A preschooler in a YouTube video performs an inspirational coach's speech from the movie "Miracle."
And not everyone is happy about it.
Sports fans everywhere remember the Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. That was the year the United States beat the Soviet Union in ice hockey, a feat that seemed impossible in the weeks leading up to the games.
Jim Sacco is a big hockey fan, and the 1980 miracle was a big moment in his life, according to a story on Yahoo! Sports. Sacco did what a lot of fathers do -- he shared that passion with his son Josh. (Josh recently turned 5; he was 4 when the video was filmed.) Sacco even brought his son "to Lake Placid to skate on the hallowed ice and sit on the bench where the late coach barked orders," Yahoo!'s Greg Wyshynski wrote on his Puck Daddy blog.
And of course, father and son watched the 2004 movie "Miracle" together.
About 150 times.
These repeated viewings led to young Josh performing scenes from the film. Dad decided to film Josh reciting U.S. Hockey Coach Herb Brooks' locker room speech, as performed by Kurt Russell. He posted it on YouTube to share with family members, but of course other people saw the clip and the cuteness of it all pushed it viral.

Things used to be taught by rote, and you could pull that information out of your head at the drop of a hat. At least I always could and by and large, still can! What's so wrong with this? The kid is obviously smart enough to do it, and the skill can only serve him well in the future. As for the content, what's wrong with it? Why don't we stand up and collectively scream at what young actors are spewing forth on television and in the movies? Much ado about nothing methinks.

She entertained herself by standing in front of the mirror acting out an entire movie. Now, she is 8, very intelligent, ahead of her class and curious about many aspects of life and always wanting to learn more. Just because a kid watches movies doesn't mean the parents are totally ignoring their child. The opposite was true in my daughter's family. When they weren't interacting as a family--on came the Disney movies because it made my granddaughter happy and I believe, the memorization got that brain of hers moving in high gear.

Dan said...Jesus. Get over it, haters. Are you really that offended the kid is watching movies instead of studying some dusty old novel that hasn't been relevant to daily life in 100 years? Or are you just looking for something to get a bug up your butt about? Lighten up.

For those of you who haven't seen the movie, it's a huge piece of our country's history. It also touches on events that happened in the years leading up to 1980, such as Watergate, Jimmy Carter's famous speech, and gas shortages. These are things that he will be learning about in school in a few years. Personally, if my son when to his first day of Kindergarden, and while all the other kids are talking about the latest episode of Dora the Explorer, or Yo Gabba Gabba, and my son was quoting Jimmy Carter...I'd be ok with that.

mesimmons1965 said...There are sooooo many other important issues to discuss and be concerned about! So what if this kid can recite a speech from a movie? At least, there is some father/son time going on which doesn't happen very often anymore!
C'mon.....be sensible. Just because he can recite verbatum a movie speech doesn't mean he'll work in a Burger King the rest of his life!
Give me, the kid, his father and everyone else a break!

Kenny said...Good Lord. Why has our society become such a shell for our kids? They can't grow up to think everything is Mickey Mouse all the time. How will they handle tragedy and failure/disappointment if all we do is make them believe that the world is all good and they have nothing to fear?

Parenting is different for everyone and unless someone is causing thier child physical or emotional harm, who are we to judge. I believe that this parent must have spent a great deal of good quality time with his child. Sharing your time with your children is one of the most important things you can do to foster thier emotional health. I bet if the child had recited the Gettysburg Address, people would be impressed. But I'd be curious, was the child interested in that or was he being forced. It appears to me that this dad and his child have found commom ground and are enjoying spending time with each other.

yabbi said...Historically, memorizing and receciting prose and or poetry was a big part of 'education'. This is not exactly child abuse, but I think the father has compulsive obsessive disorder and should not be allowed to inflict himself on his child in such a manner. It's not going to end with this silliness, the dad will find other ways to 'automate' his son. Get a life, dad, before your kid grows up to hate you and your insensitive bullying.
