"Were there times I said to myself, Ooh, if somebody that A-list comes out, what could he do for the movement? Yeah, I wished that," the former 21 Jump Street star tells Life & Style.
Still, she says, "I don't blame the Travoltas for not talking about it. I would never tell someone what to say about their kid."
Along with her husband, former NFL star Rodney Peete, Holly founded the HollyRod Foundation, which raises money for families dealing with autism and similar conditions. She says it was a family decision for the Peetes to go public with Rod Jr.'s condition, and she hopes John can find solace in doing the same.
"The fact that posthumously he had to say that on the stand, I wasn't glad about it," she says. "But I was relieved he was able to have closure."

she is ridiculous, lots of celebs have come out an talked about their autistic children, especially sports stars and jenny mccarthy wrote a book about it, so don't make it sound like a disservice that travolta did not. it's their business.

he should be ashamed of himself he could have help so many people. as a parent of a child with a learning disability I am proud of my son and do everything possible to help other people thru all the pain and hard work.

Rose you are absolutely correct. What works for one family may not necessarily work for another. It is purely an individual decision for each family.

read the statement again...she said "A" Lister. Those you mention are not in that category. A Listers get more time and attention when they speak about a cause that they personally deal with. They make bigger bucks for research.

autism is so much more than a learning disorder. its more than a behaviorial disorder. it is an all encompassing life changing phenomonom. it effects every aspect of the childs life and can range from mild social awkwardness(known as aspergers syndrom) to so serious thay the child never speaks a word. people look at a mildly autistic person and most think" gee this person is really strange" or they may find the person emotionally "cold" this is the true face of autism. the causes are unknown, treatments vary, but the one truth that you will find across the board is that most autistic children want desperately to fit in, but have no idea how.

Holly’s comment was "if somebody that A-list comes out". While there are a FEW celebrities who have brought attention to their children having autism, there hasn’t been an "A" lister who has come out. It may be because there hadn't been any in the past but we know now that Jett had autism and the Travoltas were hiding that fact based on their "religious" beliefs. While it is true it is their business if they would like to go public with the information, what people like myself are outraged about is that a person of even moderate moral aptitude would see the enormous value to any specific cause an "A" lister could bring. Just simply mentioning it during any press junket, interview, etc. would have brought substantial awareness to the issue. But they didn't, in fact they denied it. Also, Jenny McCarthy is a crank whose book is full of pseudoscience and is actually harming both autism and preventable diseases due to her anti-vaccination agenda. The long term effect due to Travoltas cognitive denial and McCarthys ignorance remains to be seen but in the latter case we already see the reemergence of otherwise eliminated diseases.

Jenny McCarthy isn't an A lister my friend

As an example of an "intensive success" at St. Vincent's, President and Chief Executive Officer Barry Buxbaum offered the story of a boy who arrived there at the age of 7 with only the use of a toe. The school's staff from a range of disciplines, including physical therapy, occupational therapy and communications, worked together to make it possible for him to operate a wheelchair and communicate through a computer system, Buxbaum said.
"Until mothers stop drinking, smoking and taking drugs during pregnancy, we will continue to, unfortunately, see children born with some serious disabilities," he said. "Not to say that can't happen with parents doing everything possible."
THIS IS AN ARTICILE THAT APPEARED IN THE STAMFORD ADVOCATE. WRITTEN BY WYNN PARRY.... YOU WONDER WHY SOME KEEP QUIET.. I HAD A THREE YEAR OLD TO TAKE CARE WHILE PREGNANT AND MY YOUNGER SON IS STILL AUTISTIC AND LANGUAGE DELAYED... NO DRINKING OR DRUGS WERE PART OF MY PREGNANCY... IGNORANCE!!!

I have two sons, one is now attending college and makes the deans list every year. He is now a Jr. I have another son with a learning disability, i never drank or did any type of drugs in my life. so you dumb ass explain how i have a child with a learning disability and one who is and has always been at the top of his class. It is not always the parents fault and to blame a family in pain is unacceptable.
Katarina 10-22-2009 @ 11:32PM
That article is moronic. I am also a mom of an autistic child and I have never drank, smoked or did drugs EVER. I was also vert fit and a vegetarian. I consider my daughter my miracle gift from God. I was bewildered by the Travoltas not divulging their childs autism, but I feel that was their choice and no one elses business. I am sure they were proud regardless, just as I am.

that's right I never drink or smoke when i'm pregnant. Avoid all medications that might harm to the fetus. always follow the doctor's advice. but my son has autism. to those people who thinks about it are inhuman. i wish they can have their share of pain or more than pain that i suffer for being so ignorant.

As the mother of 2 sons with autism I feel it is none of anyone's business wether a celebrity goes public with any personal information in regards to their private life. Losing a child has got to be the most devestating pain any parent can go through. My heart aches for the Travolta family. God Bless them and keep them through this trying time in their life.

kathrin -- Him not being public about his son's autism doesn't make him ashamed or less proud of Jett. It was about giving Jett as normal a life as he could. We the public make it hard enough for them to have a normal life, can you imagine the extra steps for safety and privacy the Travolta family would have had to take if it were known Jett was Autistic?

I hurt for this family. Yes; John is a celebrity, but he and his wife have feelings too. I know how hard it is to turn around one day and have a loved one not be there.
I don't think there IS a right or wrong answer to this question. For example; my mom was a smoker, but she quit while she was pregnant with me. I still ended up with Tourette's Syndrome. So I don't think it's a matter of drugs or alcohol. 'Sides; isn't autism something genetic? I always thought it was.
Janet S in Vegas, you are absolutely right when you said that "I feel it is none of anyone's business whether a celebrity goes public with any personal information in regards to their private life." You're 100% correct in that regard, BUT...I also think that if John and his wife had spoken out about their son's autism before it was too late, hundreds of thousands of people would not only have a different idea of autism, but might know how to handle it if ever faced with it. I also think that conditions like this and Tourette's and such would be less prone to being stigmatized than they already are. Merely my opinion.

what business is it of hers?
this world would be so much more serene if people would mind their own business.
My heart went out to the Trivolta,s.
and now another moron tries to use their loss to her own cause.
So sad, so sad
Yoshi 10-23-2009 @ 11:35AM
It's his and his wife's business. Obviously he didn't feel the need to discuss it at the time.
