Doctors Call Boy's Recovery From Blindness a Miracle

Gene therapy helped a 9-year-old boy recover from a disease that stole his sight away, and doctors are calling the results of his treatment "near biblical." Credit: NBC Philadelphia.
Corey Hass was born with Leber's Congenital Amaurosis and the disease ravaged the 4th-grader's sight to the point that he was left completely blind a little more than a year ago, according to NBC Philadelphia.Today, Corey can see his favorite color -- red -- and the rest of the world, too, thanks to an experimental genetic treatment administered by doctors at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Penn Medicine. Healthy genes were injected into the boy's weakest eye, and that single injection restored the missing protein in Corey's retina.
Before the treatment, it took Corey four minutes to complete an obstacle course created by his medical team. After the injection he was able to complete the course in just seconds. Dr. Catherine High, a researcher involved in Corey's treatment, called the results "almost biblical."
"I've never seen anything so amazing in the whole span of my career," High told the station. While doctors can't say whether or not the treatment is a cure, Corey's parents are stunned at the results thus far.
"He would stare at the sun and it wouldn't effect his vision," Nancy Hass, Corey's mother, told NBC. "So when he said the sun is really bright, I said 'Wow!'"
A month later, the boy was able to read ten lines of text, play with his pals and ride his bike -- all by himself. And this New Yorker, grateful for his Pennsylvania-based treatment, says he's now rooting for the Phillies in the World Series.
Corey is one of 12 patients taking part in the study, and the other participants also saw their vision improve.

Tim said...Always a wonderful feeling when you read that something happened to make a child's world a better place to live.....Children are God's creation that comes from the union of love between man and woman.......Inspiring as this story is,,,,lot more "Miracles" are needed in medicene for the cures of Cancer, Heart Disease.....not only in Children but in adults as well......I hope that Corey's treatment is the answer to his seeing a world in which he lives in.......God Bless

God Said It I Believe It That Settles It said...Jesus Christ performed many Miracles during the time he physically inhabited the Earth. And His Miracles STILL continue TODAY from up on High!
Praise the Lord for restoring this boy's sight!!!!!
Hopefully this boy and his family will see and understand, if they do n't already do understand, that God and ONLY God could restore their son's sight. And will honor Him with their Praise & Worship!!!
Once again THANK YOU Lord for restoring this boy's eyes to him that he may truly see what Your Glory is all about!!!!!!!

Why all the hostility over the fact that God is the Author of this Miracle.
Why do you imply that Believers need to get their "priorites straight?"
If you choose not to believe in God/Christ that is fine. God gives everybody a free will choice. God will never force anyone to believe that he is their Lord & Savior.
God, however will paitently wait for the day where anyone might turn to His Son to be saved and in turn have access the His forgiving of sins.

Judithyoder said...I believe God caused or allowed him to be healed. Scientist can only come up with things to help people get better because God gives them the ability to do so. Miracles are a part of who God is...a miracle worker who loves mankind and wants to do great things in their lives whether in healing or changing the heart. He's still at work!

Troy said...when certain items or elements align in a way to make something happen in nature we take it as a given. When we discover that things can be made to happen by people making those things align we call discovery. But the fact that they are capable of happening was inherent in their nature. It was discovery of gravity, discovery of the speed of light, and all the other discoveries that made future discoveries possible. Science is the search of those discoveries. We now have over 50 equations and laws that help describe the natural laws of nature that have been identified that are essential for our planet to exist and continue as it is. The total number of natural laws are unknown and not all have been discovered. Science didn't create the fact that the relationships occur, it only identifies and tries to explain the relationships in terms or equations that man can comprehend. There is no contest between God and science, only a relationship of sciences long term continuing effort to identify and communicate the many laws of nature so they can be understood and used by others. There seems to be in our population many people that think science makes these things occur, therefore God did not. After a life of studying science, with a Doctorate of Science, I am now retired, but I have a great reverence for the many facts we are still discovering that help explain our existence and the laws of nature that help us heal diseases, provide immunities, and avoid health problems, all resulting from research into the laws of nature.

jim said...I think what Troy was trying to say was that the fact that the gene therapy worked was inherent in the nature of how the genes interacted, while the doctors discovered that inserting the genetic material there would facilitate the interaction. One a law of nature that was there before science discovered how to take advantage of it.

Jeff said...To the religous people stop claiming that God is the only reason this boy has his site back. To those bashing religion find somewhere else to do it. The original point of the article is to talk about how a little boy has been able to regain something we all take for granted: sight. Whether it is the ability to see a favorite color or a mothers face it is something all to easily lost, and once lost very hard if not impossible to regain it completely. Now can we please stay ON topic for the next dozen or so posts.

Lord Doom said...Now if they could only find a cure for stupidity and religion - Then a truly marvelous world it would be indeed. I would venture to guess, the same cure would apply to both diseases.
