like they did to teachers and their parents. Wake up parents, you are creating little monsters. Stop blaming the schools for your kids bad attitude, failing grades and lack of respect. You give them way too much freedom. Be the PARENT!!!! You are not their friend or buddy at that age.

It scares me to think what will be going on when my child goes to school! Oh, and by the way, enough of the postings about nude pictures here and how you lost weight and whatever else! If someone wants to see those things, they'll find it!!!
