The November issue of Teen Vogue has two models on the cover, Jourdan Dunn and Chanel Iman. Both are 19, and both are black. The article inside is mostly about the success the two young women have achieved and how it is still difficult for black models to get work in the world of fashion.
Our interest is in another aspect of Dunn's life, however -- the fact that she's pregnant.
In July of this year, Jourdan Dunn announced that she would give birth in December of 2009. Well, she sort of announced it. The way we learned about Dunn's bun in the oven was through the following headline on Vogue.com: "Expecting In Style: What The Pregnant Jourdan Should Wear This Fall."Our Teen Vogue insider told us that no one at the magazine knew of Dunn's pregnancy when the photos were taken. But once it came to light, the editorial team felt it was important to interview Dunn on the subject and include it in the November issue, which hits newsstands on Oct. 13.
In the article, Dunn said her pregnancy was "unplanned" and that she had difficulty telling her mother, as well as her agency and boyfriend (in that order).
"When I told my mom, she started crying and blaming herself. She got pregnant with me at the same age, and she said, 'I don't want you to have to go through what I did,'" Dunn told the publication.
The magazine pointed out that "It definitely won't be easy, but Jourdan is also in a unique position for someone her age. Not many nineteen-year-olds have CK Calvin Klein campaigns to fall back on."
Indeed. This past weekend, Dunn appeared on the catwalk for Jean Paul Gaultier, calling attention to her baby bump through haute couture, as reported by our sister site, StyleList.
When such life-altering situations like this one arise, we believe it's an opportunity for magazines to have a bigger dialogue. We're wondering: Was Dunn using birth control? If not, why not? Did she consider having an abortion or putting the baby up for adoption? Or keeping the pregnancy secret?
Teen Vogue made an interesting choice to put a pregnant teen model on its cover. We wonder if she'll be perceived as a role model.
What do you think? What kind of message does a pregnant teenage fashion model send to teenagers?

We can only assume by your harsh comments, that you would be one of the millions of girls running to the abortion clinic to avoid dealing with the pregnancy. Jordan is a beautiful, intelligent young woman. Accidents happen. In fact, a significant number of Americans are accidents!

apc37601 said...Unplanned, unwed, and unexpected. BUT.....She is 19 years old. We're not talking about a poor, uneducated 14 year old here. She is considered to be an adult and with that comes the freedom, choices, consequences, and responsibilities. She will have to adjust to a totally different lifestyle, but she has enough money to be fine. Hope the baby is healthy.

Ayme said...Vogue is just being sensational by throwing together teen and pregnant. Although 18 and 19 both end with teen, those ages are not really considered "teen" because you are legally no longer considered a minor.
And for the racist comments about her being black and the child having no father ... a bit ridiculous as her boyfriend is the father.. and in the celebrity world there are way more white unmarried skanks having children out of wedlock.
Britney Spear's sister (Jamie something)
Ashlee Simpson
Farrah Fawcett
Angelina Jolie *gasp*
Heidi Klum (all of Seal's children are in wedlock)
Madonna.. just to name a few in a long list
I realize stupid people are incapable of thinking but really try harder next time before you type something so stupid

melc said...first of all don't use a celebrity as a role model you moron that's what "good parenting" is for so your children don't want to have need to look in magazines or tv for people to look up too. And don't buy the magazine it's your choice

Teen Vogue uses many adult models. I think of models are only "Role Models" for girls planning to enter the business. Girls planning a modeling career are probably least likely to have an unplanned pregnancy.

I also work out to keep being healthy. LIke someone said if the doctor says we are healthy and fine then STOP BASHING US!!!!! I am so sick of hearing oh she must be anorexic or she must use crack. Seriously people? This is the stereotype of skinny people and mostly not true. While yes I will admit there are those few who use crack to get skinny or don't eat and starve themselves, there are many of us out there that are just naturally skinny. I have been thin my whole life. If you keep bashing us, then we'll just assume you are jealous of how thin and healthy we are. I hate to assume this but you leave us no other choice. People who keep trash talking thin models or just thin everyday people are no better than those who choice to get thin and stay thin the wrong way.

Christine said...Why would you want them to hide the fact that she is pregnant? First of all, she is 19, not 15 or 16. Big difference. Secondly, teen pregnancy is a fact of life, if you hide if from everyone, including young teens, then you are just sweeping an issue under the rug. Teens needs to see that yes, you can and will get pregnant from having unprotected sex and if you want to prevent it, you need to not have sex, or have protected sex. I have a daughter who is only 5, that I got pregnant with also at 19, and I do not plan on shielding this kind of stuff from her. When she gets older, I want her to see the truth. I want her to know about STD's that young people get and I want her to see REAL LIVE teens pregnant and learn about their struggles all in an effort to keep her from going down that path.

Jenny said...OK, she's 19. Legally an adult. Developmentally a teenager.
Vogue is condoning teen, unprotected, unwed sex by putting her on the cover and interviewing her about it. No this mag cover will not influence my daughter, but it could be one more argument many teen girls can use to condone why they are "doing it". Shame on you, Vogue.
