Teacher Tells Student to Turn Yankee Shirt Inside Out

An elementary school teacher in upstate New York may have told a student to turn his Yankees shirt inside out. Credit: Oscalito, Flickr
Nathan Johns is a fourth-grade Yankee fan at Van Buren Elementary in Baldwinsville, N.Y. Nathan told Syracuse Online that when his teacher, Peter Addabbo, noticed he was wearing a New York Yankees jersey in class -- number 52 for pitcher C.C. Sabathia -- Mr. Addabbo told him to turn the shirt inside out.
The 9-year-old thought Addabbo was joking, but it quickly became clear the teacher was not. Addabbo reportedly "has Boston Red Sox paraphernalia all over the classroom," according to the report on Syracuse Online.
(What happened to the Separation Between Sports and State? Isn't that in the constitution or something?)
Nathan was then told to wear his shirt inside out for the remainder of what the boy called a "horrible" day at school.
Nathan's parents were "shocked" when their son told them what happened. They have met with the school principal, and were satisfied that she was taking the accusation seriously. No action will be taken until the Baldwinsville School District finishes investigating the incident.
"From a district perspective, we would never support something like that," Superintendent Jeanne Dangle told the local news outlet on Friday. "But we don't have all the facts yet."
Facts, schmacts. The Yankees front office heard about what happened and the team is planning to send the young fan a gift package, according to Syracuse Online. (The Yanks have a new stadium, they can afford it.)
Bad behavior is not uncommon at baseball stadiums, and Boston's Fenway Park is no exception. In this video, a Yankee fan tries to enjoy the game, but the Sox faithful don't cooperate. (Video sort of safe for work.)
Of course, New England doesn't have a monopoly on obnoxiousness. Take a look at this video of a Red Sox fan venturing into enemy territory -- the bleachers at Yankee Stadium. He does not receive a warm greeting. (Video not safe for work.)
But those are baseball stadiums, where drunken displays of fandom are all too common. Not condoned, but not a surprise.
An elementary school classroom is a place where we can, and should, expect better behavior. Especially from the teacher.

Boston01 said...At first I laughed at this article because there's no secret about the sincere, unusual and overwhelming emotional connection to your team when you are a Red Sox or Yankee fan. Anyone who's been to a live game can only say the blood runs thicker and hotter than at almost any other venue you could attend in your life. If you can't take it, don't go to the game.
"But," with the shadow of steroid use already casting gloom on this once glorified sport, to hear of a teacher, someone professionally responsible for instilling self worth and confidence, to of done such a thing? This is really a disturbing story. Just the idea alone that this 9 year old boy is following a sport, portraying his enthusiasm for his team and hopefully a love of the game vs. other "negative opportunities" he surely will be faced with, somehow is the very thing that causes him humiliation? What a really bad image of this mans character. I've been to games, but come on, picking on a kid, away from the field, in a classroom no less?
Firing him won't change the fact that he's a die hard fan, but there are limits. I was teased as a child over my first name and as an adult I still remember the torment of it. It's hard enough just to be a kid these days, much less have a teacher you are confined in a room with to cause you to be the pink elephant in that same room. I too am 100% devoted to the Red Sox and am proud of those boys as I have been for 32 years now. I can't imagine the likes of Varitek, Ortiz, Lowell, Youk, Drew.....anyone to do with that organization thinking this type of support spreads the love of the game.
Shame on you Mr. Teacher. Perhaps the Yankee's can throw in an extra team jersey for you to wear for a day.....see how you like it!

Daisy said...The teacher's behavior was unacceptable and inappropriate. I believe that, if the case turns out to be what this article has made it, he should be fired. He would be fired for pushing his religious beliefs on a student, and he should be fired for his recent actions.
That might sound extreme, but it isn't. If you do not draw the line there, then where do you draw it? At what colors to wear? Who to hang out with? Sexual preference? Religion? If school systems do not establish an early margin, then there will be no margin at all.

And a volunteer parent (I'll be the first to volunteer) can stand outside that room. As each student walks past, he or she is handed Yankee clothing - hat, shirt, jacket/sweatshirt, little face tattoo, whatever he/she desires, and as MUCH as he/she desires.
And make the teacher stand up there with HIS Red Sox shirt turned inside out, and all his RS paraphernalia turned around, so he can't see it.
See how he likes it. Bet he remembers THAT more than firing.
And the kids will learn a lesson in solidarity.

Myself said...I'm glad the teacher is passionate about sports, but he seems to have forgotten that his students might also be passionate. By stepping all over that passion he should somehow be disiplined. If for nothing more then wasting valuble education time with nonsense.

Of course the teacher is crazy. But is this the sensible society to judge him? In my understanding the teacher is just another victim of the lunacy we all share in a world of social division, discrimination of all kinds and ongoing judgement for our own neighbors and fellow man. Either one takes upon them this kind of discrimination or impose it against others, they are both victims of the same dark energy, both just the different sides of the same coin. He who is righteous shall put the first stone. Are you not tired of perpetuating war and fighting each other? Aren't you tired of blaming the lunacy we're all contributing in to others? Aren't you tired of viewing our inner issues as external threats? What is going to be the lesson for this fourth-grader? "Our society's innocence and perfect balance is disturbed by some bad teachers who should be lynched so that we can look innocent"?

This " teacher" has not place in this school or any other. Too many qualified people are looking for jobs.
He is crazy. Unfit for children. I hope the child and his family sues.
