California Parents Protest Harvey Milk Day

According to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle, the newspaper from Milk's adopted hometown, he's just the second California citizen to be awarded such an honor. Milk served as the city's Supervisor.
Last year's movie that won Sean Penn an Academy Award for his portrayal of Milk had increased the pressure on Sacramento to get the bill passed, and gay rights groups have spent the days since Schwarzenegger brandished his pen celebrating.
Not so some parents. The bill directs celebrations and education about Milk's life be "integrated into the regular school program, and be conducted by the school or institution within the amount otherwise budgeted for educational purposes." That would include children learning about Milk's role in civil rights as well as politics.
Big push-back is coming out of the California Family Council, one of the supporters of last year's Proposition 8, which rescinded gay Californians' rights to marry. The CFC announced on its Web site last week that the governor had "abandoned parents and students to assuage special interest groups."
Speaking to the Golden Gate Xpress, the CFC's legislative coordinator, Everett Rice, even took an indirect shot at President Obama -- who awarded Milk with a posthumous Medal of Freedom earlier this year. Said Rice to the Xpress: "(Milk) could have won the Nobel Peace Prize and it still doesn't justify taking time away from students ... we shouldn't put things in our schools that forces parents to take their kids out."

I am not terribly religious; I believe in God & the devil but I also believe the BIble was written by men, not God, and after hundreds of years of translations and additions and ommissions and trying to allay fears of death and what happens to us after we die, I don't believe what is written. I can't understand how you are supposed to love everyone but there are so many stipulations to that rule written in the Bible. How can you explain that murdering someone and cursing are considered interchangeable sins? Am I supposed to believe that in God's eyes if I say G** D**** I am just as horrible a person as Ted Bundy or Hitler? That just doesn't make sense to me! I try to be good to everyone. I teach my children to respect EVERYONE regardless of their color, gender, physical or mental handicap, or who they choose to be in a loving relationship with. If, because I curse, God thinks I am not good enough to hang with him in the afterlife, so be it. That's up to him to decide anyway. So, California, good luck with your Harvey Milk Day! From NJ, I support your efforts to recognize a man who fought for the rights of a minority group. America is supposed to be the melting pot of the world and I think the pot wouldn't fill if we didn't allow the gay & lesbian people of the country to jump in with us! I'll move over & make room for them!

Homosexuality does not bring out violent behavior and nor does it hurt heterosexuals. And Jesus dying on a cross to save our sins is not a fact... In fact, to totally make you look like the piece of shit uneducated moron that you are, your "God" had no problem with slavery in the book of Leveticus now did he? You have no proof that there is a God or that Jesus even existed... I don't... I wish there was an undoubtful proof for that. But there isn't... So stop using a character from a book as justification for your ignorance and stupidity... Your comment is by far the dumbest one on here yet and I would like to thank you for giving such a fine example of what it is to be a moron that needs to do a lot of reading.

How is it that the way vast majority of gay and lesbian people totally disagree with you? It is such a relief that conservatives can no longer talk about family values as if they were the only ones who had them, another political issue thjat shouldn't be one. What I see in common with many conservative issues is moral judgement not morality, religious beliefs not their message, intolerance and exclusivity.

That is fair recognition to someone for their efforts at achieving in their work. But when you put her picture in the window as the, “Waitress of the Month for being Gay”, your are totally off the track. I don’t care what the next person’s sexual preference is as long as they keep it to their selves. But start waving it in people’s faces like some badge of courage and you get a whole different reaction, and rightfully so.

I am only 17 years old and I except every person for who they are and regarding the debate over comparing Harvey Milk to MLK I have no problem as a BLACK female comparing the two. They both helped minority groups who during those times were hated and still today some people still hate blacks and homosexuals. Why should who someone loves affect their political and ethical judgment? When Harvey Milk is talked about in school I really do not think they will be talking about who he slept with; they will talk about all the great things he did for civil rights among homosexuals and how he was determined and never gave up even when people were threatening him. This will not teach children to become homosexual or anything of the sort it will teach them to stand up for their rights no matter what and believe in themselves when no one else does.

You are gifted, no doubt of it,. but I also commend the schools you went to and their teachers for recognizing your abilities and helping you to learn how to use them. I also commend your parents. You have no idea how badly we need people like you, but you must get some sense of it when you read through these threads and see some of the posts people make. The way you see the world is already far ahead of most people much older than you, and you express it beautifully. Some of the people in your life must be saying this to you, but it's good for you to hear it from someone not in your life. I encourage you to keep on with it and to follow the direction your "purpose" takes you. You are a bright light in the dark, Emma!.

Why can't someone just do good things, live their lives and not have a day designated for them! I mean if your going to approve a Milk day, then you open the door for other approvals, unless your going to be prejudice Mr. Schwarzenegger!!!!!

Then look at golf...there are courses that still wont allow women to play...blacks, yes...asian, yes....hispanic, yes....women, no,. How is that legal?

