4-Year-Old Channels Kurt Russell's 'Miracle' Speech
Filed under: In The News, Amazing Kids, Funny Stuff, New In Pop Culture
A preschooler in a YouTube video performs an inspirational coach's speech from the movie "Miracle."
And not everyone is happy about it.
Sports fans everywhere remember the Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. That was the year the United States beat the Soviet Union in ice hockey, a feat that seemed impossible in the weeks leading up to the games.
Jim Sacco is a big hockey fan, and the 1980 miracle was a big moment in his life, according to a story on Yahoo! Sports. Sacco did what a lot of fathers do -- he shared that passion with his son Josh. (Josh recently turned 5; he was 4 when the video was filmed.) Sacco even brought his son "to Lake Placid to skate on the hallowed ice and sit on the bench where the late coach barked orders," Yahoo!'s Greg Wyshynski wrote on his Puck Daddy blog.
And of course, father and son watched the 2004 movie "Miracle" together.
About 150 times.
These repeated viewings led to young Josh performing scenes from the film. Dad decided to film Josh reciting U.S. Hockey Coach Herb Brooks' locker room speech, as performed by Kurt Russell. He posted it on YouTube to share with family members, but of course other people saw the clip and the cuteness of it all pushed it viral.

Steve said...It all depends on whether or not the father forced this on the kid. If he had him stand in front of the TV for 150 viewings holding his eyelids open then, yes, there's a serious problem. But kids that age are famous for obsessing on something, especially something that his father is excited about. I can see this happening on it's own in which case, yes, it's cute

Bad parenting? Only if they had made the kid wear the same pants Kurt was wearing.

Good for the kid for having memorization skills, good for the Dad for showing the child an inspirational movie instead of some of the other junk out there.
My oldest has his favorite books and movies memorized. He can recite every line verbatim, and when reciting the movies can imitate the characters, it's a gift.

Karen Smith said...That was simply adorable! There is absolutely nothing wrong with what his dad did by filming him and putting it on you-tube. This could have been part of a school play or something for heavens' sake! I've raised 3 boys, now 33, 30 and 28, and believe me, this will not affect his future job or life. Folks, I learned early on when my boys were young---don't make mountains out of molehills, and focus on the majors in their lives. This will be a special moment that the family will have forever from when he was 4 years old. What a great performance!!

tara said...This just proves that no matter what you do, someone out there will criticize you for it. There is nothing that says this kid doesn't have a rounded life. As for studying science and literature....this kid is only FIVE YEARS OLD. How many five year olds read Shakespeare or play with Bunsen burners? Get real. I think it's great his dad spends time with him, sharing a passion together. It's more than a lot of kids get from their fathers these days. I think he's adorable and there's nothing wrong with this clip. Some people just want to complain about everything, and this just proves it. So I hope they take the advice of the speech and just say to all those criticizing....."SCREW 'EM!"

Mama Mia said...I really don't understand what the criticism is all about. Little kids copy and "act grown-up." How do you think great orators are developed? What is the difference in this and the speeches given by the winners of debate and oratory clubs and contests?

Kelsey said...People are really upset about this kid memorizing something from a movie? The comment from the article said that he should be studying science or reading books from the 1800's...really? He's like four or five years old he doesn't need to be studying that! He should be watching whatever movie he wants, and from the video he liked that movie, coloring and other kindergarden (sp?) age kids do. I'd rather have him watching a movie about a moment in history than watching something like Dora the Explorer or Spongebob.

Fran said...I haven't watched the clip & don't plan to, but I think that something has seriously gone awry if the majority of respondents see nothing wrong with a parent not just allowing their child, but actually encouraging them, to watch ANY movie or TV show 150 times over. How about reading a book instead, sometimes? Or going for a walk in the woods? Or doing a household chore together? Or painting a picture or singing a song or building a tower of blocks? Or having a discussion about what problem in the world you'd like to fix? I think that we are going to end up ruing the day that childhood activities became so passive.

serindipity said...Just because the kid (who is 5-years-old) saw a movie 150 times does not mean he doesn't do all of the things you mention. Go for a walk in the woods, play outside etc. The dad even said he take the kid skating and stuff. So what he watched a movie a few times it doesn't mean its all he does or that he has no life beyond this movie. In fact 150 times isn't even once a day for an entire year. How many kids watch 2-3 hours of TV a day?!?!? Please, people don't know this family or what they do witht he rest of their time and shouldn't judge based on one YOUTUBE clip.

Ron said...First of all, 150 times is not a lot. Most kids watch Spongebob more than that...once a day, 365 times a year. Second of all, the movie Miracle touches on US history and it is also a very inspirational movie. Third of all, who are you to say this boy don't go play in the woods, paint, or read books....it's funny how people like you can tell a whole person's life just by a 1 1/2 minute clip or a 2 sentence article. Fourth of all, I bet you couldn't recite this speech with Q-Cards. Fifth of all, it's great him and his dad share the same passion of hockey...it's called quality time. I could go on and on forever, but i'm going to just leave it like that. Instead of being on AOL judging parents , maybe you should go paint a picture, do a chore, read a book, or kick rocks in the woods FRAN, because you obvioulsy don't have anything else better to do.

Don said...I can remember when I was in grade school we had to memorize poetry and the Gettysburg Address. I wonder how many schools expect that of students today (and this is a pre-schooler!). Memorization is a great way to exercise the brain. Now today when a 4 year-old is able to memorize a speech, others think there is something bad or wrong about it. My goodness people, take a look at the big picture here. The bottom line is, this is a smart kid. He and his father should be proud.
By the way, I'm not a big sports fan, so this probably wouldn't be top on my list of things for my son to memorize (although the speech has merit).

armenurs said...Cute! How is this any different than a little girl watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" and singing the songs from the movie? It isn't-people just want to look for reasons to complain. If this little guy can memorize the speech, he will likely do well in school.

amb226 said...Back off!! If this man wants to watch this move 1,000 more times with his son, let him, he is spending time with his son. This is more than a lot of fathers are doing. If anyone commenting has children, then they have seen The Wiggles, Backyardagins, Dora, Cars, Monsters Inc, WallE or any other childrens movie or tv show 1,000 times. The last thing anyone in this country needs is for someone to tell us how we need to spend our time with our children.

Angel said...I thought it was great! People shouldn't be so negative and judgmental of others. This boy is SO cute and how many other 4 or 5 year olds can memorize a whole scene from a movie? I've seen children on U-Tube doing a lot worse! It's not about exploiting the child but about a fun, proud moment that they wanted to share. The father obviously spends a lot of time with his son and that's a good thing... a whole lot better then some of the dead-beat dads you hear about. They're bonding, enjoy watching the same sports and movies and spend a lot of time together... that's the important thing! So why not share it? Maybe when he's older and giving speeches in front of large audiences and/or in some big movies some of you nay-sayers will remember him... you never know! But for now, let's just think of it what it is... a fun, family video of a little boy memorizing a scene from a movie that both the boy and father enjoy and want to share.

Koz said...Yea you idiot that think watch a great movie with your son is bad for the kid, well 150 may be much. See what he learned.
Why aren't you bitching about the parent sitting at home smoking their crack while the feeding their baby, or in front of their 5 year old.
BITCH ABOUT THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
