Mom Arrested After Using Teen as Human Bungee Cord

According to the Web site AL.com, Albertville Police stopped Jackie Denise Knott, 37 of Boaz, after they received a call about a minivan traveling on U.S. 431 with a large cardboard box on top of it -- and a child inside that box.
When officers stopped the woman, she gave them a simple explanation, said Sgt. Jamie Smith.
"The box was too big to go inside the van, and she would be able to hold it down if she was inside the box," Smith told AL.
When officers suggested that perhaps the arrangement wasn't safe, Knott allegedly replied that she had tethered the box to the van with a clothes hanger, according to AL. She is currently being held in the city jail, and her daughter, Haley Henderson, has been turned over to relatives.
Haley, 13, told WAAY 31 that her mom is a great parent and the two were headed for an event at a local church."I was going to a 30-hour famine at Life Point Church in Albertville" Haley said. "We were not going to eat for thirty hours, and raise money for the hungry, and we were going to sleep outside in boxes. We already had two big boxes in the car and there was no room for the other one."
Haley told the station that it was her idea to sit in the box. "My mom told me 'No.' It was a bad idea and I did it anyways," she said.
Knott added her own mea cupla, and told WAAY 31 that "it was just a bad decision."
Haley told WAAY 31 that her mom doesn't deserve to be called a bad parent. "She's an awesome mom," she said. "I mean, everyone likes her and you ask anyone in our neighborhood. She's a good mom and she would never do anything wrong."
We know that parents make mistakes, but giving in when your teenager asks for permission to be a human bungee cord stretches the limits of good judgment to the breaking point. We hope that next time, Knott will think -- wait for it -- out of the box.

John said...I will refrain (albeit a very difficult proposition) from alluding to the 'redneckedness' of this story. This just begs for references to inbreeding and chewing tobacco. However, somebody please tell me there aren't more children being subjected to this idiocy.

Kathy said...When a mother allows a minor control, and has no regard for the safety and well being of their child, they're certainly immature and irresponsible and are in need of help! Fortunately, the teen is alright and not lying dead on the road, perhaps fallen off the roof and being hit by an oncoming vehicle. Just the fall alone from the force of the moving car could've severely injured or killed this child.
Mother does need to be supervised and in counseling for parenting skills. What a classy role model. Parents aren't friends, they're to protect and care for the well being of their child, not allow the child the control over them. Common decency and sense do go along way!

Why she's even outlived the woman who climbed into the bear cage. Burglars caught in chimneys? Dumb criminals? This woman is queen. She's so stupid I really believe she didn't know she was committing a crime although ignorance is no defense. C'mon give the woman her daughter back.

jude said...I think the Judge should make the mother and daughter take a common sense class, just paying a fine is not ok some people were never taught anything. As a matter of fax all schools should teach a class on common sense in elementary, Junior High and High School. One week out of every year should have something like this and other thing parents lack to tell children. And for the parents that do well its just reinforcement, or you may have forgot something.

I remember a friend in my teens who was drunk with his buddies and got on the hood of the car while his buddy drove half way down the block, about 10 houses down. They were all drunk and the driver though it would be funny to go 55 and slam on the brakes. The "hood ornament" was sooo drunk that he survived, but spend the next 6 months in the hospital. BTW...tax payers paid the bill. Stupid people SUCK.

I'm guessing not. At best I'm guessing she barely graduated from high school, if at all. I never took Physics in high school, but I definitely know one of the laws of it. Something in motion will continue in motion unless acted upon(THE DAMN SEATBELT!!). Apparently she doesn't know any of the Laws Of Physics. What does the child know about parenting responsibilities? She's only 13. I'm guessing she doesn't have a father figure at home. I wonder if the mother has ever been reported to CYS(Children & Youth Services).
I am too appalled at this moment with this mother, that I am starting to not think straight, so I will end here.
