4-Year-Old Channels Kurt Russell's 'Miracle' Speech
Filed under: In The News, Amazing Kids, Funny Stuff, New In Pop Culture
A preschooler in a YouTube video performs an inspirational coach's speech from the movie "Miracle."
And not everyone is happy about it.
Sports fans everywhere remember the Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. That was the year the United States beat the Soviet Union in ice hockey, a feat that seemed impossible in the weeks leading up to the games.
Jim Sacco is a big hockey fan, and the 1980 miracle was a big moment in his life, according to a story on Yahoo! Sports. Sacco did what a lot of fathers do -- he shared that passion with his son Josh. (Josh recently turned 5; he was 4 when the video was filmed.) Sacco even brought his son "to Lake Placid to skate on the hallowed ice and sit on the bench where the late coach barked orders," Yahoo!'s Greg Wyshynski wrote on his Puck Daddy blog.
And of course, father and son watched the 2004 movie "Miracle" together.
About 150 times.
These repeated viewings led to young Josh performing scenes from the film. Dad decided to film Josh reciting U.S. Hockey Coach Herb Brooks' locker room speech, as performed by Kurt Russell. He posted it on YouTube to share with family members, but of course other people saw the clip and the cuteness of it all pushed it viral.

Or maybe you were home alone one night and just had to do the "button down dress shirt and underwear" dance Tom Cruise does in Risky Business?
Quite honestly, I would rather my child memorize a line from a movie than watch (and memorize) half the cartoons broadcasted on television today!!
I hope his talents excell as he grows and he becomes a fine actor, like Kurt Russel.

This kid has something real he shares with his Dad. Not many kids get that these days. I applaud the son and his proud father. This has to be a smart kid to remember all of this. He will do just fine.

Steve said...we have kids singing praises, not to the usa but to a man in office.... why are we concerned about this. well pilgram, it sure puts a thorn in my side, hearing people complain about this... stop abortion, dictatorship, rape, and child abuse. or would that mean you have to leave your comfy computer chair and stop whining about this kind of stuff.

If he wants to environmentally conscious and post his flick on Youtube instead of burning CD's then good for him. Stop being so concerned with what others are doing and mind your own dang business. Seriously, get off you butt and go play with your own child.

HE TOOK THE TIME TO WATCH THE MOVIE WITH HIS SON, INTERESTED HIM IN PART OF THIS COUNTRIES HISTORY, TOOK HIM TO THE RINK TO SKATE, TAPED HIM WEARING HIS SUNDAY BEST, AND MADE SURE HE HAD CUE CARDS SO HE COULD MAKE IT THROUGH HIS SPEECH. YOU COULD TELL THE KID WAS NERVOUS, BUT HE GOT THROUGH IT WITH A GREAT PERFORMANCE. MY PARENTS TOOK ME TO WATCH THE RUSSIANS PLAY THE NHL ALL STAR LEAGUE AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, I THINK IT WAS RIGHT AROUND THIS SAME TIME, AND I WILL NEVER FORGET IT. KUDOS TO THE FATHER, I HOPE SOMEBODY SIGNS THE KID UP FOR ACTING LESSONS.

This is the ONE and only thing I despise about this country is that so many people are concerned with what other people are doing and always need to find something wrong with something that is rather innocent and entertaining.

motivational speech, and he nailed it! I love the tone of voice he
uses to mimic the movie. Honestly, kids stand up in front of their
classrooms in school to recite memorized speeches - what's so
detrimental about this?. No harm done - hopefully his dad spends as much time with him doing social, physical, and academic activities to offset all the movie watching; of course, he's only 4. Sounds like his dad is a very involved, proud papa!

It's not like he's reciting a Hitler speech, or like the kid is sat in front of a TV all day long reciting everything he sees. It's ONE movie, and it's an important event in history. And the kid is 5, it's something cute and funny that someday he'll watch with his family, perhaps his own children, and laugh about. It certainly doesn't determine that he'll grow up to work at Burger King...that is just RIDICULOUS. The dad probably just thought it was cute, and wanted to share it with others.

Being able to spend time with your family is the best gift any of us get, what the kid memorized is unimportant other than to show his capacity for learning.
Kudoes to the father for sharing his passion with his son. And thanks for sharing one of lifes special moments with us.

They recited the entire episode. I was baffled partially because it was roughly half an hour of memorization, but mostly it was because it was spongebob. At least this kid had a good monologue with emotion and the like memorized instead of the mindless garbage that is today's cartoon selection. I say good job to the father in this case because at least his son hasn't watched the spongebob movie 150 times and memorized a monologue from that.

I don't have a problem with him seeing the movie that many times, but I hope he's seen other things in between and I hope he's had a few books read to him.... Other than that, since this isn't anything so special, I don't see the problem...

Maureen said...What is up with crazy "uber" parents... I saw an infomercial for "your baby can read" what a crock of crap that is, I don't want my 2 year old to know what I'm saying when I'm spelling out words I don't want her to repeat... like tampon or something. Anyways, I think it's cute that he likes this movie so much and that he and his dad shared time watching it together. I suppose you can spend all your time stressing over your young child's futue SAT scores or you can let them be kids. I'd rather enjoy my little one and let her experience the wonder of childhood then make her read "War and Peace" and bust out the abacus.

mrmetoo said...i dont see anything wrong with this at all...i mean i remember the days when i would sit at home and watch Space Jam every day and then when my teacher showed it in 5th grade, i knew every line...or most of them anyways. if a kid likes a movie, he/she will want to watch it every time they can, over and over again. and just like school, they're going to pick up something from it. should people bash the dad...i dont think so, he's definitely not the first person to put a video of his kid on youtube...get over it...

The biggest epidemic in society today is the broken family or absent parenting, and were going to criticize them for having a little fun? Jeeze all the cool and fun stuff my kids have to miss out on cause of jack head idiots that have to decide for me weather this or that is safe or apropriat for MY children! My son is five and has done some pretty wacky stuff. I wish i had a video camera rolling when he did it too!!!!! We have the nerve to be critical of this father and son, but made Jon and Kate national celebs??? Boy are we in trouble! I didnt have to see the video to say leave them alone!!!! Lets sighn another reality show you hypocrites!!!

I knew Monty Python and the Holy Grail by heart--every line of the movie. WHY is this news? And WHY is the father "under fire" for something that is normal child behavior? OMG give me a break!