Jessica said...It saddens me to sit here and read all these comments from people saying that they're having this lifestyle shoved down their throats and that people have a choice in sexual preferences. To anyone that is wondering, some scientists have conclusively found nerves in the brain that are different in both straight and gay people. So, to all you fanatics on here: No, people do not have a choice in what gender they prefer. To use some catholic terminology, it is pre-ordained. So guess what, if there is a God, He chose to make people the way He wanted to. So HA on your narrow minded beliefs.
No one with a brain is trying to force beliefs down peoples throats. Having diversity and difference of opinion is exactly what this country was founded on. It's what makes our world so fascinating, it's what makes our world go around. I perfectly understand that people may not like or feel comfortable around some peoples way of life and I respect that. It's okay not to like what others like. However, it's completely disrespectful of anyone for someone to come out and tell people that how they are living and what they are doing behind closed doors is wrong. If people want to be happy, so be it. It's no one else's business.
This wonderful man does not have his own day in California because he was gay. This man has his own day in California because of the difference he has made in the gay rights movement. It is in this way that he compares to Martin Luther King Jr.. For the contributions he has made to society. For standing up for what he believes in and not taking no for an answer. We all have something to learn from these two men. Martin Luther King Jr., was not just for equality for his race, it was for all of man kind. No matter race or sexual preference. If he were alive today, he'd probably be devastated by what some of you believe in. It just goes to show that our country has not progressed nearly as much as we think. I hope the children today will grow up not judging people the way their parents have raised them to.
I feel like i stepped back 100 years on this site. I believe that if some of you had your way, instead of black people being your slaves, you'd have the gay men and lesbian women doing that job. Get a life, you're just sick.

Do you think Asians and Europeans will care that California's children will have a working knowledge of some obscure gay guy who was killed by a crazy guy who used the "Twinkie" defense? OR do you think we ought to be teaching them grammar, calculus and world history? This wreaks of political agenda and is designed to separate children from their parents which is where they SHOULD be learning social lessons.

Ericka said...I am totally for having a Harvey Milk Day. Harvey Milk is like MLK. They both fought for equality for people based on the people themselves, not their skin color or sexual preference. They both used nonviolent ways to try to gain equality. If parents want to be ignorant and take their children out of school because they disagree with this lifestyle, then that is their problem. Parents need to remember, you cannot control what your child thinks, and sooner or later, your child will experience homosexuality. They will meet people who are homosexual. No matter how hard parents try to "protect" their kids from this, they are only doing their kids harm. I'm sure that back in the day, people wanted to pull their kids our of school because they did not want them learning about people who were black. Newsflash, people can't help being black the same way they can't help being homosexual. People say that being homosexual is a choice. However, the only choice you have in that matter is whether to be open about it or to stay in the closet.

Punk said...The very notion that being gay is wrong, is absolutely DUMB, your narrow minded, and i mean unbelievably narrow minded. Since I am not gay and I dont live in cali im unaware of exactly what he's done. but i would have to say he is probebly recieving one for what he's done while in office and while rising to office. A man not to long ago championed the migrant workers, his name was Ceaser. Anyone who has championed a cause or fought for something they believed in, should and most likely would feel that having a day named after you wasnt the goal, the goal was to help achieve equality. I have gay friends, i have bi friends, and straight friends...their not trying to convert others, they just wanna feel like they wont be mocked/chastised or made fun of for a preference.

Read Milk's biography you dumbasses - he said that he would take boys off the street (young boys!) and bring them home to have homosexual sex with them. He was a pedophile and pervert - he was also a corrupt politician. But because he was a faggot our kids will be forced to celebrate his life? How about talking about his real life? Drugs, Under-age sex, and corruption. The movie would make you think that he will killed because he was queer - far from the truth - it was because of his corrupt political ties that got the queer smeared.

Gary said...Just reading this story feels like a form of bullying. The details of Harvey Milks bone-chilling murder & the hypocrisy of Dan Whites Twinkie Defense is a national embarrasment. Chill out homophobes, or better yet DO pull your kids (who are gonna learn to be just as intolerant as you are) out so as to really signify the extreme nature of your isolated views. Do you realize how MANY things qualify for having their own "day" or "week" or "month"?? Oct. is already AIDS Awareness Month & Gay & Lesbian History Month (along with Caramel, Cookie & Vegetarian Awareness Month). Just establishing them does not mean that this now has to be taught/covered even discussed if a teacher doesn't want to. We're not talking FORCED CURRICULUM here. OK. I'm gonna calm down now. Oct. 25th-31st is "Peace, Friendship & Goodwill Week"

norrin96@aol.com said...A history lesson on how being gay became a choice:
Early on homosexuality was treated as a psychological illness. That means they would lock gay people up in sanitariums in an attempt to cure them. Finally the gay community stood up and said we are not sick, we choose to live this way. This statement was turned back on them. After all, if you can choose to be this way, you certainly can choose to be something else. However, for gays getting homosexuality off the list of psychological illnesses at that time took priority. Being gay is NOT truly a choice. Why would anyone choose to subject themselves to the ridicule, humilitiation, and potential violence the gay community has had to endure? Milk is being honored for his struggle for gay rights, so yes, he is comparable to MLK. Gay rights primary theory is the radical idea that homosexuals are actually people too and deserve basic human dignities and rights as most of you Americans enjoy without feeling shame. That being said, I'm not sure if being gay is anything to be prould of either. If someone asks a man what are you proud of that man may answer one of the following:
I am an award winning teacher.
I founded a highly successful business
I suck c*ck.
One of these answers doesn't fit.

He is nothing but a damn liberal who got in office by saying that he was a Republican. He needs to just switch parties and stop lying to the American people by saying he is a conservative. That immigrant has done almost as much harm to California and the rest of the country as Obama has. Both of whom are immigrants and neither of whom is qualified to be president or to make laws that affect every American. Damn the libs!
