4-Year-Old Channels Kurt Russell's 'Miracle' Speech

A preschooler in a YouTube video performs an inspirational coach's speech from the movie "Miracle."
And not everyone is happy about it.
Sports fans everywhere remember the Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. That was the year the United States beat the Soviet Union in ice hockey, a feat that seemed impossible in the weeks leading up to the games.
Jim Sacco is a big hockey fan, and the 1980 miracle was a big moment in his life, according to a story on Yahoo! Sports. Sacco did what a lot of fathers do -- he shared that passion with his son Josh. (Josh recently turned 5; he was 4 when the video was filmed.) Sacco even brought his son "to Lake Placid to skate on the hallowed ice and sit on the bench where the late coach barked orders," Yahoo!'s Greg Wyshynski wrote on his Puck Daddy blog.
And of course, father and son watched the 2004 movie "Miracle" together.
About 150 times.
These repeated viewings led to young Josh performing scenes from the film. Dad decided to film Josh reciting U.S. Hockey Coach Herb Brooks' locker room speech, as performed by Kurt Russell. He posted it on YouTube to share with family members, but of course other people saw the clip and the cuteness of it all pushed it viral.

He's just being a kid. He will probably end up being one of the more intelligent kids in his class when he gets to be school age. He's adorable and whoever has something to say about this should just shut up and go get a life.

The lyrics are not necessarily age appropriate either and they are spending a great deal of time practicing the song over and over again. I think we have a double standard here.

KUDOS to the dad for having such a passion and for passing it on to his kid. Too many parents have NO involvement with their kids. Again, KUDOS to dad.

My wife read to our children every night before bed, sometimes for an hour or more. By the time our oldest was 2 years old he could recite (from memory) 75 childrens books & 10+ poems of over 50 lines each. Everyone swore he could read but in fact he just has a marvelous memory. He could also recite every line of dialogue and sing every song from the movie "The Music Man" as well as a few other movies.
Young children have an amazing ability to learn. I mean just think, they learn their native language in just a few short years while developing motor skills and social skills at the same time. My take is that our propensity to learn is at its peak on the day we are born, from that day on it gets progressively harder to learn.

My grands sing along with noggin when wathching, and sing it when the TV's off. This is only training their minds to be able to retain what they've heard. Like school lessons.

This is a young boy who has the temerity to stand before millions and speak--I'm an adult and am sure can never do what this young child has. This is good practice for this young child for his future- he can become a great orator and / or politician, teacher, actor, whatever, don't attack his parents' attempts at making their child more brighter than yours... my opinion!

Sharon said...Glad to see the bulk of the people here think the naysayers are oh so judgmental and RIDICULOUS. But I think we've all learned in life...there are always a segment of people who have a criticism about everything. When I helped spearhead a community-funded, volunteer-built playground, we had people irately calling us and saying we should be ashamed of ourselves because we should be using our money and time to build homes in third world countries! And my point back to them was...who are you to judge the charitable choices we make and, how can you assume we are not doing that sort of charity work when we're not working on the playground? On a similar note...how can we assume this kid isn't "studying science or literature" in addition to this? It's just a bit more fun for Grandma to see him reciting this speech than some science text, so give the dad a break for posting it! And I agree with downema1160 -- this dad has helped nurture great memorization skills for future study. I'm an education-oriented person -- I have a PhD in psychology and I don't have a problem with this at all -- this kid watched 'Miracle' 150 times, while others have watched Sesame Street or read "Good-bye Moon" that many times and probably can recite portions word for word too. Children are all about repetition and memorization -- pick up any child development text and you'll realize -- it's what kids are oriented to do and is part of the natural process of brain development -- this is not a bad thing people! And while we're on the topic of memorization...how much memorization do well-intentioned parents make their kids do in the name of religion? The Lord's Prayer, Apostle's Creed, portions of the Torah? Nobody seems to have a problem with that. And this "Miracle" speech is pretty uplifting -- the message is about hard work, persistence, believing in yourself in the face of adversity -- not a bad message for the little guy to retain. I feel chagrined even giving the critics this much of my time to defend this child and father -- we should just let it go in one ear and out the other until they have their next point of outrage to move onto. And PS -- the video was great -- very entertaining. The kids' inflections and facial expressions imitating Kurt Russell -- priceless!

Just think kids are so smart if his dad played it over 150 times, the kid probably just memorized it on his own. Great Job Dad!/son either way I think it was great (screw-emm) LOL

David Williams said...Proof that one of Saint Louis' newspaper columnists is right, people do suffer from Compulsive Outrage Disorder, especially on the internet. If your kid is going to memorize a speech from a movie, at least it's an inspirational one. For all the whiners complaining that he should be studying science or literature: how many of your kids know 100% of the words to some vile rap song? How many of your kids know the dramatic dialogue in the scene of an action movie right before the hero shoots the villain in the face? There are many thinks in our world to be outraged about. This is not one of them...

You can't honestly say that this will result in him working in Burger King or any other ridiculous remark that has been made. It's just a cute video.

My son graduated high school salutatorian of his class and finished colleged in 3 years. What narrow minded critics aren't seeing here is Josh is very intelligent. Learning takes a certain skill or ability, Josh has shown he has it. Just because it isn't literature doesn't make it any less of an accomplishment. Josh's dad is going to have lots to proud of!
